A Proposed Scan Strategy Used on SLM Inner Structure Part

A model with an inner structure was designed to study the relationship between the surface quality of the inner structure and the scan strategy in this study. The test results showed that the precision of the inner structure was highly affected by the scan strategy, and the specimens printed using different strategies showed different performances on the surface quality of the inner structure. The specimen printed using the square-framed scan strategy had a lower flatness value on the positive face of the inner structure compared to that of the other two specimens printed using Z-shape scan strategies, while the specimen printed using the Z-shape scan strategy (along the inner structure) had a relative optimal surface roughness on the side surface of the inner structure in all three specimens. The bending deformation caused by the scan strategies was considered to be the main factor affecting the flatness on the positive surface, while laser energy fluctuation showed a significant impact on side surface roughness. Combined with the experimental data, a new scan strategy was proposed; we found that the specimen printed using this new strategy improved positive surface flatness and side surface roughness.

Improving the Mechanical Strength of Dental Applications and Lattice Structures SLM Processed

To manufacture custom medical parts or scaffolds with reduced defects and high mechanical characteristics, new research on optimizing the selective laser melting (SLM) parameters are needed. In this work, a biocompatible powder, 316L stainless steel, is characterized to understand the particle size, distribution, shape and flowability. Examination revealed that the 316L particles are smooth, nearly spherical, their mean diameter is 39.09 μm and just 10% of them hold a diameter less than 21.18 μm. SLM parameters under consideration include laser power up to 200 W, 250-1500 mm/s scanning speed, 80 μm hatch spacing, 35 μm layer thickness and a preheated platform. The effect of these on processability is evaluated. More than 100 samples are SLM-manufactured with different process parameters. The tensile results show that is possible to raise the ultimate tensile strength up to 840 MPa, adapting the SLM parameters for a stable processability, avoiding the technological defects caused by residual stress. Correlating with other recent studies on SLM technology, the tensile strength is 20% improved. To validate the SLM parameters and conditions established, complex bioengineering applications such as dental bridges and macro-porous grafts are SLM-processed, demonstrating the potential to manufacture medical products with increased mechanical resistance made of 316L.

Three-dimensional Imaging and Scanning: Current and Future Applications for Pathology

Imaging is vital for the assessment of physiologic and phenotypic details. In the past, biomedical imaging was heavily reliant on analog, low-throughput methods, which would produce two-dimensional images. However, newer, digital, and high-throughput three-dimensional (3D) imaging methods, which rely on computer vision and computer graphics, are transforming the way biomedical professionals practice. 3D imaging has been useful in diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic decision-making for the medical and biomedical professions. Herein, we summarize current imaging methods that enable optimal 3D histopathologic reconstruction: Scanning, 3D scanning, and whole slide imaging. Briefly mentioned are emerging platforms, which combine robotics, sectioning, and imaging in their pursuit to digitize and automate the entire microscopy workflow. Finally, both current and emerging 3D imaging methods are discussed in relation to current and future applications within the context of pathology.
