Ethanol purification enables high-quality α-phase FAPbI3 perovskite microcrystals for commercial photovoltaic applications

Reliable quality and sustainable processes must be developed for commodities to enter the commercial stage. For next-generation photovoltaic applications such as perovskite solar cells, it is essential to manufacture high-quality photoactive perovskites via eco-friendly processes. We demonstrate that ethanol, an ideal green solvent, can be applied to yield efficient alpha-phase FAPbI3 perovskite microcrystals.

Enhanced Efficiency of Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells via Double-Sided Sandwich Evaporation Technique for Four Terminal Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Application

Halide perovskite based solar cells (PSC’s) have shown tremendous potential based on its facile fabrication technique, and the low cost of perovskite thin film formation with efficiency passing through an unmatched growth in recent years. High quality film along with morphology and crystallinity of the perovskite layer influences the efficiency and other properties of the perovskite solar cell (PSC). Furthermore, semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSC) are an area of attraction due to its application in tandem solar cells, although various factors like suitable transparent rear electrodes and optimized technique limit the power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this article, we fabricated perovskite film using a technique termed Double-sided sandwich evaporation technique (DS-SET) resulting in high quality perovskite film (MAPbI3 and MAPbIxCl3−x). Using this fabrication approach as compared to the traditional spin-coating method, we reported an enhanced photovoltaic performance of the PSC with a better surface morphology and homogeneity. The best parameter via DS-SET was found to be SET 30 min, which demonstrated a PCE (%) up to 14.8% for MAPbI3 and 16.25% for MAPbIxCl3−x, respectively. Addressing the tandem solar cell, incorporating thin Ag as a transparent electrode with a thickness of 20 nm onto the PSC’s as the top cell and further combining with the Si solar cell results in the four terminal (4T) tandem solar cell exhibiting a PCE (%) of 24.43%.

Probing the Origin of the Open Circuit Voltage in Perovskite Quantum Dot Photovoltaics

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have many properties that make them attractive for optoelectronic applications, including expanded compositional tunability and crystallographic stabilization. While they have not achieved the same photovoltaic (PV) efficiencies of top-performing perovskite thin films, they do reproducibly show high open circuit voltage (V_OC) in comparison. Further understanding of the V_OC attainable in PQDs as a function of surface passivation, contact layers, and PQD composition will further progress the field and may lend useful lessons for non-QD perovskite solar cells. Here, we use photoluminescence-based spectroscopic techniques to understand and identify the governing physics of the V_OC in CsPbI₃ PQDs. In particular, we probe the effect of the ligand exchange and contact interfaces on the V_OC and free charge carrier concentration. The free charge carrier concentration is orders of magnitude higher than in typical perovskite thin films and could be tunable through ligand chemistry. Tuning the PQD A-site cation composition via replacement of Cs⁺ with FA⁺ maintains the background carrier concentration but reduces the trap density by up to a factor of 40, reducing the V_OC deficit. These results dictate how to improve PQD optoelectronic properties and PV device performance and explain the reduced interfacial recombination observed by coupling PQDs with thin-film perovskites for a hybrid absorber layer.
