Abstract
Introduction In 2015, the World Health Organization introduced intrinsic capacity, a health indicator encompassing five domains aimed at promoting healthy aging. Multicomponent exercise programs are recommended to maintain and optimize intrinsic capacity; however, evidence on their effects in robust older adults is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a multicomponent exercise program on intrinsic capacity in older adults. Methods Older adults (≥60 years) enrolled in a multicomponent training program in Porto Alegre (RS) were evaluated for intrinsic capacity using specific tests for each domain. The total score, ranging from 0 to 10 points, was obtained by summing the scores of the five domains. Participants underwent a 12-week multicomponent exercise intervention and were reassessed. Results After the 12-week intervention, the composite intrinsic capacity score significantly increased. Significant improvements were found in the cognitive, vitality and locomotion domains. The practice of Chinese curative gymnastics contributed to a one-point increase in the composite intrinsic capacity score. No association was found between frequency, duration of training, or the number of exercise modalities and the composite intrinsic capacity score. Conclusion The multicomponent exercise program positively influenced composite intrinsic capacity, with notable improvements in vitality, cognition, and mobility. Personalization and individualization of training, combined with health education and social integration, were crucial in promoting healthy aging in the studied sample.

Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death globally, particularly impacting low- and middle-income countries and rural dwellers. Therefore, this programme aimed to investigate if a community-based mind-body PA programme implemented in a low-resource setting could improve health-related physical fitness outcomes. Black overweight or obese adult women (25 ± 4.7 years) with a body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg·m-2 recruited from a rural settlement in South Africa with manifest risk factors for multimorbidity were assigned to a 10-week waiting-to-treat non-exercising control group (n = 65) or a community-based mind-body programme (n = 60) consisting of 45-60 min, thrice-weekly Tae-Bo. The intervention resulted in significant (p ≤ 0.05) improvements in body weight (p = 0.043), BMI (p = 0.037), and waist (p = 0.031) and hip circumferences (p = 0.040). Flexibility was found to be significantly increased at mid- and post-programme (p = 0.033 and p = 0.025, respectively) as was static balance (mid: p = 0.022; post: p = 0.019), hand grip strength (mid: p = 0.034; post: p = 0.029), sit-up performance (mid: p = 0.021; post: p = 0.018), and cardiorespiratory endurance (mid: p = 0.017; post: p = 0.011). No significant change was found in sum of skinfolds following the programme (p = 0.057). Such a community-based mind-body programme presents an opportunity to level health inequalities and positively improve health-related physical fitness in low-resource communities irrespective of the underlying barriers to participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To prevent the risk of stair descent falls and associated injuries in the older adults, it is important to understand the factors that affect this frequent locomotion of daily living. The fact that falls are in most cases the result of the interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic factors is very often underestimated when designing test protocols. RESEARCH QUESTION This study aimed at evaluating balance control during and immediately after step down onto an unstable surface. METHODS Physically active men and women aged 60-69 years (n = 28) and 70-79 years (n = 18) were asked to perform a step down onto a foam pad and stand still for 30 s (restabilization phase). Centre of pressure (CoP) velocity and standard deviation of CoP sway in anteroposterior and mediolateral direction were evaluated during the step down (CoP VAP, CoP VML, CoP SDAP, CoP SDML) and in the first 5 s of restabilization (CoP VAP5, CoP VML5, CoP SDAP5, CoP SDML5). In addition, time to complete step was investigated. RESULTS Participants aged 70-79 years presented worse ML balance control after step down onto an unstable surface than their younger counterparts. This was represented by the significantly higher values of CoP SDML5 and CoP VML5 (p = 0.022 and p = 0.017). No other significant differences were detected. SIGNIFICANCE Age is associated with a more significant ML center of pressure velocity and sway after step down onto a foam pad in physically active older adults. Exercises aimed at improving ML balance control in unstable conditions should be the subject of physical interventions even in older adults with overall good state of health and physical fitness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of community-based resistance training (RT) on physical function for older adults with mobility disability. DATA SOURCES Four databases (PEDro, MedLine, Ovid, CINAHL and Web of Science) were searched from inception to February 2, 2021. STUDY SELECTION Randomized controlled trials that examined community-based RT for improving physical function in community-dwelling older adults were included. DATA EXTRACTION Two reviewers independently conducted title and abstract screening, full-text evaluation, data extraction, and risk of bias quality assessment. DATA SYNTHESIS Twenty-four studies (3,656 participants, age range 63-83 years) were included. RT programs ranged from 10 weeks to 18 months in duration. RT was more effective than control in improving 6MWT distance (n=638; mean difference (MD) 16.1 meters; 95% CI 12.27-19.94, p<0.0001), lower extremity strength (n=785; standard MD 2.01; 95% CI 1.27-2.75, p<0.0001) and usual gait speed (n= 2,106; MD 0.05 meters/second, 95% CI 0.03-0.07, p<0.001). In sensitivity analyses, benefits were maintained when studies with a high risk of bias were excluded. There was no effect of RT on fast gait speed or Short Physical Performance Battery score compared to control. CONCLUSIONS RT improves walking distance, lower extremity strength, and usual gait speed in older adults with mobility disability. Improvements in physical function could increase independence in activities of daily living for this at-risk population.

Abstract
Background In the last few decades, research related to balance in older adults has been conducted in lab-based settings. The lack of portability and high cost that is associated with the current gold standard methods to quantify body balance limits their application to community settings such as independent living facilities. The purpose of the study was to examine the relative and absolute reliability and the convergent validity of static standing balance performance using an accelerometer device. Methods A total of 131 participants (85% female, mean age 80 ± 8 years) were included for the validity aim, and a subsample of 38 participants were enrolled in the reliability testing (89% female, mean age 76 ± 7 years). The root-mean-square (RMS) and normalized path length (NPL) for sway in antero-posterior (AP) and medio-lateral (ML) directions were calculated for different standing balance conditions. Test-retest reliability was assessed over two testing visits occurring 1 week apart using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for relative reliability, and the minimal detectable change (MDC) was calculated for the absolute reliability. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to test convergent validity at baseline between balance measurements and related mobility measures. Results Reliability of balance performance using accelerometers was good to excellent with ICC values ranging from 0.41 to 0.83 for RMS sway and from 0.49 to 0.82 for NPL sway. However, the ICC during semi-tandem stance in A-P direction was 0.35, indicating poor reliability. The MDC of the sway measurements ranged from 2.4 to 9.4 for the RMS and 5.2 to 13.8 for the NPL. Balance measurements were correlated with mobility measurements. Conclusions Using a portable accelerometer to quantify static standing postural control provides reliable measurements in community settings.
