Abstract
ABSTRACT Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which dopaminergic loss occurs in the basal nuclei region. One major complaint associated with PD is upper extremity motor deficits (UE), frequently reported in difficulties to perform activities of daily living (ADL), which may negatively affect quality of life. In recent years new technologies have emerged to assist the UE rehabilitation process in PD, such as virtual reality. Therefore, this study sought to verify the effects of an intervention in the UE with semi-immersive virtual reality equipment on ADLs and quality of life of individuals with PD. Six individuals with PD were selected for intervention, and evaluated by the Mini Mental State Examination, the Hoehn & Yahr Scale, the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), the Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) and the test d’évaluation des membres supérieurs de personnes âgées (TEMPA). The interventions lasted 27 minutes per session, twice per week, for 5 weeks, using the Leap Motion Controller. Individuals showed improvement in muscle strength, muscle endurance, ADLs, and quality of life, all statistically significant. In conclusion, the protocol based on virtual reality applied to the upper limbs effectively improved the activities of daily living and quality of life in individuals with PD.

Abstract

Abstract
Background/aims Emotional health is an important factor in clinical and functional manifestations of Parkinson's disease. The aim of this study was to correlate clinical features with depressive symptoms in elderly patients with Parkinson's disease. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. The Geriatric Depression Scale 15 was used to evaluate depressive symptoms, the modified Hoehn and Yahr scale was used to describe the symptom progression of Parkinson's disease and the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire 39 to assess the quality of life. The Pearson correlation and the chi-square test were used. Significance level was set at 5%. Results A total of 81 individuals participated and 48 (60.8%) presented with depressive symptoms. Participants in the moderate stage of Parkinson's disease and women presented a higher frequency of depressive symptoms. Cognition, communication and mobility presented the highest correlation with depressive symptoms. Conclusions The participants presented a high frequency of depressive symptoms that is correlated with a decrease in mobility, communication and cognitive functions. It is recommended that the rehabilitation of elderly people with Parkinson's disease should be performed by a multidisciplinary team, whose objectives are to improve mobility, cognition and communication, which can help reduce depressive symptoms and depression in elderly people with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of training with six commercial Xbox KinectTM games on cognitive and motor aspects in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and to compare the effects with a group of paired healthy subjects. METHODS This study was a quasi-experimental, controlled trial. Eight individuals with PD (mean age 68.9 ± 7.9) and eight older adults without PD, matched by age (mean age 67.6 ± 7.3) were enrolled in the study. Ten sessions of six Xbox 360 KinectTM commercial games were performed for 5 weeks. Subjects were evaluated before and 7 and 30 days after intervention. They were assessed using Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Timed Up and Go test, Ten Meters Walking test, and Balance Berg Scale. The Freezing of Gait Questionnaire, the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale, and the Parkinson's disease Questionnaire were also applied to PD group. RESULTS Significant improvement was found for cognitive aspects measured by Montreal Cognitive Assessment and FAB in both groups but without retention on FAB in PD group. No significant improvements were found for motor aspects in none group. CONCLUSION Motor-cognitive training using Xbox KinectTM games is a feasible resource to improve executive functions in PD patients and in older healthy people.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction : Parkinson's disease is one of the fastest growing neurological disorders in the world and is considered to be predominantly a motor disorder, classified as neurodegenerative, chronic and extrapyramidal, characterized by tremors, muscular rigidity, postural balance deficit and bradykinesia. Objective : To analyze the functional changes presented by Parkinson's disease patients in the different evolutionary stages of the disease. Methods : The sample included 30 patients of both genders, aged between 51 and 75 years, with clinical diagnoses of Parkinson's disease in different evolutionary stages, undergoing physiotherapy in the Pernambuco Parkinson Association. The patients were evaluated through the Hoehn and Yahr Staging Scale and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Results : The results highlighted an increase in the presence and severity of the changes presented by the Parkinson's disease patients, according to the evolution of the stages of the disease, especially considering aspects relating to motor activity and activities of daily living, including changes related to speech, swallowing, the ability to get dressed, personal hygiene, turning in bed and arising from a chair, occurrence of falls, posture, gait, postural stability and the presence of bradykinesia/hypokinesia. Conclusion : It is believed that the classification of the evolutionary stage of patients through the Hoehn and Yahr Scale and the registration of functional change through the UPDRS are useful for the development of the physiotherapy treatment plan.
