Rheological insights on Carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels

Hydrogels are copiously studied for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and bone regeneration owing to their water content, mechanical strength, and elastic behaviour. The preparation of stable and mechanically strengthened hydrogels without using toxic crosslinkers and expensive approaches is immensely challenging. In this study, we prepared Carboxymethyl cellulose based hydrogels with different polymer concentration via a less expensive physical crosslinking approach without using any toxic crosslinkers and evaluated their mechanical strength. In this hydrogel system, the carbopol concentration was fixed at 1 wt/v% and the Carboxymethyl cellulose concentration was varied between 1 and 5 wt/v%. In this hydrogel system, Carbopol serves as the crosslinker to bridge Carboxymethyl cellulose polymer through hydrogen bonds. Rheological analysis was employed in assessing the mechanical properties of the prepared hydrogel, in particular, the viscoelastic behaviour of the hydrogels. The viscoelastic nature and mechanical strength of the hydrogels increased with an increase in the Carboxymethyl cellulose polymer concentration. Further, our results suggested that gels with Carboxymethyl cellulose concentration between 3 wt/v % and 4 wt/v % with yield stresses of 58.83 Pa and 81.47 Pa, respectively, are potential candidates for use in transdermal drug delivery. The prepared hydrogels possessed high thermal stability and retained their gel network structure even at 50 °C. These findings are beneficial for biomedical applications in transdermal drug delivery and tissue engineering owing to the biocompatibility, stability, and mechanical strength of the prepared hydrogels.

Chitosan-Based Therapeutic Systems for Superficial Candidiasis Treatment. Synergetic Activity of Nystatin and Propolis

The paper deals with new approaches to chitosan (CS)-based antifungal therapeutic formulations designed to fulfill the requirements of specific applications. Gel-like formulations were prepared by mixing CS dissolved in aqueous lactic acid (LA) solution with nystatin (NYS) powder and/or propolis (PRO) aqueous solution dispersed in glycerin, followed by water evaporation to yield flexible mesoporous (pore widths of 2-4 nm) films of high specific surfaces between 1 × 103 and 1.7 × 103 m2/g. Morphological evaluation of the antifungal films showed uniform dispersion and downsizing of NYS crystallites (with initial sizes up to 50 μm). Their mechanical properties were found to be close to those of soft tissues (Young's modulus values between 0.044-0.025 MPa). The films presented hydration capacities in physiological condition depending on their composition, i.e., higher for NYS-charged (628%), as compared with PRO loaded films (118-129%). All NYS charged films presented a quick release for the first 10 min followed by a progressive increase of the release efficiency at 48.6%, for the samples containing NYS alone and decreasing values with increasing amount of PRO to 45.9% and 42.8% after 5 h. By in vitro analysis, the hydrogels with acidic pH values around 3.8 were proven to be active against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata species. The time-killing assay performed during 24 h on Candida albicans in synthetic vagina-simulative medium showed that the hydrogel formulations containing both NYS and PRO presented the faster slowing down of the fungal growth, from colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL of 1.24 × 107 to CFU/mL < 10 (starting from the first 6 h).

Jellyfish-like few-layer graphene nanoflakes: high paramagnetic response alongside increased interlayer interaction

Jellyfish-like graphene nanoflakes (GNF), prepared by hydrocarbon pyrolysis, are studied with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. The results are supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data. Oxidized (GNFox) and N-doped oxidized (N-GNFox) flakes exhibit an extremely high EPR response associated with a large interlayer interaction which is caused by the structure of nanoflakes and layer edges reached by oxygen. The GNFox and N-GNFox provide the localized and mobile paramagnetic centers which are silent in the pristine (GNF p ) and N-doped (N-GNF) samples. The change in the relative intensity of the line corresponding to delocalized electrons is parallel with the number of radicals in the quaternary N-group. The environment of localized and mobile electrons is different. The results can be important in GNF synthesis and for explanation of their features in applications, especially, in devices with high sensitivity to weak electromagnetic field.
