Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the serum proteinogram, identifying and quantifying the acute-phase proteins (APPs) of healthy horses and those naturally affected by colic syndrome. Blood samples were collected from 9 healthy horses and 17 horses with clinical (G1) or surgical (G2) colic at the time of arrival at the veterinary hospital (M0) and 24 (M1), 48 (M2), and 72 (M3) hours after the initiation of treatment. The APPs were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and their concentrations were determined by computerized densitometry. Protein identification was performed using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. Nine APPs were identified: α2-macroglobulin, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, α1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, α1-acid glycoprotein, apolipoprotein A1, and serum amyloid A. Ceruloplasmin (Cp) presented an elevation at M0 in G2 in relation to G1 and the control group (CG). Serum amyloid A (SAA) presented an elevation with a difference at M3 in G1 and G2, compared with CG. In the comparison between the time points within each group (G1 and G2), there was an increase in SAA in G2 with a difference at M1, M2, and M3. Cp and SAA were suitable for evaluating the acute-phase response in horses with colic. Cp was an indicator of colic with surgical resolution. SAA presented favorable behavior for its use as a biomarker to establish the prognosis in horses with colic. The serial measurement of these proteins was useful in differentiating the clinical or surgical treatment and prognosis of horses with this disorder.

Abstract
The electrophoretic fractionation represents one of the most reliable methods for the identification of blood proteins in ruminants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum proteinogram of sheep with acute ruminal lactic acidosis (ARA) using the SDS-PAGE electrophoresis technique. Ten Santa Inês ewes were used and blood was collected to establish the basal values for induction of ARA. Sucrose was administered orally in a single dose of 15 g/kg body mass. After the administration, blood samples were obtained at the following moments: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h. Subsequently, samples were obtained every seven days for three further weeks, until complete one month. The total of 13 proteins were identified: immunoglobulins A and G, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, α1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, α1-acid glycoprotein, proteins of molecular weight 95, 46, 36 and 31 kDa. The increase of haptoglobin from 08 h coincides with the ruminal pH decrease, possibly due to the death of Gram negative bacteria and also the inflammatory process on the rumen. Fibrinogen was presented on highest mean at 48 h and returned to normal with 144 h. We can conclude that changes in serum levels of acute phase proteins can assist the clinical evaluation and diagnosis of ARA in sheep.

Abstract
Resumo: Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o proteinograma do colostro de ovelhas submetidas a administração de propileno glicol e de cobalto associado à vitamina B12 no final da gestação. Dezoito ovelhas da raça Santa Inês, prenhas e com idade variando entre 18 meses a cinco anos foram distribuídas, por amostragem probabilística em três grupos experimentais, aproximadamente 30 dias antes da data prevista para o parto. No Grupo 1 (G1/n=6) foram administrados 30mL de propileno glicol P.A. via oral diariamente; no Grupo 2 (G2/n=6) foi administrado 1mg de cloreto de cobalto em solução a 1% via oral diariamente e 2mg de vitamina B12, via intramuscular semanalmente e no Grupo 3 (G3/n=6): grupo controle. Logo após o parto procedeu-se a colheita de 30mL de colostro, que foram acondicionados em recipientes apropriados e encaminhados ao laboratório. Após homogeneização, adicionou-se a cada 1.000μL de colostro, 75μL de solução de renina, que foi mantido em banho-maria a 37ºC por aproximadamente 20 minutos e centrifugado a 21.000G durante dez minutos em centrífuga refrigerada. Posteriormente, a fração intermediária, correspondente ao soro do colostro, foi aliquotada e mantida em ultrafreezer a -80oC para posterior determinação das proteínas. A determinação da proteína total do soro colostral foi realizada empregando-se reagente comercial. A separação das proteínas foi realizada utilizando-se a técnica de eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida contendo dodecil sulfato de sódio (SDS-PAGE). Foram identificadas as proteínas IgA, lactoferrina, albumina, IgG de cadeia pesada (IgGCP), β-caseína, IgG de cadeia leve (IgGCL), β-lactoglobulina and α-lactoalbumina, não havendo influência da administração dos suplementos na fase final da gestação sobre as concentrações protéicas do colostro.

Abstract
The study aimed to identify potential biomarkers of mammary gland infection in Santa Inês sheep. Commercial flocks of sheep provided the same hygiene, sanitary, and nutritional management under semi-intensive production systems were monitored during the lactation stage-and assessed 15, 30, 60, and 90 days after delivery (through the end of lactation and weaning). The California Mastitis Test (CMT) was performed on the mammary glands. Milk was collected for bacterial examination and protein analysis. Bacterial culture and biochemical characterization of the samples were performed. Forty-two milk samples from healthy glands (negative CMT and bacterial testing) and 43 milk samples from infected glands (positive CMT and bacterial testing) taken at the predefined time points were assessed. A rennin solution was used to obtain the whey. The proteins analysis was performed using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which allowed for the quantification of nine whey proteins produced in healthy glands: serum albumin, lactoferrin, IgA, IgG heavy-chain (IgG HC), IgG light-chain (IgG LC), total IgG (IgG HC + IgG LC), α-lactalbumin, β-lactoglobulin, protein with MW 15.000 Da, protein with MW 29.000 Da and eleven whey proteins secreted by infected glands, including haptoglobin and α-1-acid glycoprotein. A comparison of whey proteins between healthy and infected glands showed increases (P<0.05) in the secreted and total contents of all proteins, except for IgG LC and α-lactoalbumin. The most significant changes were observed in α-1-acid glycoprotein, lactoferrin and haptoglobin, which showed three-, five-, and seven-fold increases in secretion, respectively. This study showed that haptoglobin, α-1-acid glycoprotein, lactoferrin, albumin, and the IgA and IgG immunoglobulins may serve as potential biomarkers for mammary gland infection in sheep.

Abstract
The initial inflammatory stages of the colic syndrome include changes known as acute phase response. The aim of this study was to contribute with the establishment of reference values concerning the electrophoretogram of peritoneal liquid from healthy horses and horses submitted to experimentally induced intestinal obstruction. Twenty-one horses were allotted in four groups: duodenal obstruction (DG), ileum obstruction (IG), left-dorsal colon obstruction (MG), and control group (CG). Peritoneal liquid was sampled before obtruction (T0), with 3 hours of obstruction (T3) and 6, 30, 102 and 174 hours after desobstructing (T6, T30, T102 and T174, respectively). Total protein levels were determined by the biuret method and protein fractions were obtained by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. The acute phase proteins (APP) identified were Immunoglobulin-A, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, α1-antitrypsin, heavy and light chains of immunoglobulin-G, haptoglobin, α1-acid glycoprotein and a still unnamed protein, which was called P24. There was no difference (P>0.3) in protein levels among groups, although a significant difference (P>0.05) was observed between distinct experimental moments in each group evidencing a higher response of the APP in the obstructed groups. The APP fractioning of the peritoneal liquid was standardized to establish a standard curve for healthy equines and those submitted to induced intestinal obstruction. Moreover, it was verified that the SDS-PAGE electrophoresis was sensitive and effective to help diagnose abdominal inflammatory processes.

Abstract
Early diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis favors prompt institution of treatment and improves the prognosis for the animal, since this disease causes mortality among dogs. Studies have shown that determining the concentration of acute-phase proteins (APPs) may contribute towards early detection of disease and aid in predicting the prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the APP profile in dogs experimentally infected with Ehrlichia canis, at the start of the infection and after treatment. It also investigated whether any correlation between APP levels and the clinical and laboratory alterations over the course of the disease would be possible. The results obtained showed abnormal levels of all the APPs on the third day after infection (D3), with the highest levels being reached on D18, with the exception of ceruloplasmin and acid glycoprotein, which presented their peaks on D6 and D12 respectively. We concluded that assessment of APP levels could contribute towards establishing an early diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis, particularly regarding acid glycoprotein and ceruloplasmin, since these proteins were detected at increased levels even before the onset of clinical and laboratory findings of the disease.

Abstract
Thirty health queens were submitted to ovariectomy by conventional technique or by videolaparoscopy. In order to study the intensity of inflammatory response by means of acute phase protein analysis and white blood cell count, serum samples were taken before and until 144 hours after the surgical procedures. The protein concentrations that were significantly increased 24 hours after surgical procedures were: ceruloplasmin, hemopexin, haptoglobin, and α1-acid glycoprotein, 69.8%, 103.5%, 117.3%, and 199.0%, respectively, for conventional ovariectomy; and 22.3%, 46.1%, 79.8%, and 74.6%, respectively, for laparoscopic ovariectomy. Therefore, inflammatory response was more intense in queens submitted to conventional ovariectomy. Results indicate that the increase or decrease in acute phase proteins, as well as in white blood cells count, may be useful in the evaluation of inflammatory response induced by these surgical procedures.

Abstract
Foram utilizados oito eqüinos distribuídos em dois grupos, submetidos ou não à obstrução experimental do jejuno mediante a colocação de um balão intraluminal. Os animais do grupo 1 foram submetidos à enterotomia com colocação do balão sem distensão suficiente para provocar isquemia e os do grupo 2 à isquemia por obstrução do jejuno durante quatro horas. Para determinação do hemograma e da hemogasometria foram obtidas amostras de sangue venoso em quatro momentos: uma hora antes do procedimento cirúrgico (M1), ao final da obstrução/isquemia (M2) e uma hora (M3) e 18 horas (M4) após o início da reperfusão/desobstrução. Não houve diferença entre grupos nas contagens de hemácias, leucócitos totais, neutrófilos bastonetes, neutrófilos segmentados, linfócitos e monócitos, bem como no teor de hemoglobina. Houve diferença no volume globular em M2 e na contagem de eosinófilos em M3. Na hemogasometria, em ambos os grupos, registrou-se diminuição dos teores de sódio, potássio, cálcio ionizado e cloro, da pressão parcial de oxigênio e da saturação de oxiemoglobina. Os resultados indicam que o hemograma, isoladamente, não fornece informações conclusivas, enquanto a hemogasometria possibilita determinar, precocemente, o volume de reposição hidroeletrolítica a ser administrado em eqüino com abdômen agudo decorrente de obstrução de jejuno, auxiliando no tratamento e no melhor prognóstico da afecção intestinal.

Abstract
Avaliaram-se as alterações do proteinograma sérico de eqüinos submetidos à isquemia e reperfusão do cólon menor por distensão intraluminal. Foram utilizados 10 animais submetidos à laparotomia pelo flanco, em posição quadrupedal, para a indução de obstrução no cólon menor durante um período de quatro horas. Cinco animais foram instrumentados, mas sem distensão (grupo controle - G1). Em cinco outros animais, foi realizada isquemia mural por distensão do cólon menor via manguito inflado com 40mmHg (grupo distendido - G2). Foram colhidas amostras de sangue antes da intervenção cirúrgica (M1), com 4 horas da colocação do manguito (M2) e com 3 horas (M3) e 12 horas (M4) de reperfusão. Após centrifugação e fracionamento das amostras, as proteínas de fase aguda foram separadas por eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida contendo SDS-PAGE, e suas concentrações determinadas por densitometria computadorizada. Foram encontradas 19 proteínas no fracionamento eletroforético, com peso molecular variando de 185.000 a 14.000 Daltons (Da). Os pesos moleculares encontrados, correspondentes às proteínas mais conhecidas, foram ceruloplasmina, 130.000 Da; proteína C-reativa, 122.000 Da; transferrina, 85.000 Da; α1-antitripsina, 61.000 Da; haptoglobina, 47.000 Da; e glicoproteína ácida, 40.000 Da. Os resultados mostram que proteínas de fase aguda se alteram após o trauma cirúrgico.
