Procedures’ costs related to outpatient chemotherapy treatment of women suffering from breast cancer

To identify the direct cost of procedures related to an outpatient chemotherapy treatment for women with breast cancer. Method: This is a quantitative research, using the case study methodology, performed in an outpatient chemotherapy of a private hospital. The total cost was calculated by multiplying the time spent by professionals involved in therapeutic procedures, the unit cost of direct labor, adding to the cost of materials, drugs and solutions. For performing the calculations, we used the Brazilian currency (R$). Results: The average total cost per chemotherapy session corresponded to R$ 1,783.01 (100%), being R$ 1,671.66 (93,75%) spent with drugs, R$ 74,98 (4.21%) with materials, R$ 28.49 (1.60%) with labor and R$ 7.88 (0.44%) with solutions. Conclusion: The results may support discussions and decision making for the management of costs related to chemotherapy aimed at reducing expenses and eliminating waste without harm to the care provided. 


[Costs and consumption of material resources in pediatric intensive and semi-intensive care units]

Cost management of hospital material resources is a trendy research topic, especially in specialized health units. Nurses are pointed out as the main managers for costs and consumption of hospital materials resources. This study aimed to characterize Pediatric Intensive and Semi-Intensive Care Units of a teaching hospital and investigate costs and consumption of material resources used to treat patients admitted to these units. This is a descriptive exploratory study with retrospective data and quantitative approach. Data were obtained from a Hospital Information System and analyzed according to the ABC classification. The average expenditures were similar in both the neonatal and cardiac units, and lower in Pediatric Intensive and Semi-Intensive care units. There was a significant variation in the monthly consumption of materials. Higher cost materials had a greater impact on the budget of the studied units. The data revealed the importance of using a systematic method for the analysis of materials consumption and expenditure in pediatric units. They subsidize administrative and economic actions.

[Medical-hospital material management and the working process in a public hospital]

This article presents an exploratory-descriptive study structured in a qualitative approach. The main objective was to identify the perception of medical-hospital materials on the work process of professionals in a medium complexity public hospital. Information has been collected using the research question: How does the materials management process influence work process? The report analysis has identified five different categories: lack of autonomy in the choice of materials, lack of maintenance of equipment, bureaucracy in the purchasing process, poor quality and absence of professional involvement in the materials management. It is concluded that the materials management is focused on the nursing direction, which requires greater involvement of other professionals in the materials choice used to reduce the weakness in that process.

[Use of medical supplies in surgical center after implementation of an automated management system]

The study had the objective to compare the efficiency of the Automated System of Management of Hospital Medical Materials as opposed to the traditional system in relation to the consumption of stock of materials. It involved a comparative analysis with a quantitative approach adopted in the Surgical Center of the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo. The study dealt with 293 items of hospital medical materials during the month-periods of February to May of 2007 and of 2008. The results showed that the use of materials in 2008 decreased by 8.13% as compared to 2007. The volume of materials in stock in 2008 was reduced by 26.22% also in the same period, and the cost of these materials stocked in 2008 showed a 12.46% decrease.

[Implementation of computerized material management system at the University of São Paulo University Hospital]

This is an experience report on the process of implementing a computerized materials management system at the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo. The system was called Materials Management System (SGM). The process comprised four phases: choice of the model and information tool; restructuring of the logistic materials process at the hospital; restructuring of the support areas and establishment of the SGM system itself. A study carried out at the Surgical Center after the establishment demonstrated that, when comparing materials consumption and inventories in the SGM with the Traditional System, the consumed quantity and the cost of inventory materials at the Unit decreased.
