[Procedures to improve daily activities performance in individuals with cerebral anoxia: case report]

Evaluation of cognitive technologies in geriatric rehabilitation: a case study pilot project

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate low-cost technology for cognitive rehabilitation in older individuals with dementia and document changes stemming from a clinical case study using these tools. An activity board, a calendar, a routine organizer and a software program were used and evaluated by specialists (n = 7). A pre-post-case study with an elderly male with dementia was undertaken for four months. All rehabilitation resources were classified as appropriate by the specialists. Post-intervention scores demonstrated improvement in cognitive functioning and daily activities at home. There is a need for further research to assess the therapeutic effects in patients with dementia applying equipment and software to improve cognitive function.

[Neuropsychological assessment in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy]

We investigated the patient cognition with temporal lobe epilepsy that presented or no mesial injury in magnetic resonance exam. We used classics and ecological neuropsychological tests to indicate possible functional alterations, and to compare results between ecological and traditional instruments. Thirty-four people match in age and study year were separate in three groups: 12 patients with mesial injury; 12 without injury and 10 health people. We used for functional evaluation: Wechsler adult intelligence and memory scales subtests, verbal fluency and Rivermead behavior memory test. The patients with injuries presented low cognitive performance when compared with control groups in various tasks: attentional span, memory, speech, daily problems resolution, while the patients without injury showed more compensated with mild attentional alterations. Both traditional memory tests and ecological memory tests were efficient to describe the cognitive profile of patients with epilepsy.

Reabilitação neuropsicológica pediátrica

A neuropsicologia investiga a expressão comportamental das disfunções cerebrais, isto é, a interação entre estruturas cerebrais preservadas e prejudicadas e as funções cognitivas, tais como linguagem, memória, atenção e outras. A neuropsicologia pediátrica possui especificidades: maturação, estratégias cognitivas, ensino formal e cultura, e características intrínsecas à reorganização cerebral. O objetivo da reabilitação neuropsicológica é estabelecer estratégias para adaptação de funções cognitivas afetadas em relação às demandas do ambiente da criança. A reabilitação cognitiva pediátrica auxilia crianças com deficiência mental, epilepsia, traumatismo craniencefálico, síndromes autísticas, tumores cerebrais, paralisia cerebral, etc. Programas de reabilitação neuropsicológica podem ser voltados para dificuldades acadêmicas ou para funções cognitivas. A investigação da efetividade de programas de reabilitação depende de diversos fatores. O neuropsicólogo deve contribuir para o desenvolvimento de novas estratégias de reabilitação cognitiva, ser qualificado para o uso das mesmas e partilhar, com a equipe interdisciplinar, as técnicas e experiências efetivas.
