How to Develop an Online Video for Teaching Health Procedural Skills: Tutorial for Health Educators New to Video Production

BACKGROUND

Clinician educators are experts in procedural skills that students need to learn. Some clinician educators are interested in creating their own procedural videos but are typically not experts in video production, and there is limited information on this topic in the clinical education literature. Therefore, we present a tutorial for clinician educators to develop a procedural video.

OBJECTIVE

We describe the steps needed to develop a medical procedural video from the perspective of a clinician educator new to creating videos, informed by best practices as evidenced by the literature. We also produce a checklist of elements that ensure a quality video. Finally, we identify the barriers and facilitators to making such a video.

METHODS

We used the example of processing a piece of skeletal muscle in a pathology laboratory to make a video. We developed the video by dividing it into 3 phases: preproduction, production, and postproduction. After writing the learning outcomes, we created a storyboard and script, which were validated by subject matter and audiovisual experts. Photos and videos were captured on a digital camera mounted on a monopod. Video editing software was used to sequence the video clips and photos, insert text and audio narration, and generate closed captions. The finished video was uploaded to YouTube (Google) and then inserted into open-source authoring software to enable an interactive quiz.

RESULTS

The final video was 4 minutes and 4 seconds long and took 70 hours to create. The final video included audio narration, closed captioning, bookmarks, and an interactive quiz. We identified that an effective video has six key factors: (1) clear learning outcomes, (2) being engaging, (3) being learner-centric, (4) incorporating principles of multimedia learning, (5) incorporating adult learning theories, and (6) being of high audiovisual quality. To ensure educational quality, we developed a checklist of elements that educators can use to develop a video. One of the barriers to creating procedural videos for a clinician educator who is new to making videos is the significant time commitment to build videography and editing skills. The facilitators for developing an online video include creating a community of practice and repeated skill-building rehearsals using simulations.

CONCLUSIONS

We outlined the steps in procedural video production and developed a checklist of quality elements. These steps and the checklist can guide a clinician educator in creating a quality video while recognizing the time, technical, and cognitive requirements.

Profile of scientific production on nursing technology construction, validity and application: a bibliometric study

OBJECTIVE

to analyze the profile of scientific production on nursing technology construction, validity and application.

METHODS

this is a bibliometric study, carried out in six databases, based on the Methodi Ordinatio application, arranged in nine stages. To represent the findings, the VOSviewer® software was used.

RESULTS

346 studies were identified, obtained from BDENF, CINAHL, EMBASE, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science. There was a predominance of the English language, and 20% of the authors hold more than 25% of studies. Only two journals account for 25% of studies in the period studied. Twenty-six studies were selected for the InOrdinatio classification. Nursing Process (23%) stood out among the studies. The most produced technology was software (27%), and 50% of works describe construction and validity.

CONCLUSIONS

there is an emphasis on the creation of educational technologies, especially information technology. The data demonstrates opportunities for future research in the area.

[Digital educational materials on culinary skills as a health promotion strategy in Primary Health Care]

This study aims to report on the development and validation of digital educational materials based on the dimensions of home cooking skills (HCS) assessed on a scale destined for PHC professionals, following the recommendations of The Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population and on The Food and Nutrition Education Framework (FNE) for Public Policies. Five videos and graphic materials were developed with proposals for activities to develop HCS and encourage its implementation in actions and guidelines in the community and in professional care. The content of the materials was evaluated by experts using the Two-Round Delphi-based technique and statistical analyses for evidence of consensus. Specialists presented comments to improve the products and their applicability. The materials presented decoded language and playful illustrations with characters representative of the target population. Evidence of satisfactory content validity was presented and can be used in permanent education actions, seeking the qualification of the workforce and in FNE actions within the scope of the law. The graphic materials make it possible to associate the content of the videos with practice in contexts consistent with the reality of the individuals.

Construção e validação de vídeo educativo para estudantes de enfermagem sobre a parada cardiorrespiratória obstétrica

RESUMO Objetivo construir, validar e avaliar vídeo educativo para estudantes de enfermagem sobre a parada cardiorrespiratória obstétrica. Método estudo metodológico, composto pela construção do vídeo, validação de conteúdo por 22 especialistas em parada cardiorrespiratória obstétrica e avaliação por 21 estudantes de graduação em enfermagem. Utilizou-se o Instrumento de Validação de Conteúdo Educacional em Saúde, para validação com os especialistas, e o questionário adaptado do Suitability Assessment of Materials, para avaliação dos estudantes. Na validação com juízes e com o público-alvo, foi considerado válido o item com concordância mínima de 80%, obtida a partir do Índice de Validação de Conteúdo e do Teste Binomial. Resultados o vídeo, com duração de 8 minutos e 53 segundos, contemplou as etapas da assistência de enfermagem na realização do suporte básico de vida à gestante acometida por parada cardiorrespiratória. Na validação de conteúdo, dos 18 itens avaliados, 16 tiveram concordância de 100%, um obteve 95% e o item restante obteve 81%. Na avaliação dos estudantes, dos 13 itens avaliados, 12 possuíram concordância de 100% e o item restante possuiu 95%. Conclusão e implicações para a prática o vídeo foi considerado válido pelos especialistas em parada cardiorrespiratória obstétrica e compreensível pelos estudantes de enfermagem, assim, trata-se de recurso educativo viável para contribuir com a formação da enfermagem.

Construction and validation of an educational video for nursing students about obstetric cardiopulmonary arrest

ABSTRACT Objective to construct, validate and assess educational video for nursing students about obstetric cardiopulmonary arrest. Method this is a methodological study consisting of video construction, content validation by 22 experts in obstetric cardiopulmonary arrest and assessment by 21 undergraduate nursing students. The Health Educational Content Validation Instrument was used for validation with experts, and a questionnaire adapted from the Suitability Assessment of Materials, for student assessment. In the validation with judges and the target audience, the item with a minimum agreement of 80% was considered valid, obtained from the Content Validation Index and the binomial test, was considered valid. Results video, lasting 8 minutes and 53 seconds, contemplated nursing care stages in carrying out basic life support to pregnant women affected by cardiac arrest. In content validation, of the 18 items assessed, 16 had 100% agreement, one had 95% and the remaining item had 81%. In students’ assessment, of the 13 items assessed, 12 had 100% agreement, and the remaining item had 95%. Conclusion and implications for practice the video was considered valid by experts in obstetric cardiopulmonary arrest and understandable by nursing students, thus it is a viable educational resource to contribute to nursing education.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT: KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT CONSIDERING THE ARTICULATION OF ACTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the effect of an educational intervention called “Basic Life Support with the use of the automated external defibrillator” on knowledge development in Nursing professionals, considering the articulation of active teaching and learning strategies. Method: a quasi-experimental intervention study, without a control group and of before-and-after type, carried out with 113 nurses working in the Urgency and Emergency Network of an inland city in the state of São Paulo, through a course presented between March and June 2019 on cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Basic Life Support and use of automated external defibrillator. Three active teaching and learning strategies were articulated: inverted classroom, video lesson, and clinical simulation. Knowledge was assessed by applying a pre- and post-test, and the paired t test was used for the analysis. Results: the best performance regarding knowledge development was presented by the nurses from the hospital area, identifying a mean of 11.90 points in the pre-test and of 16.9 points in the post-test. In general, better scores of knowledge regarding Basic Life Support were obtained, evidenced by statistically significant results, with a p-value<0.001. Conclusion: the articulation of the adopted strategies can enhance knowledge development in Nursing regarding Basic Life Support in adult patients, due to the emphasis on the development of critical thinking, the encouragement of clinical judgment, reflective discussion and active participation of individuals in their learning process, factors that positively impact on the acquisition of the individuals' cognitive ability/knowledge.
