Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to analyze the immediate effect on a singer's voice of a flexible silicone tube immersed in water combined with ascending and descending vocalise scales compared with ascending and descending vocalise scales alone. METHOD A pre- and post-intervention quasi-experimental study was conducted. Thirty adult singers between 18 and 45 years old with no laryngeal disorders performed the two techniques for 3 min each on different days. Acoustic measurements of frequency, jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, noise, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS), maximum phonation time (MPT), voice range profile, and self-perceived vocal effort (Borg Category Ratio 10-BR Scale adapted for vocal effort) were assessed before and after performing the techniques. RESULTS The results indicated an increase in singers' CPPS and MPT values and a decrease in shimmer and noise when performing with a flexible silicone tube immersed in water combined with vocalise. The singers reported a perception of decreased vocal effort after both methods. However, the diminished perceived vocal effort became more pronounced with the tube phonation technique combined with vocalise. CONCLUSIONS Phonation in tubes combined with vocalise improved the vocal acoustic parameters (including cepstral measurements), increased MPT, and diminished perceived vocal effort. Although using vocalise alone diminished perceived vocal effort, this decrease was more pronounced in the tube phonation technique combined with vocalise.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the accuracy of traditional acoustic measurements (F0, perturbation, and noise) and formant measurements in discriminating between women with and without voice disorders, and with different laryngeal disorders. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective. METHOD Two hundred and sixty women participated. All participants recorded the spoken vowel /Ɛ/ and underwent laryngeal visual examination. Acoustic measures of the mean and standard deviation of the fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, and the values of the first three formants (F1, F2, and F3) were obtained. RESULTS Individual acoustic measurements did not demonstrate adequate (<70%) performance when discriminating between women with and without voice disorders. The combination of the standard deviation of the F0, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, F1, F2, and F3 showed acceptable (>70%) performance in classifying women with and without voice disorders. Individual measures of jitter as well as F1 and F3 demonstrated acceptable (>70%) performance when distinguishing women with different laryngeal diagnoses, including without voice disorders (healthy larynges), Reinke's edema, unilateral vocal fold paralysis, and sulcus vocalis. The combination of acoustic measurements showed excellent (>80%) performance when discriminating women without voice disorder from those with Reinke's edema (mean of F0, F1, and F3) and with sulcus vocalis (mean of F0, F1, and F2). CONCLUSIONS Individual formant and traditional acoustic measurements do not demonstrate adequate performance when discriminating between women with and without voice disorders. However, the combination of traditional and formant measurements improves the discrimination between the presence and absence of voice disorders and differentiates several laryngeal diagnoses.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the association between voice disorder and aspects related to breathing mode in children, according to sex. Methods: 250 children, aged six to nine years, attending a public school in São Paulo city, were selected. The collection consisted of spontaneously audio recorded speech samples. The breathing mode was evaluated for lip resting posture and nasal flow. Three audiologists performed the perceptual evaluation of the voice quality, with the help of GIRBAS scale. The results were associated using the chi-square test (p = 0.05). Results: 50.4% females and 49.6% males. As for the overall grade (G), 12.8% had voice disorder with respect to voice quality. In the breathing mode, 36.8% presented alterations in lip posture and 71.2%, in nasal flow. The associations between voice disorder and gender (p = 0.96), lip posture (p = 0.38) and nasal flow (p = 0.18) and between alterations in the nasal flow and sex (p = 0.449) were not confirmed. The association between lip posture and sex revealed significant differences in favor of males (p = 0.003). Conclusion: there was no statistically significant difference associating voice disorders with breathing mode (lip posture and nasal flow) and gender.

Abstract

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare dysphonic individuals to nondysphonic with regards to electrical activity of extrinsic laryngeal muscles related to perceptual and acoustic vocal parameters. HYPOTHESIS Dysphonic individuals have higher electrical activity in the supra and infrahyoid muscles than those nondysphonic. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional, case series study. METHODS Forty-one subjects, divided into two groups according to the presence of dysphonia, underwent evaluation of surface electromyography, auditory-perceptual, and acoustic evaluations of voice during the vocal rest and sustained emissions of the vowel /ε/ and count of 20 to 30 at usual and strong intensities. RESULTS The dysphonic group differed significantly from the nondysphonic by (1) lower electrical activity normalized by the maximum sustained voluntary activity evaluated in all tasks of phonation in the suprahyoid group; (2) lower recruitment of electrical activity in emissions of strong intensity compared with those of usual intensity in the suprahyoid muscles to emit the vowel /ε/ (13.66 ± 5.17 in dysphonic group and 35.20 ± 7.60 in the nondysphonic group, P = 0.029) and in the infrahyoid muscles in the count of 20 to 30 (14.90 ± 4.69 vs. 42.01 ± 6.15; P < 0.001) and to emit the vowel /ε/ (11.47 ± 6.52 vs. 22.66 ± 9.05, P < 0.001); (3) lower vocal intensity to produce the vowel /ε/ in usual and strong intensities and count in strong intensity. The electrical activities of the maximum sustained voluntary activity were reduced with increasing degree of dysphonia. CONCLUSIONS There was lower electrical activity of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles in dysphonic individuals compared with nondysphonic, and related to the degree of dysphonia.

Abstract
Treze professores aceitaram participar do programa.

Abstract
It is important to establish normal voice standards in order to help guide voice professionals. Aim to describe acoustic voice measures of adult young women with normal larynxes and without voice complaints. Method 56 women underwent ENT evaluation and speech screening. The “A” vowel utterance was digitally recorded and analyzed by means of the Praat (Version 4.6.10) software. The data was analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and by the Shapiro-Wilk test with a 5% significance level. The study was cross-section and exploratory. Results normal distribution measures were: fundamental frequency; Jitter (local); Jitter (local, absolute); Jitter (ppq5); Jitter (ddp). The Jitter (rap), all the Shimmer, the noise/harmonic ratio (NHR) and the harmonic/noise ratio (HNR) values did not follow a normal distribution. Conclusion It seems that the measures which followed the normal distribution can be used as base-normal values for the interpretation of acoustic voice analysis of those women with and without laryngeal disorders. All the values with and without normal distribution showed results similar to the ones present in the national and international literature.

Abstract
Past studies on the maximum phonation time (MPT) in children have shown different results in duration. This factor may reflect the neuromuscular and aerodynamic control of phonation in patients; such control might be used as an indicator of other evaluation methods on a qualitative and quantitative basis. Aim to verify measures of MPT and voice acoustic characteristics in 23 children aged four to six year and eight months. Method The sampling process comprised a questionnaire that was sent to parents, followed by auditory screening and a voice perceptive-auditory assessment based on the R.A.S.A.T. scale. Data collection included the MPT. Study a prospective and cross-sectional study. Results The MPT was 7.42s, 6.35s and 7.19s; as age increased, the MPT also increase significantly; the s/z relation at all ages was close to one. Conclusions The results mostly agree with the medical literature. MPT values, however, were higher than in other Brazilian studies. It may be concluded that the ages that were analyzed are going through neuromuscular maturation; lack of structural maturity and neuromuscular control was more evident in chidlren aged four years.

Abstract
Despite the growing experience obtained from the National Pro-Voice Campaigns in screening individuals with laryngeal alterations, we still have not established which would be the best assessment method: speech and hearing screening alone, laryngoscopy alone, or a joint work with physicians and speech therapists doing the screening together. Aim the goal of the present study was to assess the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of the auditory voice-perception analysis compared to videolaryngoscopy as a screening method for individuals with laryngo-pharyngeal disorders. Materials and Methods We compared the vocal aspects (GRBASI scale, pitch, loudness, CPF and resonance) and videolaryngoscopic from 567 individuals who participated in the National Pro-Voice Campaign 2005 in a tertiary university hospital. Results the most frequent laryngeal alteration was laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (LFR) (43.5%), followed by benign lesions (17%) and suspected malignant lesions (1%). The sensitivity of the auditory voice-perception assessment was of 91% for patients with benign lesions and 100% in those with suspected malignant lesions; however, it was only 76% in LFR. Of those tests considered normal, there were vocal alterations in 52%. The positive predictive value was of 71% and the negative was 61%. Conclusions Despite its importance, the auditory voice-perception assessment should not be used as a single screening instrument in voice health campaigns.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
