A cinenurducation activity using Call the Midwife to teach about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia: design, implementation, and assessment

BACKGROUND

Nursing students need to learn about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Cinenureducation is a rigorous method that uses materials from commercial movies or television series to teach health sciences students.

OBJECTIVES

Using content analysis of the television series Call the Midwife, design a cinenureducation activity teaching nursing students about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Evaluate its effectiveness in knowledge acquisition. DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND PRE-POST ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE GAIN FOR TEACHING ACTIVITIES: The study comprised three main steps: designing the teaching activity, implementing it, and analyzing its pedagogical effectiveness through a pre-and-post study to assess knowledge acquisition resulting from the teaching activity.

PARTICIPANTS

A six-member panel assessed the suitability of materials for the teaching goals. All second-year undergraduate nursing students in the course "Nursing management and leadership" at a nursing school in the 2022-2023 academic year were invited to participate (N = 160).

METHODS

The panel conducted a content analysis of the first two seasons of the series to determine the usefulness of each episode for teaching the chosen topics. Students were randomly assigned to groups watching episodes emphasizing either sexually transmitted infections or preeclampsia, followed by discussion. Learning was gauged through a pre-post viewing 20-question multiple-choice test. Additionally, students' satisfaction was evaluated.

RESULTS

A total of 142 nursing students participated. Significant differences between mean scores before and after intervention were found [6.90 vs. 6.42 on the preintervention assessment, p < 0.05; mean gain, 0.49 (95 % CI: 0.22-0.76)]. Most students were satisfied with the activity.

CONCLUSIONS

The activity was useful for teaching about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. The use of a television series portraying nurses enables the exploration of these critical topics. This has potential implications for integrating similar methods into nurse education curricula, emphasizing the broader impact of the research on pedagogical practices in healthcare education.

Universitários e o Uso do Preservativo como Método de Prevenção das Infecções Sexualmente Transmissíveis

Introdução: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o conhecimento, a atitude e a prática dos universitários da área da saúde que já tiveram relações sexuais, sobre o uso do preservativo como método de prevenção das infecções sexualmente transmissíveis (IST). Metodologia: Estudo descritivo do tipo inquérito sobre Conhecimento, Atitude e Prática, com delineamento transversal e abordagem quantitativa. Foi executada em formato on-line, cujas informações foram obtidas por meio da aplicação de um questionário durante o período de setembro a dezembro de 2021. A análise de dados foi realizada por meio dos softwares JASP 0.9.1.0 e BioEstat 5.0. Resultados: Dos 162 participantes, 64.8% possuíam conhecimento adequado; 52.5%, atitude adequada; e 98.1%, prática inadequada em relação à prevenção. O conhecimento esteve associado com a religião (p=0.015), frequência de realização de testes rápidos (p=0.016) e diagnóstico prévio de IST (p=0.029); a atitude esteve associada com a renda familiar (p=0.027), procedência (p=0.017) e sexo (p=0.000); houve associação da prática com o relacionamento (p=0.040). Discussão: O acesso apropriado a meios de prevenção e de informações favorece melhores atitudes e práticas em relação ao uso dos preservativos. Conclusão: Os universitários podem estar vulneráveis às IST, sendo importante ações educativas voltadas à adesão do preservativo.

SOCIAL INTERACTION OF WOMEN EXPOSED TO HIV/AIDS: A REPRESENTATIVE MODEL

ABSTRACT Objective: to present the representative model of the social interaction of women exposed to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and AIDS based on the meanings attributed by them. Method: an interpretative and qualitative research study carried out in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2017 to 2018, through semi-structured interviews with 17 women who made up four sample groups, in the period between June 2017 and January 2018. The framework for data analysis is the Grounded Theory and Symbolic Interactionism, and the study was ethically approved as required by the National Health Council. Results: for women, the representative model of the social interaction process of exposure to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and AIDS means “not protecting themselves” and “not being protected by the other”. It is seen as a sloppy, irresponsible and reckless act. The women know the measures to prevent exposure; however, they do not use condoms and acknowledge that they are both exposed and exposing others simultaneously. The central category entitled “Neglecting one's own life although being aware of exposure to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and AIDS” stands out. Conclusion: understanding this social interaction can contribute to the apprehension of the main factors that influence the construction of these meanings by women, thus helping them to give a new meaning to this exposure and allowing them to modify their actions to protect themselves and others against AIDS. Consequently, effective assistance based on preservation of life is encouraged, with a view to comprehensive care to women and reducing their exposure to infection.

Experiences of Motherhood in University Students in Brazil: A Qualitative Study

Introduction:

The women’s rise to higher education contrasts with the phenomenon of motherhood, since it instigates changes in various contexts, whether physiological or emotional, and directly affects the way of life and routine of those women, resulting in a constant conflict between motherhood and academic career. In this sense, the student has to restructure responsibilities and behaviors, as well as requires family support and laws that support her in this period.

Objectives:

To describe the experiences of motherhood in university students, and to identify the strategies developed by university students to adapt motherhood with academic routine.

Methods:

This is a descriptive, exploratory and qualitative research carried out in a private University Center in Brazil. The participants were ten Nursing undergraduate students, regularly enrolled and who experienced motherhood during the academic term. Data were collected during August and September 2019, through a recorded interview using a semi-structured form. For the treatment and analysis of the data, the Collective Subject Discourse was used. The study followed the ethical precepts and was approved by the ethics committee (opinion n. 3.419.572).

Results:

The participants’ discourses gave rise to four central ideas: Feelings experienced from the discovery of pregnancy; The discovery of pregnancy and the decision to continue the course; Support relationships as a decisive factor for the non-abandonment of the course and Strategies to reconcile motherhood with academic routine. The main key expressions identified in the discourses were: joy, fear, insecurity, anguish, concern, distress, anger, sadness, interrupting, giving up, taking time off from the course, not taking time off from the course, family support, support from friends, support from the institution, adjusting schedules, studying while my child sleeps, family help, taking the baby to college, storing milk while breastfeeding.

Conclusion:

The analysis of the discourses revealed that the experience of motherhood in the university sphere is marked by a combination of different feelings, and by an important process of adaptations to the new moment, since there is a reflection and indecision about the continuity of the academic trajectory. The reports also highlight the importance of family, institutional and friend support, such as a support network of incentive to the care with the child, as well as the use of strategies to reconcile academic routine with motherhood.
