Crack initiation and growth in a special quasi-sandwich crossed-lamellar structure in Cymbiola nobilis seashell

Sandwich structure consisting of three crossed-lamellar layers (inner, middle and outer) is one of the most common structures found in mollusk shells, and is normally arranged in a 0°/90°/0° or 90°/0°/90° mode. However, the Cymbiola nobilis seashell in the present study is observed to exhibit a unique quasi-sandwich structure, where the inner and middle layers have an ~15° rotation in comparison with those of typical sandwich structures, resulting in a 15°/75°/0° or 75°/15°/90° mode. This has been identified as the weak/tough/weak and tough/weak/tough modes, and the sample arranged in the 15°/75°/0° mode with a tough layer in the middle has a higher strength than that arranged in the 75°/15°/90° mode with a weak layer in the middle. The fracture resistances of these two types of structural arrangements depend mainly on crack propagation. The interfaces between the macrolayers can effectively arrest the crack propagation especially when the tough layer is positioned in the middle (15°/75°/0° mode), hence increasing the strength and toughness of materials. Salient toughening mechanisms involving crack deflection together with zig-zag crack propagation paths as well as the fiber pull-out of second-order lamellae are identified. Moreover, triangular fracture paths with a convex morphology are observed to form due to the concurrent occurrence of fiber fracturing and channel cracking in single 1st-order lamellae. These findings shed light on the superb crack propagation resistance of the unique quasi-sandwich structure in the C. nobilis shell, thus paving the way for the development of bio-inspired advanced structural materials.

Mechanical Properties of Biological Nanocomposite Nacre: Multiscale Modeling and Experiments on Nacre from Red Abalone

Nacre, the inner iridescent layer of mollusks shell is a bio-nanocomposite with the mineral aragonite as a major constituent and 2-5% of organics mainly in the form of proteins. Our multiscale modeling and experimental studies reveal that the microstructure and the small weight percent of organics are the key parameters attributed to the extreme toughness of nacre. We report that the presence of platelet interlocks nacre have a significant role in the enhancement of mechanical properties. Molecular simulation study is conducted to understand the behavior of aragonite-organic interface. The mechanical behavior of organics and inorganics in presence of each other is described using steered molecular dynamics simulations. This provides some understanding on the deformation mechanisms of the protein present between the aragonite layers. Our nanoindentation results indicate that the elastic modulus and hardness of nacre decreases as it is exposed to a denaturing temperature for proteins. The changes in the organic inorganic interaction have been experimentally described using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. This work gives insight into the contribution of the various factors existing at different length scales on the overall mechanical behavior of nacre.

Structure and mechanical properties of selected biological materials

Mineralized biological tissues offer insight into how nature has evolved these components to optimize multifunctional purposes. These mineral constituents are weak by themselves, but interact with the organic matrix to produce materials with unexpected mechanical properties. The hierarchical structure of these materials is at the crux of this enhancement. Microstructural features such as organized, layered organic/inorganic structures and the presence of porous and fibrous elements are common in many biological components. The organic and inorganic portions interact at the molecular and micro-levels synergistically to enhance the mechanical function. In this paper, we report on recent progress on studies of the abalone and Araguaia river clam shells, arthropod exoskeletons, antlers, tusks, teeth and bird beaks.

Photoacoustic FTIR spectroscopic study of undisturbed nacre from red abalone

In this work, photoacoustic Fourier transform infrared (PA-FTIR) spectroscopy has been utilized to study interfacial interactions of undisturbed nacre and nacre powder from red abalone shell. The spectra of both undisturbed nacre and nacre powder showed characteristic bands of aragonite and proteins. Although nacre powder and undisturbed nacre are chemically identical, PA-FTIR spectrum of undisturbed nacre is found to be significantly different from that of nacre powder. A broad and strong band is observed at around 1485 cm(-1) in nacre powder. The intensity of this band is notably reduced in undisturbed nacre. This result is explained on the basis of interfacial interactions between aragonite platelets and acidic proteins. It is also observed that band at around 1788 cm(-1) originates from three overlapping bands 1797, 1787 and 1778 cm(-1). The band at around 1787 cm(-1) is assigned to CO stretching of carboxylate groups of acidic proteins. The other two bands at 1797 and 1778 cm(-1), originate from aragonite and have been assigned to combination bands, nu(3)+nu(4a) and nu(3)+nu(4b), respectively. For the study of stratification in undisturbed nacre, PA-FTIR spectra have been collected in step scan mode. The variation in spectra with depth can be attributed to changes in conformation of proteins as well as interfacial interactions.
