Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on optical, colorimetric, and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens (n = 5, IPS e.max CAD) were randomly allocated to the following treatments: mirror-polished: SiC papers; as-cut: mimicking CAD-CAM milling; ground: 90-120 μm-grit diamond bur; ground polished: ground, finished (46-30 μm-grit diamond bur), polished (diamond cups, brush and diamond paste); ground glazed: ground, glazed; ground polished glazed: association of methods. CIELAB color coordinates were obtained by a spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 color differences (ΔE00 ) and the translucency parameter (TP00 ) were calculated. Light transmittance was assessed with a colorimeter. Surface characteristics (topography and roughness) were analyzed. Statistical differences for each condition and outcome were detected using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS TP00 data show statistical reduction after grinding (p < 0.05), which was only restored with polishing (solely or with glazing). ΔE00 shows that grinding results in perceptible variations in color (above 0.81), which were restored after all post-processing protocols (exception to only glaze application in contact with a black background). Light transmittance data corroborated such performance. Polishing and glazing reduced roughness and improved surface topography. CONCLUSION Grinding statistically increased roughness, reduced translucency, light transmittance through the ceramic, and resulted on color differences. On contrary, polishing (followed or not by glazing) reduced roughness and enhanced ceramic translucency and light transmittance. Glaze also reduced roughness, but it still presented reduced translucency. The positioning (facing up or down) of the ceramic treated surface influenced the considered outcomes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Grinding with diamond burs results in a deleterious impact to the optical, colorimetric and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate ceramic. Thus, polishing (followed or not by glazing) is recommended for optical and topographical enhancements when lithium disilicate monolithic restorations require occlusal adjustments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to identify the relative strengths and weaknesses of different interfaces within the multilayer structure of a zirconia crown restoration when applying different surface pretreatments. These include the influence on shear strengths of different air abrasion protocols, glaze-on techniques, zirconia primers and self-adhesive cements for either the complex structure: zirconia / self adhesive resin composite cement (RCC) / bovine dentin substrate (part 1) or the RCC / zirconia substrate (part 2). METHODS In Part 1, zirconia discs, pretreated by either glaze-on techniques or air abrasion using Rocatec™ Soft, were bonded to bovine dentin substrates with different self-adhesive RCCs. In Part 2, steel-cylinders were bonded to zirconia cuboid substrates, pretreated by either different protocols for air-abrasion or a glaze-on-technique, with different self-adhesive RCCs. Shear bond strengths (SBS) were measured for all interfacial combinations. RESULTS In part 1, application of air abrasion using Rocatec™ Soft significantly increased the SBS of zirconia to dentin compared to control specimens without pretreatment, while glaze-on techniques did not increase the SBS. Pretreatment of zirconia surfaces with two primers (either Clearfil Ceramic Primer, or Monobond S) showed significantly higher SBS than the controls. Cementations with RelyX Unicem 2 Automix showed significantly higher SBS than with MaxCem Elite. In Part 2, all air abrasion protocols increased the SBS, but there was no significant difference between these protocols. Again the glaze-on technique did not increase SBS. A significant difference between the two RCCs was again observed. When zirconia substrates were air abraded, regardless of which protocol was applied, the highest SBS were obtained by Calibra with P&B active followed by Panavia with or without Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus. Calibra applied without P&B active exhibited the lowest SBS. SIGNIFICANCE Pretreatment of zirconia substrates using air abrasion and/or ceramic primers increased the SBS of the zirconia cement interface. For all tested glaze-on treatments, in our experimental setting no effect was observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of extrinsic pigmentation on the biaxial flexural strength and surface topographic of translucent Y-TZP (InCoris TZI - Sirona - USA) subjected to several surface treatments. METHODS Sintered zirconia discs-shaped specimens (n=120) (ø:12mm; thickness:1.2mm; ISO 6872) were prepared and divided (n=15) according to various factors: "extrinsic pigmentation" (n: without; p: with) and "surface treatments" (C: control - as sintered; A: abraded with silica-coated alumina particles (30μm); G: glazed with a thin film of low-fusing porcelain glaze; GH: glazed and etched with 10% hydrofluoridric acid for 60s. Mechanical cycling (1.2×106 cycles, 200N, 3.8Hz) and flexural strength test (1mm/min - 1000kg cell) were performed. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's were used for statistical test (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was used to evaluate the strength reliability. Samples were analyzed via (1) an optical profilometer to determine the surface roughness (Ra); (2) an X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate phase transformations; and (3) a SEM equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to elucidate morphological properties and chemical compositions. RESULTS Regardless of the surface treatment (p=0.5459) (Cn: 560.16MPa; Gn: 573.36MPa; An: 643.51MPa; GHn: 542.94MPa; Cp: 628.04MPa; Gp: 641.90MPa; Ap: 554.47MPa; GHp :602.84MPa) and extrinsic pigmentation (p=0.1280) there was no difference in the flexural strength among the experimental groups. According to the XRD analysis, phase transformations occurred in the An group (t→m) and in Ap group (t→c). Surface roughness was affected by surface treatments (An - p=0.001) and extrinsic pigmentation (Gp - p=0.001). SIGNIFICANCE The biaxial flexural strength of the tested samples was not affected neither by surface treatments nor by pigmentation, although it can cause phase transformation and promote surface roughness.

Abstract
This study evaluated and compared the effects of two glaze application methods (brush and spray) on the fatigue strength and surface characteristics (topography and roughness) of a translucent yttrium stabilized partially tetragonal zirconia polycrystal ceramic (Y-TZP) prior to and after grinding. Disc-shaped specimens of translucent Y-TZP (Vita YZ-HT; Vita-Zahnfabrik) were processed (ISO 6872-2015) and randomly allocated into 6 groups, according to the surface treatments performed on the tensile surface: Ctrl - as-sintered (no treatment); Gr - grinding with a diamond bur (181 μm-grit; #3101G); Br - glaze obtained from a powder-liquid mix and applied by brush (Vita Akzent; Vita Zahnfabrik); Sp - glaze application via spray (Vita Akzent Plus; Vita Zahnfabrik); Gr + Br and Gr + Sp - association of grinding + respective glaze method. Analyses of surface roughness (Ra and Rz), fatigue strength (staircase method), surface topography and fractography were carried out. The as-sintered condition had the smoothest surface, while grinding led to the rougher and more heterogeneous topography. Both glaze application methods showed a potential for topography evenness (smoothening effect), while the glaze spray method led to thinner layers of material, showing a limitation in reducing the roughness compared to the brush method. No deleterious effect on fatigue strength of the Y-TZP could be observed, as the glaze-spray application on the as-sintered surface showed the highest values. Fractography depicted two distinct fracture origin regions: from defects in the surface/sub-surface region for the Ctrl and Gr groups; and at the zirconia-glaze layer interface for Br, Sp, Gr + Br and Gr + Sp. The clinical relevance of this work is that the tested glaze application methods did not damage the fatigue strength of the tested Y-TZP.

Abstract
Background The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of dental substrate simulator material, and the presence of root and periodontal ligament on the stress distribution in an adhesively-cemented monolithic crown. Material and Methods Five (5) 3D models according to the substrate simulator material and shape were modeled with CAD software for conducting non-linear finite element analysis (FEA): Tooth with and without periodontal ligament - subgroup "pl" (groups Tooth+pl and Tooth-pl), machined tooth in epoxy-resin with and without pulp chamber - subgroup "pc" (ER+pc and ER-pc) and simplified epoxy-resin substrate without pulp chamber and roots (SiER). Next, adhesively-cemented monolithic crowns in zirconia reinforced lithium silicate were modeled over each substrate. The solids were then imported in STEP format to the analysis software and the contact between teeth and cylinder was considered perfectly bonded; whereas, the contacts involving the resin cement were considered as non-separated. The materials were considered isotropic, linearly elastic, and homogeneous. An axial load (600 N) was applied to the occlusal surface and results of maximum principal stress (MPa) on the restoration were required. Results FEA revealed that all evaluated subtracts showed the crown intaglio surface as the most stressed region. The average stress and stress peaks were similar for restorations cemented onto Tooth+pl, Tooth-pl and ER+pc substrates, but, 13% higher in comparison to ER-pc and SiER substrates. Conclusions Simplified substrates can be used to evaluate posterior full crown behavior without periodontal ligaments and roots, since the rigidity of the specimen is taken into account.
