A Practical Primer: Raman Spectroscopy for Monitoring of Photopolymerization Systems

Photopolymerization systems provide compelling advantages for industrial applications due to their fast reaction kinetics, wide selection of monomers for physical property development, and energy-efficient initiation via illumination. These same advantages can present challenges when attempting to monitor these reactions or characterize their resulting polymers; however, Raman spectroscopy can provide the flexibility and resolution needed. In this overview, Raman spectroscopy is compared to common characterization techniques, such as photo-differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy, highlighting advantages of Raman spectroscopy. Examples are provided of how Raman spectroscopy has been used to monitor photopolymerizations and to provide insight on the impact of monomer chemistry and processing conditions, as well as paired with other techniques to elucidate physical properties. Finally, practical tips are provided for applying Raman spectroscopy and microscopy in photopolymerization systems.

Quantitative Studies on Local Structure of Molten Binary Potassium Germanates

In situ high temperature Raman spectra of xK₂O-(100-x)GeO₂, samples containing 0, 5, 11.11, 20, 25, 33.3, 40, and 50 %mol K₂O, were measured. The structure units and a series of model clusters have been designed, optimized, and calculated by quantum chemistry ab initio calculations. The computational simulation in conjunction with the experiments put forward a novel method to correct the experimental Raman spectra of the melts. Deconvolution of the stretching vibrational bands of nonbridging oxygen of [GeO₄] tetrahedra of Raman spectra by Gaussian functions was carried out, and the quantitative distribution of different Q_n species in molten binary potassium germanates was obtained. The result on all molten samples show that four-fold coordinated germanium atoms occupy a dominant position in the melt and only four-fold coordinated exists in the melt when the K₂O content exceeds a certain amount. For melts with high GeO₂ content, with the increasing K₂O content, the structure of [GeO₄] tetrahedra gradually changes from a three-dimensional network consisting of both six-membered and three-membered rings to a three-dimensional network that presents all three-membered rings.

Omni-functional crystal: Advanced methods to characterize the composition and homogeneity of lithium niobate melts and crystals

Lithium niobate (LN) is a type of multifunctional dielectric and ferroelectric crystal that is widely used in acoustic, optical, and optoelectronic devices. The performance of pure and doped LN strongly depends on various factors, including its composition, microstructure, defects, domain, and homogeneity. The structure and composition homogeneity can affect both the chemical and physical properties of LN crystals, including their density, Curie temperature, refractive index, and piezoelectric and mechanical properties. In terms of practical demands, both the composition and microstructure characterizations these crystals must range from the nanometer scale up to the millimeter and wafer scales. Therefore, LN crystals require different characterization technologies when verifying their quality for various device applications. Optical, electrical, and acoustic technologies have been developed, including x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and interferometry. To obtain detailed structural information, advanced sub-nanometer technologies are required. For general industrial demands, fast and non-destructive technologies are preferable. This review outlines the advanced methods used to characterize both the composition and homogeneity of LN melts and crystals from the micro- to wafer scale.
