Measuring treatment outcomes and client satisfaction in a partial hospitalization program

Mental health practitioners are increasingly being called on to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment they provide. The partial hospitalization component of the mental health industry also has felt this call for outcome research. This article presents the results of one program's attempts to answer that call through an assessment of treatment outcome and client satisfaction at a partial hospitalization program. Participants (N = 287) were evaluated at admission, discharge, and 3-month follow-up. The article outlines the procedures used for assessment and uses the results as an example of the type of data that can be obtained through outcomes measurement. The article is intended to provide an example of program evaluation that is easy and inexpensive to administer.

The drug-of-choice phenomenon psychological differences among drug users who preferred different drugs

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the Sensation Seeking Scale, and the Brief Symptom Inventory were administered to 125 recovering drug users with three or more months abstinent from drugs. Subjects were divided according to drug preference: opiates, stimulants, marijuana, alcohol, and a polydrug preference. Opiate users were significantly higher in Susceptibility to Boredom. Alcohol misusers compared to a combined stimulant, opiate, and polydrug group were significantly lower in Extroversion and Susceptibility to Boredom. Subjects raised in drug/alcohol-using families scored significantly higher on Neuroticism and on the Positive Symptom Total of the BSI, and had a higher rate of suicidality.

The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) as an outcome measure for adult psychiatric inpatients

In this study the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis & Spencer, 1982) was administered to 89 males and 128 females at admission and discharge from a private psychiatric hospital. For mean scores, statistically significant decreases were observed on all BSI scales and global indices. Effect sizes ranged from high medium to large. Also, when clinical significance indices were calculated with regard to changes made by individual patients, we found that approximately 50% of all inpatients evidenced a decrease on the Global Severity Index (GSI), which meets the dual criteria of significant change and posttreatment functioning in the normal range. Compared with inpatient norms (Derogatis & Spencer, 1982), our sample generally scored higher at admission and lower at discharge.

The Brief Symptom Inventory as an Outcome Measure for Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatients

The utility of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) as an outcome measure for adolescent psychiatric inpatients was evaluated. The BSI was administered to 88 male and 100 female psychiatric inpatients at admission and discharge. There were statistically significant mean score changes from pretest to posttest on most BSI indices, with effect sizes ranging between small and medium. Statistical analyses produced generally equivalent results, whether T scores or raw scores were used as dependent variables. However, the ability of the BSI to detect pretest to posttest change reliably for individual patients was quite limited. The degree of symptom distress reported by adolescent inpatients, moreover, did not differ greatly from those found in normative data for adolescent non-patients. It is possible that this relative lack of discrimination between adolescent inpatients and non-patients may be associated with limitations inherent in using self-report inventories with adolescent populations.

The effect of pre-bed care on alcoholic patients' behavior during inpatient treatment

Sixty-five alcoholic patients admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation unit were studied regarding the effect of an outpatient pre-bed care participation program on subsequent behavior. There were no differences in on-ward behavior between the pre-bed care and direct admission patients. However, the pre-bed care patients were less likely to leave the inpatient unit AMA and more likely to still be active in aftercare treatment 6 months after discharge.
