Proteomic Analysis Reveals Differential Protein Expression in Placental Tissues of Early-Onset Preeclampsia Patients

Preeclampsia, a significant cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, remains poorly understood, in terms of its pathogenesis. This study aims to uncover novel and effective biomarkers for preeclampsia by conducting a comparative analysis of differential proteins in placentas from early onset preeclampsia (EOPE) and normal pregnancies. Utilizing tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics, we identified differentially expressed proteins in placental tissues from 15 EOPE patients and 15 normal pregnant women. These proteins were subsequently validated by using parallel reaction monitoring (PRM). Our analysis revealed a total of 59 differentially expressed proteins, with 25 up-regulated and 34 down-regulated proteins in EOPE placental tissues compared to those from normal pregnancies. Validation through PRM confirmed the differential expression of 6 proteins. Our findings suggest these 6 proteins could play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of EOPE, highlighting the potential involvement of the estrogen signaling pathway and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) pathway in the development of preeclampsia. Improving the Visualization of Superior Longitudinal Fascicule-2 and Superior Longitudinal Fascicule -3 Using Photoshop Filters

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Several studies are currently exploring the anatomical origins of superior longitudinal fascicule (SLF) 2 and SLF-3, which are components of the frontoparietal network. This study aimed to achieve optimum visualization of the anatomical corridors of these fibers using Photoshop filters.

METHODS

Four postmortem brain hemispheres were dissected in accordance with the method proposed by Klingler and Ludwig. Dissections were performed under a surgical microscope (Carl Zeiss AG, Oberkochen, Germany) at 4× and 40× magnification. All dissections were documented at each stage using a professional digital camera (Canon EOS 600D) with a macro 100 mm lens (Canon), ring-flash attachment (Canon), and professional tripod (Manfrotto 808 C4). We aimed to improve the visual quality of the images by avoiding monotone using various the features and filters in Photoshop.

RESULTS

SLF-2 originates from the angular gyrus (Brodmann area [BA] 39) in the right hemisphere and has been observed to project fibers from BA7 and BA19 and toward BA8, 9, 10, and 46. Further, these fibers traverse from the depths of BA40, 2, 3, 1, and 6 as they progress. SLF-2 also projects fibers from the supramarginal gyrus in the left hemisphere. SLF-3 lies between the supramarginal gyrus and the inferior frontal lobe in both the right and left hemispheres.

CONCLUSIONS

The visual descriptions of the dissections were enriched after using Photoshop to avoid monotony. Increasing the visual quality with Photoshop features enable us to gain a better understanding of these pathways. Additionally, it facilitates the comprehension of the symptoms associated with pathology. We hope these results will further aid in reducing the occurrence of postoperative complications.

Bronchial balloon dilatation combined with cryotherapy for tuberculous cicatricial central airway stenosis, with Adobe Photoshop for the degree measurement: A multicenter, retrospective study

Objective

To explore bronchial balloon dilation (BD) combined with cryotherapy and Photoshop (PS)-base image processing technology in the interventional treatment of tuberculous cicatricial central airway stenosis (CCAS).

Methods

This multicenter, retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of patients with CCAS from six hospitals in Henan, China between June 2019 and October 2022.

Results

A total of 307 patients were included, including 152 (62 males) treated with BD alone and 155 (54 males) treated with BD combined with cryotherapy. One month after treatment, compared with the BD group, the total response rate [133 (85.8) vs. 105 (69.1), P < 0.001] and occurrence of restenosis at 1-monthaftertreatment [22 (14.2 %) vs. 47 (30.9 %), P < 0.001] in BD & cryotherapy group were significantly higher; furthermore, the inner diameter of the airway stenosis (8.1 ± 0.9 mm vs. 6.4 ± 1.5 mm, P < 0.001), the cross-sectional area of the airway stenosis (51.6 ± 7.8 mm2 vs. 33.1 ± 11.6 mm2, P < 0.001), FEV1 (5.26 ± 0.42 L vs. 4.32 ± 0.31 L, P < 0.001), and PEF (5.72 ± 0.36 L/s vs. 4.56 ± 0.42 L/s, P < 0.001) in BD & cryotherapy group showed significantly more improvements. Moreover, Pearson's correlation analysis showed significantly strong positive correlation (r = 0.818，P < 0.001) between the cross-sectional area of airway stenosis measured by PS-base image processing technology and the inner diameter of airway stenosis measured by chest CT.

Conclusion

BD combined with cryotherapy for the interventional treatment of CCAS might be superior to BD alone. PS-base image processing technology might be used as a supplement strategy for measuring the degree of central airway stenosis.
