Abstract
Background Sleep is a complex physiological function that should be addressed from different perspectives and consider the circadian rhythm. Sleep deprivation, either acute or chronic, negatively affects several functions, including motor control. Balance control is essential in several daily life activities and balance problems are related to falls. Research Question This review focuses on how sleep conditions impact balance control. Methods Systematic literature review according to PRISMA guidelines. Results The literature provided strong evidence that acute sleep deprivation impairs postural control. Chronic sleep deprivation as well as low sleep quality had similar effects, although there is a lower number of works addressing this issue. Furthermore, time awake worsens postural controls and it can be used to detect sleepiness and fatigue. The sleep deprivation showed a stronger negative effect on postural control when removing the visual information (eyes closed) than when reducing proprioceptive feedback (soft surface). There is scarce literature about the effects of chronotype, circadian patterns and chronic sleep deprivation, a frequent problem, on balance control; however they consistently indicate that there is an relationship between them. Most of the studies only consider one-night (acute) sleep deprivation without monitoring prior sleep conditions and the circadian rhythm phase of the participants. However, a few studies indicated that these factors must be considered. Significance These results suggest that the sleep conditions of a subject should be considered for several days prior to balance control tests. Therefore, we propose a revision of current postural measurement protocols to include sleep assessment, such as sleep quality questionnaires or actimetry, and to consider the circadian rhythm of the participants to plan the hour of the tests.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare physical activity, postural stability, and muscle strength in Saudi adolescents with normal and poor sleep quality. Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated 62 Saudi adolescents between December 2017 and April 2018 at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Participants were classified into 2 equal groups; one with normal sleep (NS) and the other with poor sleep (PS). TecnoBody balance system was used to measure postural stability, ActiGraph to assess physical activity, and hand dynamometer and pinch gauge to assess hand grip and key pinch strength respectively. Results: At low platform stability, PS group showed poorer postural stability indices than NS group either with eyes opened or closed (p less than 0.05). ActiGraph data revealed that the physical activity parameters including the total steps count, total activities count, activity rate, and the vigorous activity time were significantly lower in PS group (p less than 0.05). The PS group had significantly more total sedentary time than the NS group. Muscle strength parameters did not show any significant difference between groups (p greater than 0.05). Conclusion: Poor sleep significantly impaired postural stability and physical activity in Saudi adolescents. However, poor sleep had no effect on their isometric muscle strength.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder affecting virtually every organ. Sleep disturbances, associated to high collapsibility in upper airways, are common in MFS; daytime sleepiness could lead to reduction in attention and motor coordination, with detrimental effects on balance. OBJECTIVE To evaluate otoneurological function in MFS patients, compared to healthy subjects, and to investigate possible correlations with sleep deprivation extent. METHODS Forty-one MFS patients underwent a thorough otoneurological examination, video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), and static posturography. Sleep parameters were recorded by home monitoring. Daytime sleepiness and dizziness-related handicap were screened by means of Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Results were compared with 49 healthy controls (HC). RESULTS DHI and ESS scores were increased in MFS patients (p < 0,01). vHIT scores showed no between-group effect. Classical (surface and length) and frequency-domain posturographic parameters were significantly increased in MFS with respect to HC (p < 0,01). A positive correlation was found between ESS scores and posturographic parameters in MFS patients. CONCLUSIONS An impaired postural control, related to the extent of sleep deprivation, was found in MFS patients. Such results could advocate for screening and treating sleep deprivation and balance dysfunctions in MFS patients.

Abstract
This study examined the biopsychosocial measures related to postural control in the growing population of older adults (i.e., 60 years and older). The sample of the study consisted of 129 older adults (M = 74.45, SD = 6.95), with 34 males and 95 females; 36 were classified with chronic low-back pain (CLBP), and 93 without chronic low-back pain (NCLBP). Physical and psychosocial constructs were analyzed as predictors for postural control measures. Additionally, gender and classification of low-back pain were examined as moderators for all physical and psychosocial measures. Results demonstrated that physical and psychosocial measures were able to significantly predict composite, visual, and vestibular balance measures, but not somatosensory or preference balance measures. The chair-stand test, modified sit-and-reach test, sleep disturbance, and balance efficacy were all identified as individually significant predictors. Gender and CLBP did not moderate the utility of any predictor variables. Results of the current study re-confirm the importance of utilizing the biopsychosocial approach for future research examining postural control in older adults.

Abstract
A daily rest period (DRP; rest taken from daily work during a 24 h period), is essential to work recovery. This study examined DRPs' distribution and association with health outcomes among information technology workers recruited from an internet panel (N=1,811). Participants completed a web questionnaire examining psychological distress as a primary outcome, along with non-restorative sleep, fatigue (stress reaction), and work performance. Logistic regression analysis showed elevated psychological distress when DRP was <12 h (OR: 2.54; 95% CI: 1.47-4.42) and <11 h (OR: 2.48, 95% CI: 1.17-5.26), although the 95% CI included 1 after adjusting for age, sex, and working and commuting hours. After the above adjustment, similar associations were found with non-restorative sleep and fatigue, but not work performance, when DRP was <12 h. These findings constitute the first analysis of a dose-response relationship between DRP and subjective health outcomes among white-collar workers.

Abstract
The lack of sleep, both in quality and quantity, is an increasing problem in modern society, often related to workload and stress. A number of studies have addressed the effects of acute (total) sleep deprivation on postural control. However, up to date, the effects of chronic sleep deficits, either in quantity or quality, have not been analyzed. Thirty healthy adults participated in the study that consisted of registering activity with a wrist actigraph for more than a week before performing a series of postural control tests. Sleep and circadian rhythm variables were correlated and the sum of activity of the least active 5-h period, L5, a rhythm variable, obtained the greater coefficient value with sleep quality variables (wake after sleep onset WASO and efficiency sleep). Cluster analysis was performed to classify subjects into two groups based on L5 (low and high). The balance tests scores used to asses postural control were measured using Biodex Balance System and were compared between the two groups with different sleep quality. The postural tests were divided into dynamic (platform tilt with eyes open, closed and cursor) and static (clinical test of sensory integration). The results showed that during the tests with eyes closed, the group with worse sleep quality had also worse postural control performance. Lack of vision impairs postural balance more deeply in subjects with chronic sleep inefficiency. Chronic poor sleep quality impairs postural control similarly to total sleep deprivation.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of shift work on the psychomotor and postural performance of night workers. The study included 20 polysomnography technicians working schedule of 12-h night shift by 36-h off. On the first day of protocol, the body mass and height were measured, and an actigraph was placed on the wrist of each participant. On the second day of protocol, sleepiness by Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, postural control by force platform (30 seconds) and psychomotor performance by Psychomotor Vigilance Task (10 minutes) were measured before and after 12-h night work. Results showed that after 12-h night work, sleepiness increased by 59% (p<0.001), postural control variables increased by 9% (p = 0.048), and 14% (p = 0.006). Mean reaction time, and the number of lapses of attention increased by 13% (p = 0.006) and 425% (p = 0.015), respectively, but the mean reciprocal reaction time decreased by 7%. In addition, there were correlations between sleepiness and postural control variables with opened eyes (r = 0.616, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.361-0.815; r = 0.538; 95% CI = 0.280-0.748) and closed eyes (r = 0.557; 95% CI = 0.304-0.764, r = 0497; 95% CI = 0.325-0.715) and a pronounced effect of sleepiness on postural sway (R2 = 0.393; 95% CI = 0.001-0.03). Therefore, 12-h night work system and sleepiness showed a negative impact in postural and psychomotor vigilance performance of night workers. As unexpected, the force platform was feasibility to detect sleepiness in this population, underscoring the possibility of using this method in the workplace to prevent occupational injuries and accidents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether postural stability and adaptation differed after a normal night of sleep, after 24h (24 SDep) and 36h (36 SDep) of sleep deprivation while subjected to repeated balance perturbations. Also, to determine whether there was any correlation between subjective alertness scores and objective posturographic measurements. Lastly, to investigate the effects of vision on the stability during sleep deprivation. METHODS Body movements at five locations were recorded in 18 subjects (mean age 23.8years) using a 3D movement measurement system while subjected with eyes open and closed to vibratory proprioceptive calf stimulation after a normal night of sleep, 24 and 36 SDep. RESULTS The clearest sleep deprivation effect was reduced ability to adapt head, shoulder and hip movements, both with eyes open and eyes closed. Additionally, several near falls occurred after being subjected to balance perturbations for 2-3min while sleep deprived. Unexpectedly, postural performance did not continue to deteriorate between 24 and 36h of sleep deprivation, but showed some signs of improvement. Subjective scores of sleepiness correlated poorly with actual changes in postural control performance. CONCLUSIONS Sleep deprivation might affect postural stability through reduced adaptation ability and lapses in attention. Subjective alertness might not be an accurate indicator of the physiological effects of sleep deprivation. SIGNIFICANCE Sleep deprivation could increase the risk of accidents in attention demanding tasks. There is a need for objective evaluation methods to determine actual performance capacity during sleep deprivation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression and suicide-related behaviours are important issues for workers, and the number of Japanese companies contracting with the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to promote employees' mental health has recently increased. However, no longitudinal studies have reported that the EAP maintains or improves the overall level of depression among employees qualitatively. Thus, we attempted to assess the impact of the EAP on depression and suicide-related behaviours in the workplace. METHODS A cohort study was conducted on 283 male Japanese employees aged 22-38 years at a Japanese information-technology company introducing the EAP. Because the privacy policy of the EAP service made it difficult to perform a randomised design in the workplace, 22 men working at an affiliated company without the EAP were used as a reference group. All the subjects completed the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) consisting of job demands, control, and social support before the EAP was introduced to establish a baseline and after 2 years. RESULTS In the EAP group, the total HAM-D scores significantly decreased after the 2-year study period (P=0.0011); the changes in the scores of the five HAM-D items (i.e., suicidal thoughts, agitation, psychomotor retardation, guilt, and depressed mood) were significant. Specifically, 19 (86%) of the 22 workers with a positive response to the suicidal thoughts item (i.e., score >or= 1) at baseline reported that they no longer had suicidal thoughts (i.e., score=0) after the 2 year study period. No significant changes were observed in the reference group. The three JCQ scores were not significantly different between the baseline and after the 2 year study period in both groups. CONCLUSION Although further studies are needed, EAPs may be a promising strategy for maintaining the good mental health of workers.

Abstract
The paper summarizes research linking long work hours to a wide range of risks to workers, families, employers, and the community. The risks are theorized to stem from less time to recover from work, longer exposure to workplace hazards, and less time to attend to non-work responsibilities. Risks to workers include sleep deprivation, poor recovery from work, decrements in neuro-cognitive and physiological functioning, illnesses, adverse reproductive outcomes, and injuries. Risks to families include delayed marriages and child bearing, and obesity in children. Risks to employers include reduced productivity and increases in workers errors. Mistakes by fatigued workers have broad reaching impacts to the community: medical errors, automobile crashes with other drivers on the road, and industrial disasters that damage the environment.
