The effect of hip abductor exercise on muscle strength and trunk stability after an injury of the lower extremities

Impact of lower limb alignment abnormality (physiologic knee valgus) on the functional recovery outcome of athletes with meniscal injuries

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the impact of lower limb alignment abnormalities, specifically physiological knee valgus, on the functional recovery outcomes of athletes with meniscal injuries. It also examined the factors influencing these abnormalities to provide scientific evidence for treatment and rehabilitation of related sports injuries.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective study of 118 athletes from Guizhou Normal University, who were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of lower limb alignment abnormalities. The Simple group comprised athletes with isolated meniscal injuries, while the Combined group included athletes with meniscal injuries and concurrent lower limb alignment abnormalities. We assessed the functional status of both groups and analyzed factors influencing lower limb alignment abnormalities.

RESULTS

Of the 118 athletes, 46 (38.98%) exhibited lower limb alignment abnormalities, and 72 (61.02%) did not. No significant differences in general characteristics were found between the groups (all P > 0.05). The Combined group displayed higher Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores and Functional Performance Test (FPT) results (coordinated contraction, shuttle run, CarioCa) compared to the Simple group (P < 0.05). Conversely, joint range of motion (ROM), knee muscle strength (flexors), and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores were lower in the Combined group (all P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified active ROM < 105.32°, passive ROM < 101.66°, and knee muscle strength (flexors) < 84.41 N as risk factors for lower limb alignment abnormalities (P < 0.05), while FPT acted as a protective factor (P < 0.05). The combined testing model demonstrated higher predictive efficacy (AUC = 0.903, 95% CI: 0.852-0.955, P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Lower limb alignment abnormalities significantly affect the functional recovery outcomes of athletes with meniscal injuries. Factors such as ROM, knee muscle strength, and IKDC score may pose risks for these abnormalities, whereas FPT can provide protective benefits. Timely detection and correction of lower limb alignment abnormalities during the rehabilitation process from meniscal injuries are crucial to enhance recovery and improve prognosis.

INFLUENCE OF SPORTS INJURIES AND RESISTANCE TRAINING ON SKIERS’ BONE MASS

ABSTRACT Introduction: With the preparation and development of the Winter Olympic Games, there has been an increase in the popularity of skiing. Driven by this demand, the professional development of coaches requires updates in the analysis of skiers’ sports injuries, elaboration of corresponding prevention and treatment strategies, and resistance training to promote the development of athletes’ physical quality, such as bone mass and mineral density. Objective: Study the sports injuries of skiers and explore needs and ways of applying resistance training in skiing. Methods: The questionnaire survey was used to explore the main types of injuries and their influencing factors. Then, 20 volunteers were selected for the resistance training experiment; each group of 10 people included five men and five women. The control group maintained a normal daily life, while resistance training was added to the experimental group three times a week, based on the control group. Results: The research results showed that the current proportion of skiing injuries was relatively high, mainly in mild injuries. After nine weeks in the experimental resistance training group, both men and women had positive bone mass development. Conclusion: Resistance training can improve physical quality and reduce the occurrence of sports injuries, demonstrating the benefits of its implementation in endurance training for skiers. Computer-Assisted Quantitative Analysis of Skeletal Muscles of Snowboarding Parallel Giant Slalom Athletes after Exercise Based on Artificial Intelligence and Complex Networks

The snowboarding project has the characteristics of high risk and high technical level. The current publicity level is not high, and the number of participants is also very limited. Another potential advantage medal breakthrough project that is expected to be achieved in the Winter Olympics has received a lot of attention, creating favorable opportunities for the promotion and development of this project in China. The event requires good special physical support, skeletal muscle contraction is the body to produce motor function, and special physical training and recovery are key factors for athletes to obtain excellent results in the competition. This article is aimed at performing ultrasonic quantitative analysis on the skeletal muscles of skiers after exercise based on artificial intelligence and complex networks and at studying the skeletal muscle conditions of snowboarders after exercise, so as to provide a certain theoretical basis for coaches in future scientific training. Based on a large amount of literature, this paper uses variational optical flow calculation and split Bregman method to solve the typical HS model, L1-L2 model, and L1-high-order model, respectively, and uses the motion estimation method to describe the movement of muscles. An experiment was designed to collect ultrasound images of the gastrocnemius and quadriceps muscles during contraction. In addition, a motion target positioning algorithm was used to obtain some motion parameters, which provided direct help for athletes in rationally arranging training load and scientific training. The experimental results in this paper show that the muscle motion features extracted from the ultrasound sequence images can quantitatively express a lot of important information about the skeletal muscle motion form and function and have potential practical application value. And the different invariants of each type of ski trajectory vary greatly, floating between 1.5429 and 7.6759.

NEUROMUSCULAR INJURY METHOD IN DIFFERENT STRENGTH SPORTS DAMAGE

ABSTRACT Introduction: Sports muscle injury is a common phenomenon in sports, and most of it is caused by intense exercise done for a long time. Objective: The effect of high intensity mode (HI) speed endurance training on the muscle injury of athletes. Methods: 14 sprinters were recruited; the muscle injury indexes of the subjects were tested 15 min before and 24 h, 48 h and 72 h after speed endurance training in HV mode and HI mode (high volume mode and high intensity mode, respectively). Results: The results of this study showed that both high amount and HI mode speed endurance training caused a certain degree of injury to the subjects’ muscles, but the injury caused by HI mode speed endurance training to the muscles was more serious than that caused by high amount (P < 0.05). Conclusions: HI mode speed endurance training causes a certain degree of injury to the subjects’ muscle, but it causes more serious injury than high volume mode speed endurance training. Effectiveness of Abdominal and Gluteus Medius Training in Lumbo-Pelvic Stability and Adductor Strength in Female Soccer Players. A Randomized Controlled Study

BACKGROUND

Abdominal and lumbo-pelvic stability alterations may be the origin of lower limb injuries, such as adductor pathology in soccer players. Imbalance can be caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

METHODS

In this randomized controlled trial over 8 weeks, 25 female footballers were randomly allocated to an experimental group (isometric abdominal training and gluteus medius-specific training) or a control group (isometric abdominal training). Evaluations were performed at baseline, at the end of the intervention and after a 4-week follow-up period. The exercise protocol in common for both groups included three exercises: Plank, Lateral plank and Bird dog. Specific exercises for the gluteus medius were: Pelvic drop and Stabilization of the gluteus medius in knee valgus. Outcome measures were lumbar-pelvic stability and adductor strength.

RESULTS

After the intervention, there was an increase in lumbo-pelvic stability in both groups, being greater in the control group than in the experimental group (mean differences [MD]: 4.84 vs. MD: 9.58; p < 0.01) with differences in the analysis of repeated measures (p < 0.001), but not in group interaction (p = 0.26). Changes were found in adductor strength in the experimental group (MD: -2.48; p < 0.001 in the left adductor; MD: -1.48; p < 0.01 in right adductor) and control group (MD: -1.68; p < 0.001 in the left adductor; MD: -2.05; p < 0.001 in the right adductor) after the intervention, with differences in the analysis of repeated measures in left (p < 0.001) and right (p < 0.001) adductor strength.

CONCLUSIONS

An abdominal and gluteal training protocol shows no advantage over a protocol of abdominal training alone for lumbo-pelvic stability and adductor strength, while improvements in both variables are maintained at four weeks follow-up.

Influence of Hip Abductor Strength on Functional Outcomes Before and After Total Knee Arthroplasty: Post Hoc Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is associated with declines in hip abductor (HA) muscle strength; however, a longitudinal analysis demonstrating the influence of TKA on trajectories of HA strength change has not been conducted.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in HA strength from pre-TKA through 3 months post-TKA and to characterize the relationship between HA strength changes and physical performance.

DESIGN

This study is a post hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

METHODS

Data from 162 participants (89 women, mean age = 63 y) were used for analysis. Data were collected by masked assessors preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months following surgery. Outcomes included: Timed "Up and Go" test (TUG), Stair Climbing Test (SCT), Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), and walking speed. Paired t tests were used for between- and within-limb comparisons of HA strength. Multivariable regression was used to determine contributions of independent variables, HA and knee extensor strength, to the dependent variables of TUG, SCT, 6MWT, and walking speed at each time point.

RESULTS

Hip abductor strength was significantly lower in the surgical limb pre-TKA (mean = 0.015; 95% CI = 0.010-0.020), 1 month post-TKA (0.028; 0.023-0.034), and 3 months post-TKA (0.02; 0.014-0.025) compared with the nonsurgical limb. Hip abductor strength declined from pre-TKA to 1 month post-TKA (18%), but not at the 3-month time point (0%). Hip abductor strength independently contributed to performance-based outcomes pre-TKA; however, this contribution was not observed post-TKA.

LIMITATIONS

The post hoc analysis prevents examining all outcomes likely to be influenced by HA strength.

CONCLUSIONS

Surgical limb HA strength is impaired prior to TKA, and worsens following surgery. Furthermore, HA strength contributes to performance-based outcomes, supporting the hypothesis that HA strength influences functional recovery.
