Electron transfer in biological systems

Examples of how metalloproteins feature in electron transfer processes in biological systems are reviewed. Attention is focused on the electron transport chains of cellular respiration and photosynthesis, and on metalloproteins that directly couple electron transfer to a chemical reaction. Brief mention is also made of extracellular electron transport. While covering highlights of the recent and the current literature, this review is aimed primarily at introducing the senior undergraduate and the novice postgraduate student to this important aspect of bioinorganic chemistry.

Unusual Water Oxidation Mechanism via a Redox-Active Copper Polypyridyl Complex

To improve Cu-based water oxidation (WO) catalysts, a proper mechanistic understanding of these systems is required. In contrast to other metals, high-oxidation-state metal-oxo species are unlikely intermediates in Cu-catalyzed WO because π donation from the oxo ligand to the Cu center is difficult due to the high number of d electrons of CuII and CuIII. As a consequence, an alternative WO mechanism must take place instead of the typical water nucleophilic attack and the inter- or intramolecular radical-oxo coupling pathways, which were previously proposed for Ru-based catalysts. [CuII(HL)(OTf)2] [HL = Hbbpya = N,N-bis(2,2'-bipyrid-6-yl)amine)] was investigated as a WO catalyst bearing the redox-active HL ligand. The Cu catalyst was found to be active as a WO catalyst at pH 11.5, at which the deprotonated complex [CuII(L-)(H2O)]+ is the predominant species in solution. The overall WO mechanism was found to be initiated by two proton-coupled electron-transfer steps. Kinetically, a first-order dependence in the catalyst, a zeroth-order dependence in the phosphate buffer, a kinetic isotope effect of 1.0, a ΔH⧧ value of 4.49 kcal·mol-1, a ΔS⧧ value of -42.6 cal·mol-1·K-1, and a ΔG⧧ value of 17.2 kcal·mol-1 were found. A computational study supported the formation of a Cu-oxyl intermediate, [CuII(L•)(O•)(H2O)]+. From this intermediate onward, formation of the O-O bond proceeds via a single-electron transfer from an approaching hydroxide ion to the ligand. Throughout the mechanism, the CuII center is proposed to be redox-inactive.

Can you break the oxo-wall? A multiconfigurational perspective

The concept of the "oxo-wall" was conceived about 60 years ago by Harry B. Gray, and has been found to be related to the non-existence of high-valent M-oxo species in the +IV oxidation state in a tetragonal geometry beyond group 8 in the periodic table. Several efforts have been made in the past decades to test and find examples that violate this theory. Several claims of violation in the past were attributed to the difference in the geometries/coordination number and, therefore, these are not examples of true violation. In recent years, substantial efforts have been undertaken to synthesise a true Co^IVO species with various ligand architectures. Co^IVO and Co^III-O˙ are electromers and, while they are interchangeably used in the literature; the former violates the oxo-wall while the latter does not. The possibility that these two species could exist in various proportions similar to resonating structures has not been considered in detail in this area. Furthermore, there have been no attempts to quantify such mixing. In this direction, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 methods to quantify the co-existence of Co^IVO and Co^III-O˙ isomeric species. By thoroughly studying six different metal-oxo species, we affirm that the nature of such electromeric mixing is minimal/negligible for Fe^IVO and Mn^IVO species - both are pre-oxo-wall examples. By studying four different ligand architectures with Co-oxo species, our results unveil that the mixing of Co^IVO ↔ Co^III-O˙ is substantial in all geometries, with dominant Co^IVO species favourable for the S = 3/2 intermediate spin state. The percentage of the Co^III-O˙ species is enhanced substantially for the S = 1/2 low-spin state. We have attempted to develop a tool to estimate the percentage of the Co^III-O˙ species using various structural parameters. Among those tested, a linear relationship between % of Co^III-O˙ and a bond length based ratio is found (, where d_(Co-O) and d_(Co-Nax) are the axial Co-O and Co-N_ax bond lengths in Å, respectively). It is found that the higher the R_d, the greater the Co^III-O˙ character will be and the geometrically portable correlation developed offers a way to qualitatively compute the % of Co^III-O˙ character for unknown geometries.

DFT and TDDFT Study of the Reaction Pathway for Double Intramolecular C-H Activation and Functionalization by Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel-Nitridyl Complexes

Previous work was successful in synthesizing a nickel amine, [Cz^tBu(Pyr^iPr)(NH₂-Pyr^iPr)], by double C-H activation and functionalization via irradiating a disphenoidal Ni(II) azido complex, [Cz^tBu(Pyr^iPr)₂NiN₃]. The present work seeks to expand upon the earlier research and to substitute the metal with iron or cobalt. Density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-31+G(d') and APFD/Def2TZVP-was used to simulate the generation of an intermediate with significant nitridyl radical character after the loss of N₂ from the starting azido complex. DFT and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) were also used to propose a detailed pathway comprised of intermediates of low, intermediate, or high spin multiplicity and photogenerated excited states for the reaction of the azido complex, [Cz^tBu(Pyr^iPr)₂MN₃], to form the amine complex [Cz^tBu(Pyr^iPr)M(NH₂-Pyr^iPr)], M = Co, Ni, or Fe.

Iron and manganese oxo complexes, oxo wall and beyond

High-valent metal-oxo species with multiply-bonded M-O groups have been proposed as key intermediates in many biological and abiological catalytic oxidation reactions. These intermediates are implicated as active oxidants in alkane hydroxylation, olefin epoxidation and other oxidation reactions. For example, [Fe^ivO(porphyrinato^•-)]⁺ cofactors bearing π-radical porphyrinato^•- ligands oxidize organic substrates in cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are common to many life forms. Likewise, high-valent Mn-oxo species are active for H₂O oxidation in photosystem II. The chemistry of these native reactive species has inspired chemists to prepare highly oxidized transition-metal complexes as functional mimics. Although many synthetic Fe-O and Mn-O complexes now exist, the analogous oxo complexes of the late transition metals (groups 9-11) are rare. Indeed, late-transition-metal-oxo complexes of tetragonal (fourfold) symmetry should be electronically unstable, a rule commonly referred to as the 'oxo wall'. A few late metal-oxos have been prepared by targeting other symmetries or unusual spin states. These complexes have been studied using spectroscopic and theoretical methods. This Review describes mononuclear non-haem Fe-O and Mn-O species, the nature of the oxo wall and recent advances in the preparation of oxo complexes of Co, Ni and Cu beyond the oxo wall.
