Enhancement of Mechanical Properties and Bonding Properties of Flake-Zinc-Powder-Modified Epoxy Resin Composites

As a typical brittle material, epoxy resin cannot meet its application requirements in specific fields by only considering a single toughening method. In this paper, the effects of carboxyl-terminated polybutylene adipate (CTPBA) and zinc powder on the mechanical properties, adhesion properties, thermodynamic properties and medium resistance of epoxy resin were studied. A silane coupling agent (KH-550) was used to modify zinc powder. It was found that KH-550 could significantly improve the mechanical properties and bonding properties of epoxy resin, and the modification effect of flake zinc powder (f-Zn) was significantly better than that of spherical zinc powder (s-Zn). When the addition amount of f-Zn was 5 phr, the tensile shear strength and peel strength of the composites reached a maximum value of 13.16 MPa and 0.124 kN/m, respectively, which were 15.95% and 55% higher than those without filler. The tensile strength and impact strength reached a maximum value of 43.09 MPa and 7.09 kJ/m², respectively, which were 40.54% and 91.11% higher than those without filler. This study provides scientific support for the preparation of f-Zn-modified epoxy resin.

Adhesive and Impact-Peel Strength Improvement of Epoxy Resins Modified with Mono and Diamine Functionalized Elastomers

Epoxy resins are widely applied in the automotive and electronic industries. However, pure epoxy resins are brittle and thus possess poor mechanical properties. Herein, we report a facile method for improving the impact-peel and adhesive strengths of epoxy resins via the incorporation of two different types of polyether amines (monoamine-based and diamine-based prepolymers). A comparative study was performed to investigate the potential advantages of incorporating a prepolymer into an epoxy resin matrix. It was discovered that the incorporation of a diamine prepolymer significantly improved the impact-peel strength of the epoxy resin system at low (-40°C) and room (23°C) temperatures. For 15 wt% adhesive loading, the diamine prepolymer-based epoxy system demonstrated a 130% (low temperature) and 32% (room temperature) higher impact-peel strength than the monoamine prepolymer-based epoxy system. Moreover, the 15 wt% diamine prepolymer-based epoxy system exhibited a significantly improved shear strength (~36 MPa) and T-peel strength (260 N/25 mm) owing to the effectively reduced crack propagation and cohesive interactions between the epoxy molecules. Our results suggest that the modification of epoxy resins with an appropriate amount of mono and diamine-functionalized elastomers provides a novel route for the development of highly efficient adhesive materials for various applications.

Effects of high polyamic acid content and curing process on properties of epoxy resins

Epoxy/polyamic acid (EP/PAA) adhesives with high polyimide precursor-PAA content have been synthesized and then cured. The structure, thermal, and adhesive properties were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile shear test. The effects of PAA content and curing process on the tensile shear strength were also studied. The results showed that the addition of PAA improved the heat resistance and reduced the water absorption. EP/PAA adhesive kept good adhesion. A kind of EP/PAA composite adhesive with excellent comprehensive properties was prepared in this study.
