The Readiness Potential Correlates with Action-Linked Modulation of Visual Accuracy

Simple actions modulate context-dependent visual size perception at late processing stages

A simple button press towards a prime stimulus enhances subsequent visual search for objects that match the prime. The present study investigated whether this action effect is a general phenomenon across different task domains, and the underlying neural mechanisms. The action effect was measured in an unspeeded size-matching task, with the presentation of the central target and the surrounding inducers of the Ebbinghaus illusion together to one eye or separately to each eye, and when repetitive TMS was applied over right primary motor cortex (M1). The results showed that a prior key-press significantly reduced the illusion effect compared to passive viewing. Notably, the action effect persisted with dichoptic presentation of the Ebbinghaus configuration, but disappeared with the right M1 disruption. These results suggest that action guides visual perception to influence human behavior, which mainly affects the late visual processing stage and probably relies on feedback projections from the motor cortex.

Investigating the impact of early deafness on learned action-effect contingency for action linked to peripheral sensory effects

Investigating peripheral visual processing in individuals with early auditory deprivation is a critical research area in the field of neuroscience, since it helps understanding the phenomenon of sensory adaptation and brain plasticity after sensory loss. Prior research has already demonstrated that the absence of auditory input, which is crucial to detect events occurring out of the central egocentric visual space, leads to an improved processing of visual and tactile stimuli occurring in peripheral regions of the sensory space. Nevertheless, no prior studies have explored whether such enhanced processing also takes place within the domain of action, particularly when individuals are required to perform actions that produce peripheral sensory outcomes. To test this hypothesis, we recruited 15 hearing (31 ± 3.3 years) and 15 early deaf adults (42 ± 2.6 years) for a neuro-behavioral experiment involving: 1) a behavioral task where participants executed a simple motor action (i.e., a button press) and received a visual feedback either in the center or in a peripheral region of the visual field, and 2) the electrophysiological recording of brain electrical potentials (EEG). We measured and compared neural activity preceding the motor action (the readiness potentials) and visual evoked responses (the N1 and P2 ERP components) and found that deaf individuals did not exhibit more pronounced modulation of neural responses when their motor actions resulted in peripheral visual stimuli compared to their hearing counterparts. Instead they showed a reduced modulation when visual stimuli were presented in the center. Our results suggest a redistribution of attentional resources from center to periphery in deaf individuals during sensorimotor coupling.

Cross-domain prediction approach of human lower limb voluntary movement intention for exoskeleton robot based on EEG signals

Background and Objective

Exoskeleton robot control should ideally be based on human voluntary movement intention. The readiness potential (RP) component of the motion-related cortical potential is observed before movement in the electroencephalogram and can be used for intention prediction. However, its single-trial features are weak and highly variable, and existing methods cannot achieve high cross-temporal and cross-subject accuracies in practical online applications. Therefore, this work aimed to combine a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework with a transfer learning (TL) strategy to predict the lower limb voluntary movement intention, thereby improving the accuracy while enhancing the model generalization capability; this would also provide sufficient processing time for the response of the exoskeleton robotic system and help realize robot control based on the intention of the human body.

Methods

The signal characteristics of the RP for lower limb movement were analyzed, and a parameter TL strategy based on CNN was proposed to predict the intention of voluntary lower limb movements. We recruited 10 subjects for offline and online experiments. Multivariate empirical-mode decomposition was used to remove the artifacts, and the moment of onset of voluntary movement was labeled using lower limb electromyography signals during network training.

Results

The RP features can be observed from multiple data overlays before the onset of voluntary lower limb movements, and these features have long latency periods. The offline experimental results showed that the average movement intention prediction accuracy was 95.23% ± 1.25% for the right leg and 91.21% ± 1.48% for the left leg, which showed good cross-temporal and cross-subject generalization while greatly reducing the training time. Online movement intention prediction can predict results about 483.9 ± 11.9 ms before movement onset with an average accuracy of 82.75%.

Conclusion

The proposed method has a higher prediction accuracy with a lower training time, has good generalization performance for cross-temporal and cross-subject aspects, and is well-prioritized in terms of the temporal responses; these features are expected to lay the foundation for further investigations on exoskeleton robot control.

Libet's legacy: A primer to the neuroscience of volition

The neuroscience of volition is an emerging subfield of the brain sciences, with hundreds of papers on the role of consciousness in action formation published each year. This makes the state-of-the-art in the discipline poorly accessible to newcomers and difficult to follow even for experts in the field. Here we provide a comprehensive summary of research in this field since its inception that will be useful to both groups. We also discuss important ideas that have received little coverage in the literature so far. We systematically reviewed a set of 2220 publications, with detailed consideration of almost 500 of the most relevant papers. We provide a thorough introduction to the seminal work of Benjamin Libet from the 1960s to 1980s. We also discuss common criticisms of Libet's method, including temporal introspection, the interpretation of the assumed physiological correlates of volition, and various conceptual issues. We conclude with recent advances and potential future directions in the field, highlighting modern methodological approaches to volition, as well as important recent findings.
