Abstract
A number of viruses and bacterial species have been implicated as contributors to atherosclerosis, potentially providing novel pathways for prevention. Epidemiological studies examining the association between Helicobacter pylori and cardiovascular disease have yielded variable results and no studies have been conducted in nonhuman primates. In this investigation, we examined the relationship between H. pylori infection and atherosclerosis development in socially housed, pre- and postmenopausal cynomolgus macaques consuming human-like diets. Ninety-four premenopausal cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were fed for 36 months an atherogenic diet deriving its protein from either casein lactalbumin(CL) or high isoflavone soy (SOY). Animals were then ovariectomized and fed either the same or the alternate diet for an additional 36 months. Iliac artery biopsies were obtained at the time of ovariectomy and iliac and coronary artery sections were examined at the end of the study. Evidence of H. pylori infection was found in 64% of the monkeys and 46% of animals had live H. pylori within coronary atheromas as determined by mRNA-specific in situ hybridization. There was a significant linear relationship between the densities of gastric and atheroma organisms. Helicobactor pylori infection correlated with increased intimal plaque area and thickness at both the premenopausal and postmenopausal time points and regardless of diet (p< 0.01), although animals consuming the SOY diet throughout had the least amount of atherosclerosis. Additionally, plasma lipid profiles, intimal collagen accumulation, ICAM-1, and plaque macrophage densities were adversely affected by H. pylori infection among animals consuming the CL diet, while the SOY diet had the opposite effect. Plaque measurements were more highly associated with the densities of cagA-positive H. pylori within coronary atheromas than with the densities of gastric organisms, whereas plasma lipid changes were associated with H. pylori infection, but not cagA status. This study provides strong evidence that live H. pylori infects atheromas, exacerbates atherosclerotic plaque development, and alters plasma lipid profiles independently of diet or hormonal status. Finally, socially subordinate animals relative to their dominant counterparts had a greater prevalence of H. pylori, suggesting a stress effect. The results indicate that early H. pylori eradication could prevent or delay development of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Inflammatory changes in the stomach caused by Helicobacter pylori indirectly and directly affect liver function. Moreover, the bacteria may worsen the course of the liver cirrhosis. The study aimed at evaluating the incidence of H. pylori infection among patients with liver cirrhosis, depending on the etiology and injury stage, scored according to Child-Pugh classification. Stage of esophageal varices and endoscopic inflammatory lesions in the stomach were evaluated, depending on the presence of H. pylori infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 147 patients with liver cirrhosis: 42 were infected with hepatitis C virus, 31 were infected with hepatitis B virus, 56 had alcoholic liver cirrhosis, and 18 had primary biliary cirrhosis. Diagnosis of H. pylori infection was performed based on the presence of immunoglobulin G antibodies in serum. RESULTS H. pylori infection was found in 46.9% of patients. The incidence of H. pylori infection among patients with postinflammatory liver cirrhosis was significantly higher (P=0.001), as compared with patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Ammonia concentration was significantly higher in patients infected with H. pylori, compared with noninfected individuals (129 vs. 112 μmol/l; P=0.002). Incidence of H. pylori infection in patients without esophageal varices was significantly lower compared with patients with esophageal varices (14 vs. 60%; P<0.001). CONCLUSION H. pylori infection is significantly more frequent among patients with postinflammatory liver cirrhosis (infected with hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B virus) than in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis or primary biliary cirrhosis. H. pylori infection correlates with elevated concentration of blood ammonia and the incidence of esophageal varices.

Abstract
The present study was planned to evaluate correlation between Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and autoimmune liver disease (AILD). A total of 60 patients diagnosed with AILD in Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College were continuously enrolled in the present study. HP infection was detected by 13C-urea breath test. The levels of anti-myeloperoxidase were tested by ELISA. The positive rate of anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA), anti-smooth muscle antibody (SMA) and anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA) were tested by indirect immunofluorescence. The positive rates of anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA-M2), anti-liver-kidney microsomal antibody (LKM-1), anti-liver cytoplasm antibody I (LC-1) and anti-soluble liver antigen/liver-pancreas antigen (SLA/LP) were tested by immunoblotting. Liver function indexes including alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and glutamyltransferase, were analyzed with a fully automatic biochemical analyzer. The levels of serum cytokine IFN-γ, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were tested by ELISA. A total of 37 patients (61.67%) were observed to be HP-positive. MPO-positive rate, positive rate of ANA, AMA, SMA and ANCA and positive rate of AMA-M2, LKM-1, LC-1 and SLA/LP in patients with positive HP infection were significantly higher than those of patients with negative HP infection. On the other hand, the levels of liver function indices did not showed any significant differences among HP-positive cases or HP-negative cases. However, the levels of IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α in patients with positive HP infection were significantly higher than those of patients with negative HP infection. In conclusion, the positive infection rate of HP infection in patients with AILD is high and is closely associated with various positive immune antibodies as well as cytokine levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that infects over 50% of the human population worldwide. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that H. pylori may cause liver diseases, and the underlying relationship between H. pylori infection and chronic hepatitis B has attracted much attention. This study aimed to examine the association between H. pylori infection and the progression of chronic hepatitis B in the Chinese population. METHODS A search was performed of the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases, as well as the Chinese databases, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data, for studies published between January 1, 1994 and November 1, 2015. RESULTS In total, 2977 patients were included in the chronic hepatitis B group, while 1668 participants were included in the healthy control group. The prevalence of H. pylori among patients with chronic hepatitis B was significantly higher than that among those without chronic hepatitis B. The pooled odds ratio was 3.17. In the subgroup analysis, the odds ratio was 4.28 for hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis and 6.02 for hepatocellular carcinoma. CONCLUSION These results indicate a strong relationship between H. pylori and chronic hepatitis B, particularly during HBV progression.

Abstract
CD4 T helper (Th) cells are reported to be essential for initiating and maintaining an effective immune response to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Th9 cells are a new subset of CD4 Th cells that produce interleukin (IL)-9 and IL-10. The present study aimed to investigate the percentage of Th9 cells relative to the number of CD4 cells in peripheral blood. We also measured serum IL-9 and IL-10 levels in different stages of HBV infection and their relationship with progress and prognosis of liver disease. Whole blood samples from 111 patients with HBV infection, including 39 chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 25 HBV-liver cirrhosis (HBV-LC), 21 acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) patients, and 26 healthy controls were collected. The percentage of Th9 cells and serum IL-9 and IL-10 levels were determined. There was no significant difference in the percentage of Th9 cells and serum IL-9 and IL-10 levels among different groups, nor were these related to hepatitis B e antigen status, complications of cirrhosis, inflammation index, or prognosis indexes. There was no change in the percentage of Th9 cells before and after antiviral treatment in CHB patients. There was no correlation of Th9 cells with survival of ACLF patients. However, IL-9 and IL-10 levels were significantly higher in the nonsurvived ACLF patients compared to survived ACLF patients. Furthermore, baseline IL-9 level predicted the prognosis of ACLF patients with 87.5% sensitivity and 61.5% specificity.Thus, our data indicate that Th9 cells were unlikely involved in the pathogenesis of HBV infection, but elevation in IL-9 and IL-10 may signal poor prognosis for ACLF.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori is a well-known causative organism of chronic gastric diseases and has been found in many hepatic carcinoma samples. To explore the expression of apoptosis-related proteins and carcinoma development in H. pylori-infected livers, we utilized BALB/cAnSlac mice to establish an H. pylori-infected model by oral inoculation and orthotopic grafts of hepatic tumors by H22 cells, respectively. We found that H. pylori colonies could not be cultured from all liver and tumor samples. However, its 16S rRNA was detectable in 85.3% of livers and 66.7% of tumors in the infected mice. Inflammatory cells were observed and thinly distributed in the lobule portions of the liver, and H. pylori mainly existed in the infected hepatic sinusoids and the necrotic areas of the infected tumors. No significant difference was found in liver to body weight ratio between the infected and uninfected. Moreover, the pathological tumor difference was unremarkable between the two. The proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) expression in the infected tumors was significantly higher and lower, respectively, than those of the uninfected tumors. However, no significant difference in Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) expression existed. The results indicate that H. pylori found in the livers which were infected by H. pylori oral inoculation could contribute to the infiltration of inflammatory cells in livers. Although H. pylori has no significant impact on the liver to body weight ratio or tumor Bcl-2 expression, it may upregulate PCNA expression and downregulate Bax expression, respectively. All our findings show that H. pylori may promote proliferation and inhibit apoptosis of tumor cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric and extra-gastric diseases. Therefore, H. pylori infection might be a "systemic" disease. AIM To investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection status and serum parameter levels responding to multi-organ functions. METHODS A total of 2,044 subjects were selected, including 1,249 males and 795 females with ages ranging from 16 to 86 years. Relevant parameters including blood lipids, complete blood count, tumor markers, indexes of stomach, kidney, liver, thyroid, and immune system function, H.pylori IgG antibody levels, and (14)C-UBT were collected. RESULTS Serum pepsinogen (PG)I, PGII, and gastrin (G)17 levels were decreased in chronic long-term, past, and acute short-term infection patients compared with uninfected controls. However, the serum PGI/II ratio increased gradually. Serum white blood cell levels gradually decreased in past, chronic long-term, and acute short-term infection patients compared with uninfected controls. The same trend was also observed for CD4(+) T cell levels. In addition, LDL levels were higher in chronic long-term infection, HDL levels were lower in past infection, and ALP and CEA levels were higher in acute short-term infection compared with the uninfected group. CONCLUSIONS Helicobacter pylori infection correlated with increased PGI, PGII, G17, WBC, and CD4(+) T cell levels, and decreased PGI/II ratio. In chronic long-term or past infection, H. pylori infection was associated with higher LDL or lower HDL levels. In acute short-term infection, H. pylori infection correlated with higher ALP and CEA levels. H. pylori infection correlated with serum parameter levels responding to multi-organ functions.

Abstract
Cirrhosis is a severe threat to public health. Some studies have suggested that cirrhosis is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, but the results remain controversial. This meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the association between cirrhosis and H. pylori infection. Published articles on H. pylori prevalence in patients with cirrhosis were collected to assess the potential associations between H. pylori infection and cirrhosis risk. Twenty-one eligible studies were included for the analysis. Data on publication year, geographic region, and etiology were summarized. Metaregression models and subgroup analyses were established to screen the factors for heterogeneity. Of the 322 articles retrieved, 21 met the inclusion criteria. These studies involved 6135 cases, with a total H. pylori infection rate of 52.26%. This meta-analysis showed significant difference in H. pylori infection between patients with cirrhosis and controls [odd ratio (OR)=2.05, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33-3.18, P<0.0001]. The subgroup analysis revealed, in contrast to Asia (OR=0.90, 95% CI: 0.48-1.66, P<0.0001), Europe (OR=2.98, 95% CI: 2.02-4.39, P<0.0001), and America (OR=4.75, 95% CI: 1.42-15.95, P=0.249), a significantly higher prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with cirrhosis. On the basis of etiology, there was a higher prevalence of H. pylori infection due to primary biliary cirrhosis (OR=1.75, 95% CI: 1.15-2.64, P=0.147) and viral cirrhosis (OR=2.66, 95% CI: 1.24-5.71, P<0.0001) compared with alcohol cirrhosis (OR=0.77, 95% CI: 0.04-16.59, P<0.0001). The pooled data suggest that there is a significantly high prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with cirrhosis. Large-scale and multicenter studies are needed to further investigate the relation between cirrhosis and H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infect millions of people and can induce cancer. We investigated if H. pylori infection promoted HCV-associated liver cancer. Helicobacter-free C3B6F1 wild-type (WT) and C3B6F1-Tg(Alb1-HCVN)35Sml (HT) male and female mice were orally inoculated with H. pylori SS1 or sterile media. Mice were euthanized at ~12 mo postinoculation and samples were collected for analyses. There were no significant differences in hepatocellular tumor promotion between WT and HT mice; however, HT female mice developed significantly larger livers with more hepatic steatosis than WT female mice. H. pylori did not colonize the liver nor promote hepatocellular tumors in WT or HT mice. In the stomach, H. pylori induced more corpus lesions in WT and HT female mice than in WT and HT male mice, respectively. The increased corpus pathology in WT and HT female mice was associated with decreased gastric H. pylori colonization, increased gastric and hepatic interferon gamma expression, and increased serum Th1 immune responses against H. pylori. HT male mice appeared to be protected from H. pylori-induced corpus lesions. Furthermore, during gastric H. pylori infection, HT male mice were protected from gastric antral lesions and hepatic steatosis relative to WT male mice and these effects were associated with increased serum TNF-α. Our findings indicate that H. pylori is a gastric pathogen that does not promote hepatocellular cancer and suggest that the HCV transgene is associated with amelioration of specific liver and gastric lesions observed during concurrent H. pylori infection in mice.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is one of the most common bacteria infecting humans. Recently, certain extragastric manifestations, linked to Hp infection, have been widely investigated, suggesting that Hp infection might be a 'systemic' disease. Accumulating, yet limited, evidence points to a potential association between Hp infection and lung cancer risk. Epidemiologic studies have shown that odds ratios (estimated relative risks) of lung cancer with Hp infection range from 1.24 to 17.78 compared with the controls, suggesting an increased lung cancer risk in the population exposed to Hp infection although far from supporting a causal relationship between Hp and lung cancer. Many studies have demonstrated the existence of Hp in the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract with no direct evidence of Hp-localization in lung tissue in the published literatures, rendering the possible functional mechanism underlying the association an open question. We followed the classic hypothesis-generating path, where we have thoroughly reviewed the publications on lung cancer and Hp infection from serological association to possible mechanisms as: (i) p130cas activated by Src kinase following Hp-host communication and p130cas-related carcinogenesis as in various malignancies; and (ii) gastroesophageal reflux and inhalation of urease or gastrin, which are Hp-related carcinogenic factors and present in lung tissues. We propose rigorous investigations regarding the Hp-lung cancer association and, if confirmed, the mechanisms of Hp infection leading to lung cancer development and progression. Clarification on Hp-lung cancer association is important for the understanding of lung cancer beyond tobacco-smoking-related carcinogenesis.

Abstract
In the last year, different diseases possibly linked to Helicobacter pylori infection but localized outside of the stomach have been investigated. There are, in fact, several studies concerning cardiovascular diseases, hematologic disorders, neurologic diseases, metabolic, hepatobiliary diseases, and other conditions. Some of those studies, such as those on sideropenic anemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, are quite large and well conducted, while in other cases there are just small or isolated studies or even case reports. Nonetheless, there is much interest among researchers all over the world for such a topic as demonstrated by the large number of studies published in the last year.
