Teaching-learning tendencies and strategies used in the leadership development of nurses

Active learning methodology, associated to formative assessment, improved cardiac physiology knowledge and decreased pre-test stress and anxiety

Stress and anxiety caused by assessments are often related to the student's insecurity regarding the knowledge to be evaluated, while teaching strategies that increase effective learning can assist in reducing it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the use of an active methodology, associated to formative assessment, could reduce students' anxiety and stress, when compared to the traditional method, by promoting greater learning. New students enrolled in the same discipline of a Dentistry course were invited to participate in the study and were divided into two groups: traditional method and active methodology. The traditional method group received two lectures, delivered orally. The active methodology group received a lecture about cardiac cells and the autonomic control of cardiac function, with home study of the cardiac cycle using a textbook. In the second class, an individual formative assessment was applied. Afterwards, a group activity was performed with an educational game about the cardiac cycle, followed by a group formative assessment. After applying the traditional or active methodology, test 1 was carried out. Immediately before this test, saliva samples were collected for determination of the concentrations of the stress biomarkers cortisol and α-amylase. The students also answered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory questionnaire, used for anxiety level determination. The score obtained in the test 1 was significantly higher for the active methodology group, compared to the traditional method group. No significant differences between the groups were observed for baseline cortisol and salivary α-amylase concentrations, or for anxiety scores. Before test 1, traditional method group presented higher concentrations of salivary cortisol and α-amylase, compared to the respective baseline values, while the active methodology group showed no difference between the baseline and test 1 levels. Before test 1, there were increases in anxiety levels, relative to the respective baseline values, regardless of the teaching methodology used, but this increase was greater for the traditional method group, compared to the active methodology group. These results showed that the active methodology, associated to formative assessment, decreased test stress and anxiety, with improved student performance in comparison to traditional lectures.

Supervised Internship: attributions and limitations from the perspective of nursing supervisors, faculty advisor and managers

ABSTRACT Objectives: to describe the attributions and limitations in internship nursing supervisors’, faculty advisors’ and managers’ work in the process of carrying out Supervised Internship in nursing education. Methods: a qualitative exploratory-descriptive research. Interviews were conducted between February and July 2018 with 26 participants: four managers, nine faculty advisors, six primary care nursing supervisors and seven hospital care nursing supervisors. Data analysis was performed using the Content Analysis technique. Results: among the main attributions are participation in the organization of the field, mediation between educational and health institutions, presentation of the world of work; as limitations are the high number of institutions in the field, work overload, lack of commitment or lack of didactic preparation towards student education. Final Considerations: we evidenced the need to (re)define and clarify everyone’s roles and (re)think the integration strategies for monitoring students.

Theoretical-practical articulation of the continuous learning of leadership in Nursing in light of Peter Senge

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the theoretical-practical articulation of the continuous learning of leadership in undergraduate Nursing.

METHODS

Case study carried out at a Northeast federal public university. For data collection, semi-structured interview techniques, workshops, and document analysis were applied. Forty Nursing students participated in the interviews, and 26 in the workshops. The data were submitted to Minayo's operative analysis using the Nvivo software. Peter Senge's concepts were adopted.

RESULTS

The students demonstrated a greater understanding of the theme throughout the course and recognized contributing elements to the continuous learning of leadership, such as behavioral characteristics and the use of methodological approaches integrated with theoretical and practical spaces.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

The teaching of leadership is relevant in Nursing education, and this has been recognized by students, but still requires changes for it to become operational, with an improvement and a theoretical-practical integration of the cultivated experiences, suitable to the reality of the craft.

Fragilities and potentialities in the training of nurse leaders

OBJECTIVE

To know the perception of nursing professors about the fragilities and potentialities in the training of nurse leaders.

METHOD

Multiple case study, with a qualitative approach, performed with 36 nursing professors from a public university in the State of Bahia, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, interpreted in the light of Paulo Freire's theoretical framework and analyzed according to Thematic Analysis and the Nvivo®11 software.

RESULTS

Were highlighted as fragilities the need to improve the transversality of leadership throughout graduation and teaching focused on the banking model. The potentialities refer to the insertion of the students in the practice scenarios, enabling the approximation with the nursing and multidisciplinary teams, the use of active methodologies and participation in research groups.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

Professors consider the importance of problematizing pedagogical practices and invest in methodological strategies capable of promoting the training of nurse leaders.

Methodological approaches that facilitate the constant learning in nursing leadership

ABSTRACT Objective: To know the methodological approaches that facilitate the constant learning of leadership by undergraduate nursing students. Method: Qualitative research, of case study type, carried out with 26 nursing students from a federal public university in the Northeast Region. For the collection, the workshop technique was applied in July and December 2017, with two different groups. Analyzed with the support of content analysis and Nvivo®11 software. Interpreted with the theoretical contribution of Peter Senge. Results: They listed two codes, understood as, essential to the formation of leaders, emerging the categories: Adoption of a leadership style; Qualities and attributes of the leader; Methodological approaches that facilitate the constant learning of leadership. Final considerations: It was identified that the application of teaching techniques and strategies, brings students closer to the performance scenarios. It is necessary to offer more stimuli during training since there are shortages in teaching for the development of leadership.

Effectiveness of simulation in teaching immunization in nursing: a randomized clinical trial

Objective:

to evaluate the effectiveness of the clinical simulation on the cognitive performance of nursing students in adult immunization scenarios in the context of Primary Health Care.

Method:

a controlled and randomized pre-test and post-test clinical trial applied to random intervention and control groups. 34 undergraduate nursing students were selected and divided into two groups: classes with active participation of students and skills training (control); and classes with active participation of students, skills training, and clinical simulation (intervention).

Results:

the students in the intervention group performed better than those in the control group in the four assessments of cognitive performance, with statistical significance in the assessments of immediate (p=0.031) and late (1-20 days) (p=0.031) knowledge.

Conclusion:

from the simulation, students learn more in the short and medium terms. The information learned is retained for longer and the students are better prepared for the professional practice. Universal Trial Number: u1111-1195-2580

Leadership in the perspective of Family Health Strategy nurses

OBJECTIVE

To understand the perception of leadership in the work process and to promote its discussion within the Family Health Strategy scope.

METHOD

A qualitative approach research, guided by the action-research referential, conducted with 15 Familiy Health Strategy nurses in the inland of the state of São Paulo. Data was collected in 2015 in two interdependent phases, interviews and intervention-action, and processed according to the methodological framework of content analysis and the theoretical framework on nursing management.

RESULTS

The nurses showed their conceptions of leadership and the inherent challenges of practice: leadership training, overlapping care and management, and management charges. In the discussion of common problems and peer learning, a conception of transformational leadership was constructed.

CONCLUSIONS

The common and behavioral styles of leadership influenced on the conception of leadership and mobilized the attitudes of the nurses in the work process; however, there is a need for more engagement in the training/qualification of the professionals and the services about leadership.
