Euphorbia characias: Phytochemistry and Biological Activities

The aim of this review is to summarize all the compounds identified and characterized from Euphorbia characias, along with the biological activities reported for this plant. Euphorbia is one of the greatest genera in the spurge family of Euphorbiaceae and includes different kinds of plants characterized by the presence of milky latex. Among them, the species Euphorbia characias L. is an evergreen perennial shrub widely distributed in Mediterranean countries. E. characias latex and extracts from different parts of the plant have been extensively studied, leading to the identification of several chemical components such as terpenoids, sterol hydrocarbons, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, cerebrosides and phenolic and carboxylic acids. The biological properties range between antioxidant activities, antimicrobial, antiviral and pesticidal activities, wound-healing properties, anti-aging and hypoglycemic properties and inhibitory activities toward target enzymes related to different diseases, such as cholinesterases and xanthine oxidase. The information available in this review allows us to consider the plant E. characias as a potential source of compounds for biomedical research.

Chemical constituents of Citrus sinensis var. Shukri from Pakistan

The variety 'Shukri' is a new hybrid of Citrus sinensis and is frequently grown for its sweet edible fruits in the southern part of Pakistan. The leaves of this hybrid variety have been investigated in search of secondary metabolites for the first time. As a result of chromatographic analysis of the methanolic extract, a new ceramide along with a flavonone glycoside and two steroids has been isolated, which were spectroscopically characterized as (E)-N-(1,3,4,5-tetrahydroxyhexadecan-2-yl)dec-4-enamide (1), atripliside B (2), beta-sitosterol (3), and beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (4), respectively. Compound 1 was found to be a new addition in the list of natural products, whereas, to the best of our knowledge, compounds 2-4 have been isolated for the first time from this source.

New cerebrosides from Euphorbia peplis L.: antimicrobial activity evaluation

The less polar fraction of the methanolic extract from the plant Euphorbia peplis L. exhibited interesting antifungal and antitubercular activity. A complex mixture of four glucocerebrosides was responsible for this activity. Two new cerebrosides were isolated for the first time from Euphorbiaceae, 4 was assigned as 1-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-(2S,3S,4E,8E)-2N-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxy-hexadecanoyl]-4 (E), 8 (E)-octadecadiene-1,3-diol and 3 as the 1-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-(2S,3S,4R,8Z)-2N-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxytetracosanoyl]-8 (Z)-octadecene-1,3,4-triol. The structures were determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences. Mass spectrometry of dimethyl disulfide derivatives was useful for the determination of the double-bond positions in the long-chain bases.

Preliminary biological assay on cerebroside mixture from Euphorbia nicaeensis All. Isolation and structure determination of five glucocerebrosides

Preliminary studies of in vitro cytostatic activity on less polar fraction of the MeOH extract of the plant Euphorbia nicaeensis All., carried out on KB cells, have evinced a relatively low ability of extract to inhibit cell growth. Successive, five glucocerebrosides were isolated from the cerebroside molecular species obtained from this extract using normal and reversed phase column 'flash-chromatography'. The structures of these cerebrosides were determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences. Mass spectrometry of dimethyl disulfide derivatives was useful for the determination of the double-bond positions in the long-chain bases.

Cerebrosides and terpene glycosides from the root of Aster scaber

Three cerebrosides 2, 3, and 5 and two terpene glycosides 1 and 4 have been isolated from the methanol extract of the root of Aster scaber. Their structures were determined as 3-O-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-oleanolic acid methyl ester (1), (2S, 3S, 4R, 2'R, 8Z, 15'Z)-N-2'-hydroxy-15'-tetracosenoyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-4-hydroxy-8-sphingenine (2), (2S, 3S, 4R, 8Z)-N-octadecanoyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-4-hydroxy-8-sphingenine (3), 1alpha-hydroxy-6beta-O-beta-D-glucosyl-eudesm-3-ene (4), and (2S, 3S, 4R, 2'R, 8Z)-N-2'-hydroxy-hexadecanoyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-4-hydroxy-8-sphingenine (5) on the basis of spectroscopic methods.
