A pseudoseasonal reproductive strategy in a tropical rodent, Peromyscus nudipes

A multi-site study of the relationship between photoperiod and ovulation rate using Natural Cycles data

Many species exhibit seasonal patterns of breeding. Although humans can shield themselves from many season-related stressors, they appear to exhibit seasonal patterns of investment in reproductive function nonetheless, with levels of sex steroid hormones being highest during the spring and summer months. The current research builds on this work, examining the relationship between day length and ovarian function in two large samples of women using data from the Natural Cycles birth control application in each Sweden and the United States. We hypothesized that longer days would predict higher ovulation rates and sexual motivation. Results revealed that increasing day length duration predicts increased ovulation rate and sexual behavior, even while controlling for other relevant factors. Results suggest that day length may contribute to observed variance in women's ovarian function and sexual desire.

Evolution in reproductive tempo and investment across the Peromyscus radiation

Mammals display diverse reproductive strategies, however, the ultimate and proximate mechanisms that underlie this diversity and its composite traits remain poorly understood from both evolutionary and physiological perspectives. The Peromyscus genus of rodents, which is found throughout the north and central Americas, has diversified along life history gradients, varying both within and among species in reproductive strategies. This variation provides a useful model for studying reproductive diversity. Here, we combine a literature review with new analyses of captive colony breeding records from six Peromyscus species to assess our current understanding of how plasticity and local adaptation contribute to diversity in two classes of reproductive traits: phenology and litter investment. There is substantial evidence that many traits underlying phenology and litter investment have diverged among populations in ways that are likely to be locally adaptive, though plasticity in these traits remains common. However, these conclusions are largely based on data collected from the two most widespread Peromyscus species: P. maniculatus and P. leucopus. The majority of Peromyscus species diversity remains understudied regarding reproductive phenology and litter traits. We conclude by discussing key challenges and considerations relevant to using Peromyscus as a mammalian model for reproductive trait diversity and evolution moving forward.

Climate change and seasonal reproduction in mammals

Seasonal reproduction is common among mammals at all latitudes, even in the deep tropics. This paper (i) discusses the neuroendocrine pathways via which foraging conditions and predictive cues such as photoperiod enforce seasonality, (ii) considers the kinds of seasonal challenges mammals actually face in natural habitats, and (iii) uses the information thus generated to suggest how seasonal reproduction might be influenced by global climate change. Food availability and ambient temperature determine energy balance, and variation in energy balance is the ultimate cause of seasonal breeding in all mammals and the proximate cause in many. Photoperiodic cueing is common among long-lived mammals from the highest latitudes down to the mid-tropics. It is much less common in shorter lived mammals at all latitudes. An unknown predictive cue triggers reproduction in some desert and dry grassland species when it rains. The available information suggests that as our climate changes the small rodents of the world may adapt rather easily but the longer lived mammals whose reproduction is regulated by photoperiod may not do so well. A major gap in our knowledge concerns the tropics; that is where most species live and where we have the least understanding of how reproduction is regulated by environmental factors.

Tracking the seasons: the internal calendars of vertebrates

Animals have evolved many season-specific behavioural and physiological adaptations that allow them to both cope with and exploit the cyclic annual environment. Two classes of endogenous annual timekeeping mechanisms enable animals to track, anticipate and prepare for the seasons: a timer that measures an interval of several months and a clock that oscillates with a period of approximately a year. Here, we discuss the basic properties and biological substrates of these timekeeping mechanisms, as well as their reliance on, and encoding of environmental cues to accurately time seasonal events. While the separate classification of interval timers and circannual clocks has elucidated important differences in their underlying properties, comparative physiological investigations, especially those regarding seasonal prolactin secretions, hint at the possibility of common substrates.

A light and scanning electron microscopic study of the epididymis active state of the endemic Mexican rodent Peromyscus winkelmanni (Carleton) (Rodentia: Muridae)

The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the epididymis of the sexually mature Peromyscus winkelmanni (carleton) was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The epididymis was divided into three regions: caput, corpus and cauda. The epididymal duct was lined with columnar and cubic epithelium with stereocilia and covered by a muscular connective tissue sheath. Capillaries appear to penetrate directly into the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue in the initial segment. The epididymal epithelium presents four cell types: principal, basal, apical and clear cells. Based on morphological differences (height of epithelial cells, length of the stereocilia, luminal area, larger diameter and spermatic index), the epididymis of P. winkelmanni, presents seven zones. The stereocilia of the epididymal ducts of zones I, II, IV and V are thick and tall, while in zone III they are thin and short. The stereocilia in zone VI are thin, while in zone VII they are short but thick. The secretory products observed in the lumen of the epididymal ducts have vesicular, granular and fibrous form in the seven zones. This study contributes to an understanding of the morphofunctional features of the epididymis in sperm maturation in a species that shows seasonal reproductive activity.

Neonatal exposure to short days and low temperatures blunts stress response and yields low fluctuating asymmetry in Siberian hamsters

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) refers to small, non-directional deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry in morphological characters. Individuals with low FA presumably either developed in a relatively stable environment and/or were better able to buffer against developmental stressors. The present study investigated the effects of seasonal factors measured by day length and ambient temperature manipulations on the development of bilateral characters and concomitant changes in stress responses. Siberian hamsters were exposed to either long days (16 h of light per day) or short days (8 h of light per day) combined with either standard temperatures (21+/-2 degrees C) or low temperatures (8+/-2 degrees C) on the day of birth until weaning. Cortisol concentrations at baseline and following acute restraint stress, and FA values were measured in adulthood. Females reared in winter-like conditions with short day lengths and low temperatures had low FA and low cortisol concentrations following restraint stress compared to other females. Females reared in long day lengths and standard temperatures had the highest rate of increase in cortisol concentrations after restraint among other female groups. No group effects were observed in males regarding day length and temperature manipulations. Baseline and post-restraint cortisol concentrations were higher in females than males for all groups except in animals reared in short day lengths and low temperatures. Our results suggest that winter-like conditions during neonatal period evoke hyposensitivity to stress in adult females and this blunted response to stress is a key factor in achieving ideal growth patterns.

Abnormal response of the neuropeptide Y-deficient mouse reproductive axis to food deprivation but not lactation

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) plays a key role in both food intake and GnRH secretion. Food deprivation elevates hypothalamic NPY activity and suppresses LH and gonadal steroid secretion. Similarly, lactation up-regulates NPY expression as food consumption increases and estrous cycles cease. These observations suggest that NPY coordinates reproductive suppression in response to energy deficiency; if so, the reproductive axis of NPY knockout (KO) mice should be impervious to lactation and food deprivation. We monitored food consumption, body weight, and estrous cyclicity during lactation in NPY KO mice with large and small litters. NPY KO mice with either litter size resembled wild types (WTs) in weight regulation and food consumption. Large-litter mothers had longer anestrous periods and smaller pups at weaning, but NPY KOs and WTs did not differ in either respect. We also examined the LH response of NPY KO mice to 48 h without food. Basal levels of LH in ovariectomized NPY KO animals decreased in response to fasting, but LH levels in intact and estrogen-treated ovariectomized NPY KO animals did not. In contrast, WTs consistently showed fasting-induced suppression of LH. Our findings suggest that other systems can sustain the hyperphagia of lactation and NPY alone is not responsible for suppressing cyclicity during lactation. Nevertheless, the suppression of basal LH release that accompanies food deprivation in normal female mice appears to require the steroid-dependent actions of NPY.

Short day length alone does not inhibit spermatogenesis in the seasonally breeding four-striped field mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio)

This study was an examination of the effect of photoperiod on spermatogenesis and the accessory glands of the four-striped field mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio), a seasonally breeding rodent that occurs through Southern Africa. Adult scrotal males were exposed to either short day length (10L:14D), long day length (14L:10D), or natural photoperiod in constant-environment rooms (25 degrees C, 41% humidity; food and water ad libitum) for 8 wk in late summer, when males in the wild were spermatogenically active, and in mid-winter, when they were inactive. In neither experiment did prolonged exposure to short day length or naturally decreasing day length inhibit spermatogenic activity, and we conclude that the normal cessation of spermatogenesis that occurs in most male four-striped field mice in winter is not stimulated by day length alone.

Sensitivity of Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to amplitudes and rates of photoperiodic change typical of the tropics

Empirical data suggest that reproductive photoresponsiveness occurs in some populations of mammals above 13 degrees of latitude, but may be absent in populations from 0 degrees to 10 degrees of latitude. The present experiments examined the degree to which the low amplitude of change in photoperiod in the tropics constrains mammals from using daylength as a seasonal cue. The Syrian hamster, a temperate-zone species, was studied because of its well-documented ability to respond to small changes in photoperiod, and because of the absence of an alternative robustly responding species from the tropics. We subjected adult male hamsters to photoperiods that mimicked the amplitude and rate of photoperiod change of 30 degrees, 20 degrees, 10 degrees, and 5 degrees of latitude, but centered around an estimate of their critical daylength. For comparison, a fifth group was subjected to an abrupt change in daylength of a magnitude equal to the total annual variation occurring at 30 degrees. The two groups experiencing the gradually changing daylengths of 30 degrees and 20 degrees showed less within-group synchrony during testicular regression; in other dimensions of the annual testis cycle, including the degree of synchrony exhibited during recrudescence, they reacted similarly to the hamsters given the abrupt change in daylength. Some of the hamsters exposed to the gradually changing daylengths of 10 degrees responded to this challenge, as did a few in the 5 degrees treatment--in both cases, with poor within-group synchrony and a submaximal decrease in testis size. In an abbreviated second experiment, hamsters given abrupt decreases in daylength of magnitudes equal to those of the 10 degrees and 5 degrees groups responded slightly more frequently, and with maximal decreases in testis size. This suggests that mammals may not be constrained absolutely by an inability to respond to changes in photoperiod at 5 degrees to 10 degrees latitude. Seasonally breeding populations of mammals in the deep tropics that do not use photoperiod to regulate reproduction may use nonphotoperiodic cues because they offer a higher signal-to-noise ratio than do tropical changes in photoperiod.
