Metasurfaces with Maximum Chirality Empowered by Bound States in the Continuum

We demonstrate that rotationally symmetric chiral metasurfaces can support sharp resonances with the maximum optical chirality determined by precise shaping of bound states in the continuum (BICs). Being uncoupled from one circular polarization of light and resonantly coupled to its counterpart, a metasurface hosting the chiral BIC resonance exhibits a narrow peak in the circular dichroism spectrum with the quality factor limited by weak dissipation losses. We propose a realization of such chiral BIC metasurfaces based on pairs of dielectric bars and validate the concept of maximum chirality by numerical simulations.

On the Failure of Classic Elasticity in Predicting Elastic Wave Propagation in Gyroid Lattices for Very Long Wavelengths

In this work we investigate the properties of elastic waves propagating in gyroid lattices. First, we rigorously characterize the lattice from the point of view of crystallography. Second, we use Bloch–Floquet analysis to compute the dispersion relations for elastic waves. The results for very long wavelengths are then compared to those given by classic elasticity for a cubic material. A discrepancy is found in terms of the polarization of waves and it is related to the noncentrosymmetry of the gyroid. The gyroid lattice results to be acoustically active, meaning that transverse waves exhibit a circular polarization when they propagate along an axis of rotational symmetry. This phenomenon is present even for very long wavelengths and is not captured by classic elasticity.

Axial point groups: rank 1, 2, 3 and 4 property tensor tables

The form of a physical property tensor of a quasi-one-dimensional material such as a nanotube or a polymer is determined from the material's axial point group. Tables of the form of rank 1, 2, 3 and 4 property tensors are presented for a wide variety of magnetic and non-magnetic tensor types invariant under each point group in all 31 infinite series of axial point groups. An application of these tables is given in the prediction of the net polarization and magnetic-field-induced polarization in a one-dimensional longitudinal conical magnetic structure in multiferroic hexaferrites.

Calculating anisotropic piezoelectric properties from texture data using the MTEX open source package

This paper presents the background for the calculation of anisotropic piezoelectric properties of single crystals and the graphical display of the results in two or three dimensions, and the calculation of the aggregate properties from constituent crystals and the texture of the aggregate in a coherent manner. The texture data can be obtained from a wide range of sources, including pole figure diffraction and single orientation measurements (electron backscattered diffraction, electron channelling pattern, Laue Pattern, optical microscope universal-stage). We consider the elastic wave propagation in piezoelectric crystals as an example of the interaction of electrical (2nd rank tensor), piezoelectric (3rd rank tensor) and elastic properties (4th rank tensor). In particular, we give explicit formulae for the calculation of the Voigt averaged tensor from individual orientations or from an orientation distribution function. For the latter we consider numerical integration and an approach based on the expansion into spherical harmonics. We illustrate the methods using single crystals, polycrystalline quartz measured using electron channelling patterns and ideal Curie limiting groups applied to quartz aggregates. This paper also serves as a reference paper for the mathematical tensor capabilities of the texture analysis software MTEX.

On physical property tensors invariant under line groups

The form of physical property tensors of a quasi-one-dimensional material such as a nanotube or a polymer can be determined from the point group of its symmetry group, one of an infinite number of line groups. Such forms are calculated using a method based on the use of trigonometric summations. With this method, it is shown that materials invariant under infinite subsets of line groups have physical property tensors of the same form. For line group types of a family of line groups characterized by an index n and a physical property tensor of rank m, the form of the tensor for all line group types indexed with n > m is the same, leaving only a finite number of tensor forms to be determined.
