Abstract
Objectives This systematic review aimed to investigate the fracture resistance and mode of failure of endodontically-treated permanent teeth restored with Ribbond posts (Ribbond, Inc.) compared with endodontically-treated permanent teeth restored with other post systems. Methods A comprehensive, systematic literature search was carried out using several electronic databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library. Two separate researchers were appointed to identify the studies meeting the eligibility criteria, and to perform the data extraction, risk of bias, and quality assessment. Results Twelve studies were included in the quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis was performed with 11 of the 12 included articles. The meta-analysis showed that Ribbond posts have a fracture strength less than prefabricated metal posts, cast metal posts, and prefabricated fiber posts and greater than custom e-glass fiber posts. Mode of failure analysis revealed that Ribbond posts have the most favorable non-catastrophic fractures. Conclusions Although Ribbond posts have lower fracture resistance, their favorable mode of failure makes them potentially the most biomimetic post system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This retrospective, non-interventional study aimed to evaluate the longevity and factors influencing the success of custom-fabricated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post-and-cores in endodontically treated teeth (ETT). MATERIAL AND METHODS During the observation period (2019-2022), 63 patients received 100 customized PEEK post-and-cores. Clinical outcomes were analyzed based on the following parameters: age, gender, tooth type, tooth position, proximal contacts, remaining cavity walls, antagonist contacts, and final restoration. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used for the survival probability. Log-rank tests were used to identify univariate associations between failure rates and other potential factors. Cox regression was used to assess the risk of failure and determine possible risks between the identified factors at a cut-off point p-value (0.25 in univariate analysis). RESULTS The median follow-up duration was 20.62 months, with a maximum of 40.57 months. 93 restorations were judged as successful and 99 teeth survived. The main failure type was decementation of the restoration (n = 4). The annual failure rate was 3.4%. Gender, remaining tooth structure, and final restoration were found to be correlated with success rates in the preliminary univariate analysis (Log-rank tests) to determine the association between failure rates and potential factors. Multifactorial survival analysis (Cox regression) showed that teeth with coronal walls had a significantly lower failure risk than deprived teeth, even with the ferrule effect. (HR = 0.04; 95% CI for HR = 0.01-0.29; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS PEEK post-and-cores adapt well to clinical restorative needs and offer favorable short-term clinical outcomes. The remaining cavity wall was a significant success rate predictor.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM How resin-based material and a light-activation protocol influence the mechanical properties of materials used to cement glass fiber post-and-cores in endodontically treated teeth is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of immediate or 5-minute delayed light activation on the mechanical properties of dual-polymerizing resin cements and dual-polymerizing resin-core materials compared with bulk-fill composite resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS Nine resin-based materials were tested: 4 dual-polymerizing resin-core materials, (Allcem Core; FGM, LuxaCore Z; DMG, Rebilda DC; VOCO, and (Clearfil DC Core Plus; KURARAY), 3 dual-polymerizing resin cements, (RelyX Universal; 3M ESPE, RelyX U200; 3M ESPE, and Allcem Dual; FGM), and 2 bulk-fill composite resins, (Opus Bulk Fill APS; FGM, and Filtek One Bulk Fill; 3M ESPE). The dual-polymerizing materials were light activated using both protocols. The postgel shrinkage (Shr), flexural strength (FS), elastic modulus (E), Knoop hardness (KH), degree of conversion (DC), and depth of polymerization (DoP) were measured (n=10). The data for Shr, FS, E, and DoP were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA, and for KH and DC using 2-way repeated measurement ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). RESULTS A 5-minute delay before light-activation significantly reduced Shr for all materials (P<.001). Increasing the depth significantly reduced the KH for all materials (P<.001). Bulk-fill composite resins and dual-polymerizing resin-core had higher KH values than dual-polymerizing resin cements (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Delayed 5-minute light-activation reduced postgel shrinkage and had no negative effect on mechanical properties. Dual-polymerizing resin-core materials exhibited higher KH values than dual-polymerizing resin cement and mechanical properties similar to those of bulk-fill composite resin.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the impact of battery levels in single-peak and multi-peak light-curing units (LCUs) on irradiance, and their effects on glass fiber post push-out bond strength to root dentin and the degree of conversion of dual-cure universal resin cement. METHODS AND MATERIALS Sixty bovine roots underwent endodontic treatment and were randomly distributed into 6 groups (n=10), formed by combining two LCUs (single-peak and multipeak) and three battery levels (100%, 50%, and 10%). A spectrophotometer measured irradiance (mW/ cm2) and spectral irradiance (mW/cm2/nm). Push-out bond strength (PBS) tests occurred at three root regions (cervical, middle, and apical), with optical and scanning electron microscopy for failure mode analysis. Degree of conversion (DC) was evaluated across the root regions. Data were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test. The Fisher exact test verified failure modes (α=0.05). RESULTS As multipeak LCU battery levels decreased, emitted irradiance also diminished, with notable PBS reductions in the apical thirds. Failure modes were influenced by different conditions, primarily exhibiting mixed modes. Battery levels significantly impacted DC in the multipeak LCU, particularly in the cervical region, while the single-peak LCU exhibited DC reduction at the 10% battery level in the cervical region. CONCLUSIONS Emitted irradiance, resin cement DC, and glass fiber post bond strength to root dentin may be influenced by varying cordless LCUs and battery levels.

Abstract
This in-vitro study aimed to evaluate the fracture strength (FS; N) of composite, feldspathic, and glass-ceramic computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) endocrowns after thermomechanical aging. Seventy non-carious human molars were randomly divided into seven groups, according to the CAD/CAM material used for endocrown fabrication. Intact molars without cavity preparations were used as control (n = 10). Following endodontic treatment, standardized endocrown cavities were prepared and endocrowns were fabricated using composite (Cerasmart270, CS and Grandio Blocs, GB), fired and milled zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Celtra Duo, CD), leucite-reinforced feldspar ceramic (LRF Initial, LRF), and feldspathic (Cerec Blocks, CE) materials which were luted with universal adhesive (Futurabond U; Voco) and dual-cure resin cement (Bifix QM). Following thermocycling for 20,000 cycles and 480,000 load cycles in a chewing simulator (CS-4.2, SD Mechatronik), FS was evaluated (Instron). Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's tests (p < 0.05). FS was significantly influenced by the tested material (p = 0.00). CS had the highest FS, which was not significantly different from intact molars and fired CD (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences in FS between LRF, GB, and CD, which were significantly higher than CE. Most of the failure modes of CS, CD, and GB were repairable, whereas those of CE were irreparable. All the tested materials withstood clinically relevant axial forces. Composite endocrowns exhibited more favorable fracture pattern, whereas feldspathic and leucite-reinforced feldspar ceramic endocrowns exhibited mostly irreparable fractures.

Abstract
Background/purpose Recently, an effective core build-up system for teeth with flared root canals is needed. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of foundation restorations using a composite resin core with a fiber post reinforced with a zirconia tube for the surface strain at the cervical area and the fracture load of teeth with flared root canals. Materials and methods Bovine teeth were shaped to mimic human premolars with flared root canals and restored using three types of composite resin foundation restorations with each materials described below: a fiber post (FC), a zirconia tube (ZC), a fiber post and zirconia tube (ZFC). Each specimen was restored with a zirconia crown. The surface strains of the specimens at the cervical area and fracture loads were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's honest significant difference test. Results The surface strains of Groups ZFC and ZC were significantly lower than that of Group FC in the buccal root. The fracture strengths of Groups ZFC and ZC were significantly higher than that of Group FC. The strength of Group ZFC was significantly higher than that of Group ZC. Conclusion The use of a composite resin core with a zirconia tube for the simulated premolar with flared root canals reduced surface strain at the cervical area and provided higher fracture strength compared to using a composite resin core with a fiber post. And the zirconia tubes provided even higher fracture strength when used with a fiber post.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM While the presence of a ferrule has been reported to be essential for post-and-core restorations, many extensively damaged teeth lack complete ferrules. The outcome of post-and-core restorations for these teeth remains uncertain. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to assess the outcome of cast alloy post-and-cores and knife-edged crowns for the restoration of teeth lacking complete ferrules. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 106 participants with endodontically treated teeth with 2 or fewer walls with ferrules who had received cast precious metal alloy post-and-cores along with knife-edged crowns between 2013 and 2022 were recalled for a clinical examination. The minimum follow-up time was 5 months after restoration, and restoration failure and the periodontal status difference between restored teeth and reference teeth were determined. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to obtain success curves. The influence of age, sex, jaw position, tooth type, and antagonistic dentition upon the success function was analyzed with the log-rank or Breslow test (α=.05). RESULTS A total of 100 participants with 130 restorations were studied. The success rate of the restorations was 93.85% in a mean ±standard deviation period of 48.3 ±26.1 months. The estimated 5-year cumulative success probability was 91.61%. No significant effect on the success of restorations was found regarding age, sex, jaw position, tooth type, or antagonistic dentition (P>.05). The main failure types were post debonding, root fracture, and apical periodontitis. No statistical difference in tooth mobility (Z=-1.265, P=.206) was found between the restored and the reference teeth, but the plaque index and calculus index of the restored teeth were significantly lower than of the reference teeth (Z=-7.216, P<.001; Z=-7.044, P<.001). Teeth that had received cast post-and-cores and knife-edged crowns were found to have no significant correlation with periodontal disease (χ²=1.131, P=.288) or bleeding on probing (χ²=3.436, P=.064). CONCLUSIONS The clinical outcomes for the restoration of teeth with 2 or fewer walls with ferrules using cast precious metal alloy post-and-cores and knife-edged crowns were favorable, exhibiting a high 5-year cumulative success probability and no increased periodontal health risk.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM How best to restore endodontically treated teeth is still unclear because many types of material and techniques are involved. PURPOSE The purpose of this overview of systematic reviews of clinical studies was to assess the available evidence-based literature on the influence of associated clinical factors on the clinical performance (survival, failure rate, or success) of restored endodontically treated teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception until September 27, 2021, to identify systematic reviews. Two reviewers independently screened titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, and each reviewer extracted the data of half of the included studies. A single reviewer with an independent verifier completed the quality appraisal. A descriptive analysis of the collected data was made. RESULTS A total of 36 systematic reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The factors most assessed were the type of coronal restorative technique (n=22) and type of post (n=22). The results indicated that metal and fiber posts seem to present similar clinical performance, 1-piece endodontic crowns could be a suitable restorative option, there is no evidence to confirm whether single crowns are better or worse than direct restoration, the maintenance of the coronal structure is a fundamental factor, and the ferrule effect is still a controversial topic. Most of the studies (n=30, 81%) presented a final Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) rating of "critically low." CONCLUSIONS The post type does not appear to influence the clinical performance of restored endodontically treated teeth. However, conclusive evidence to suggest how different materials or techniques for restoring coronal tooth structure affect the clinical performance of such restorations, as well as the impact of the ferrule effect, is still lacking.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the effects of using short and continuous fibres for repairing compression-induced tooth crown damage. Human teeth were used for the study. They were upper medial incisors and maxillary first premolars lost due to periodontal causes. The teeth were divided into two groups with Hahnenkratt and short glass fibres. Teeth compressive strength tests were carried out. Then micro-CT imaging of the teeth and their fractures obtained after compression was performed. The teeth restored with Hahnenkratt's glass fibre posts showed higher compressive strength than the teeth restored using the EverX Posterior material. The tooth's most weakened and sensitive point after endodontic treatment was the cervical area of the tooth. All cracks were parallel to the root canal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Even if survival of post and core (PC) itself was frequently investigated in recent literature, clinical data concerning the risk for extraction of teeth restored with PC is still scarce. Since most authors found the loss of retention of refitable post and cores as the most common cause of failure, it is impossible to draw a conclusion on tooth survival on the results of those studies. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to improve the clinical evidence on the survival of teeth treated with post and cores on a large number of cases over a long observation period. MATERIALS AND METHODS 735 patients were treated with 1053 post and cores in the observation period (2004-2022) and could be included in the study. The patient files were analysed due to the parameters: Type of covering prosthetic restoration, location, type of tooth, luting material, post and core material, bone attachment and therapist. The survival probability was assessed using Kaplan-Meyer analysis. Cox regression was used to assess possible multifactorial influences. RESULTS The overall average survival time until necessary extraction of a tooth restored with a post and core was 11.74 years. A root fracture in primary crown retained removeable partial dentures (RPDs) during the first five years was the most common reason for extraction in this study. A significant influence on the survival time of teeth restored with post and cores was found for the type of covering restoration, bone attachment, age of the patient and post and core material. CONCLUSIONS Post and core restored teeth should be avoided as abutments for primary crown retained RPDs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE If it is inevitable to utilise post and core restored teeth for primary crown retained RPDs, post and core materials with matching mechanical properties to that of dentine should be preferred.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM As the use of traditional posts has been associated with complications and failure outcomes, the introduction of novel materials and minimally invasive dentistry has shifted toward the use of composite resin post-and-core restorations for endodontically treated teeth. As a further process, to improve stress absorption environment in restored teeth, the invention of short fiber-reinforced composite resins (SFRCs) as post-and-core restorations has recently emerged. However, evidence regarding its performance is still scarce, and a synthesis of existing data is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the performance of SFRC post-and-core restorations, regarding fracture resistance and failure mode and considering both cyclic and static loading. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search in 5 databases was conducted up to August 2022, and the protocol of the study was registered a priori. The search terms included "fiber reinforced composite," "core build-up," and "post." Studies were considered if they compared SFRC restorations with other types of conventional posts and teeth restored using bulk fill composite resin. The internal validity of the studies was assessed by using a custom-made risk of bias tool. RESULTS A total of 1271 records were identified, of which 13 were considered for full-text assessment. Eight were ultimately included, all being in vitro studies, and 7 of them were deemed eligible for quantitative syntheses. The results varied considerably across studies with divergent fracture resistance values and percentages of catastrophic failure being reported. Standard depth (6 mm) SFRCs presented fewer repetitions until fracture on average, compared with the individually made FRCs (3 studies: mean difference (MD): -4062; 95% CI: -6148, -1975; P<.001) under cyclic loading. Under static loading, SFRCs (standard depth) presented a nearly 300 N lower fracture force compared with that of intact teeth, (3 studies: MD: -297; 95%CI: -378, -216; P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Evidence on the laboratory fracture and failure performance of SFRCs is limited, and future studies should incorporate more standardized experimental conditions, as well as SFRCs with limited sacrifice of tooth substrate within the root canal of endodontically treated teeth.

Abstract
Objectives Since one-third of persons suffer a dental trauma, treatment of anterior teeth using post and core (PC) is becoming important. In teeth with extensive destruction, cast PC (CPC) remain the "gold standard", even though they lead to aesthetic impairment and have a mismatching elastic modulus to that of dentin. Prefabricated fibre-reinforced posts have elastic modulus similar to that of dentin but the accuracy of fit and mechanical stability are worse. This study was aimed to evaluate the deviation and mechanical performance of fibre-reinforced CAD/CAM PC (FRPC) fabricated in a fully digital chairside workflow, compared to those of CPC. Methods On 30 teeth, a PC preparation was conducted, and a conventional and digital post impression were taken with an intraoral scanner. Fifteen teeth each were treated with CPC and FRPC, respectively. The deviation was evaluated by superimposing the datasets of the digitalised stone models and digital post impressions. Decementation and root fracture during chewing simulation were analysed by microscopy and X-ray. Statistical analysis was performed by pairwise comparison and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results The median deviation for the "coronal", "middle" and "apical" were 14.5, 18.0 and 113.7 μm, respectively. The pairwise comparison for "coronal"/"middle" showed no significance (p = 0.465), whereas that for "coronal"/"apical" and "middle"/"apical" showed highly significant differences (p < 0.001). After chewing simulation, five decementations and two root fractures were detected for CPC. For FRPC, neither decementation nor root fracture were documented. Significance Within the limitations of this study, FRPC performed significantly better than CPC.

Abstract
To evaluate the feasibility of using a milled polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post and core in endodontically treated teeth with or without a ferrule. Sixty bovine tooth roots were endodontically treated followed by cementation of intraradicular retainers (IR), according to each experimental group: a) non-ferrule glass fiber post (f0FP); b) 2-mm-ferrule glass fiber post (f2FP); c) non-ferrule resized glass fiber post (f0PR); d) 2-mm-ferrule resized glass fiber post (f2PR); e) non-ferrule PEEK post and core (f0PPC); and f) 2-mm-ferrule PEEK post and core (f2PPC). Metal crowns were made and cemented. A periodontal ligament was simulated using polyether. A force was applied to the palatine portion of each sample at 45°, until fracture. Fracture resistance data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Three-dimensional digital models were developed to calculate the tensions formed in the root using finite element analysis. Models of glass fiber posts and PEEK posts and cores were evaluated with or without a ferrule. The results were analyzed by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The type of IR was not influenced by fracture strength (p = 0.243). There were significant statistical differences among the remaining factors. Ferrule groups had greater fracture resistance, and the failure mode of teeth with a ferrule was more catastrophic than the non-ferrule group. A ferrule increases fracture resistance and influences failure mode; the PEEK post and core did not modify the biomechanics of endodontically treated teeth, and resembled the glass fiber post results. The crack initiation point differed between the ferrule and non-ferrule groups.

Abstract
Implant therapy is considered a predictable, safe, and reliable rehabilitation method for edentulous patients in most clinical scenarios. Thus, there is a growing trend in the indications for implants, which seems attributable not only to their clinical success but also to arguments such as a more "simplified approach" based on convenience or the belief that dental implants are as good as natural teeth. Therefore, the objective of this critical literature review of observational studies was to discuss the evidence concerning the long-term survival rates and treatment outcomes, comparing endodontically or periodontally treated teeth with dental implants. Altogether, the evidence suggests that the decision between keeping a tooth or replacing it with an implant should carefully consider the condition of the tooth (e.g., amount of remaining tooth and degree of attachment loss and mobility), systemic disorders, and patient preference. Although observational studies revealed high success rates and long-term survival of dental implants, failures and complications are common. For this reason, attempts should be made to first save maintainable teeth over the long-term, instead of immediately replacing teeth with dental implants.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the pull-out bond strength (PBS) of endodontically treated anterior teeth that had been restored with monolithic zirconia endocrowns using different extension depths (EDs) and post-and-core crowns after chewing simulation. METHODS Thirty-six maxillary central teeth were used (n = 12). Group I: Glass fiber post-and-core crown, Group II: Endocrown with 3-mm EDs, Group III: Endocrown with 5-mm EDs. Restorations were fabricated from monolithic zirconia blocks using a CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) device. For cementation, conventional resin luting agent (Multilink N) was used. All samples were aged with a chewing simulator and PBS tests were conducted at a speed of 1 mm/min using an electromechanical servo universal testing machine. The values were recorded in MPa by dividing the failure load by the bonding area. One-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Tukey test were used for statistical analysis (P = 0.05). RESULTS Group III demonstrated significantly greater PBS values than Groups I and II (P = 0.001). No significant difference was found between Groups I and II (P = 0.072). CONCLUSION Increasing the ED of an endocrown influences the PBS of endodontically treated anterior teeth restored with monolithic zirconia endocrowns.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the surface strain at the cervical area of endodontically treated molars with a large pulp chamber restored using a composite resin core with three different types of core build-up systems. METHODS Reproduction models of human mandibular molars with prepared post spaces were used in this study. Roots duplicated with a composite resin were used as the experimental teeth. Three types of core build-up systems were used: composite resin core(RC), composite resin core with fiber posts (FC), and composite resin core with a prefabricated zirconia tube (ZC). Each group comprised eight specimens. Crowns made of yttria partially stabilized zirconia were cemented with dual-cure resin cement. Four strain gauges were attached to the surfaces of each specimen: the cervical area of the root and crown, on the buccal and lingual sides. The surface strain at each cervical area was measured using a static loading test and statistically analyzed. RESULTS In the case of static loading to the buccal cusp inner slope, ZC showed a significantly lower strain than RC in the crown on the buccal side and in the root and FC in the root. In the central fossa, ZC showed a significantly lower strain than FC in the root on the lingual side. CONCLUSIONS The prefabricated zirconia tube reduced the surface strain at the cervical area of the buccal/lingual root in molars; however, the effect was small in the cervical area of the crown.

Abstract
This laboratory study aimed to measure the push-out bond strength of individually formed fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post luted with flowable short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) and to evaluate the influence of post coating with light-cured adhesive. Post spaces (Ø 1.7 mm) were drilled into 20 single-rooted decoronated premolar teeth. Post spaces were etched and treated with light-cured universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond). Individually formed FRC posts (Ø 1.5 mm, everStick) were luted either with light-cured SFRC (everX Flow) or conventional particulate-filled (PFC) dual-cure luting cement (G-CEM LinkForce). Half of the posts from each group were treated with dimethacrylate adhesive resin (Stick Resin) for 5 min before luting. After storage in water for two days, the roots were sectioned into 2 mm thick disks (n = 10/per group). Then, a push-out test-setup was used in a universal testing machine to measure the bond strength between post and dentin. The interface between post and SFRC was inspected using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance ANOVA (p = .05). Higher bond strength values (p < .05) were obtained when flowable SFRC was used as a post luting material. Resin coating of a post showed no significant effect (p > .05) on bond strength values. Light microscope images showed the ability of discontinuous short fibers in SFRC to penetrate into FRC posts. The use of flowable SFRC as luting material with individually formed FRC posts proved to be a promising method to improve the interface adhesion.

Abstract
This study assessed the bond strength of prefabricated post systems at different root levels of endodontically treated teeth. One-rooted human premolars (N = 70; n = 10) were cut to 2 mm above the cement-enamel junction. Root canals were treated and randomly assigned to one of the seven post systems: T: Titanium (Mooser), ZrO: Zirconia (Cosmopost), G: Fiber (FRC Postec Plus), E1: Fiber (Direct) (Everstick post), E2: Fiber (Indirect) (Everstick post), PP: Fiber (PinPost), and LP: Injectable Resin/Fiber composite (EverX Posterior). All posts were luted using a resin cement (Variolink II), and the roots were sectioned at the coronal, middle, and apical root levels. Push-out tests were performed in the Universal Testing Machine (0.5 mm/min). Data (MPa) were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests (α = 0.05). The results showed that the bond strength (mean ± SD) of E2 posts were highest (5.3 ± 2.7) followed by PP (4.1 ± 2.0); G (4.0 ± 1.6); LP (2.6 ± 1.9): T (2.2 ± 1.5) and ZrO (1.9 ± 1.0) posts systems. No significant differences were found in bond strength of all post systems. The bond strength in the coronal root level was the highest with 3.6 ± 2.2 MPa. The bond strength of FRC post systems was significantly higher than those of rigid posts of titanium or ZrO2. Bond strength results were the highest in the coronal root level for all tested post systems but did not differ significantly from the other two root levels.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser irrigation on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to the root dentine. Sixty extracted human mandibular first premolars were collected and decoronated. The residual roots received endodontic treatment. The treated roots were randomly divided into three groups according to different irrigation protocols: group LAI (Er:YAG laser–activated irrigation), group PUI (passive ultrasonic irrigation, positive control), and group CSI (conventional syringe irrigation, negative control) (n = 20). Each group was divided into two subgroups, either total-etching modes or self-etching modes (n = 10). After fiber post restoration, all roots were sectioned into seven 1.0-mm-thick slices. The slices received a push-out test by a universal test machine. The resin tag on the segments’ bonding interfaces was observed by scanning electron microscope. There were significant differences in the effects of the irrigation method, bonding modes, and root regions on the push-out bond strength among the groups (p < 0.05). The specimens with Er:YAG laser–activated irrigation and self-etching mode showed significantly the highest bonding strength (p < 0.001). The lengths and densities of resin tags in group PUI or group LAI with self-etching modes were longer than those in group CSI with total-etching modes. The laser-activated irrigation with self-etching modes improved the bond strength of fiber post to root dentine compared to the passive ultrasonic irrigation or conventional syringe irrigation with total or self-etching modes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The retrospective survival study (1995-2004) by Balkenhol et al.[1] led to changes in the decision-making process for treatment with post and cores (special focus on the covering prosthetic restoration while deciding for treatment with post and cores, high primary friction at the try-in stage for conventional cementation, only indirect fabrication technique, no semi-precious alloy) in our clinic. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of these changes on the survival probability. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the observation period (2004-2020) 653 patients received in total 953 post and cores. The patient files were analysed due to the parameters: Type of covering prosthetic restoration, location, type of tooth, luting material, post and core material, bone attachment, therapist and cause of failure. According to the previous study the survival probability was assessed using Kaplan-Meyer analysis. Cox regression was used to assess the risk of failure and identify possible covariates. RESULTS The average survival time of the post and cores was 10.9 years. The cumulative failure rate was 28.2%. A significant influence on the survival time (Kaplan-Meyer analysis) could be found for the parameters: Type of covering prosthetic restoration, location, type of tooth, post and core material and bone attachment. The multifactorial survival analysis (Cox regression) showed a significant influence of the age of the patient at the time of fitting the post, the type of covering prosthetic restoration and the bone attachment. CONCLUSIONS The changes in the decision-making process did not lead to a better survival probability. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The conclusions stated in the previous study were not strict enough. Treatments with post and cores should be critically scrutinized on the basis of covering prosthetic restoration and bone attachment. Post and cores under primary crown retained RPDs should be avoided because of the bad survival probability.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the microshear bond strength (μ-SBS) between resin-based cements and core build-up materials after water storage.
Material and Methods Cylinders (1x1 mm) of conventional dual-cure resin cement (RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE), universal dual-cure resin cement (RelyX Ultimate, 3M ESPE) or self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE) were adhered to disks (6x2 mm) made with commercial core build-up materials (Bis-Core, Bisco or LuxaCore Z, DMG) or conventional nanocomposite resin (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE). The specimens (n=10) were submitted to μ-SBS test using a universal testing machine and fracture pattern analysis at 48 hours or after 9 months of water storage. The data were evaluated by three-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey’s test (α=0.05).
Results After 48 hours, regardless of the resin-based cement used, the μ-SBS to the conventional resin composite (Filtek Z350 XT) was greater compared to other materials. However, after 9 months, there was a statistically significant decrease in μ-SBS values between the conventional resin composite and evaluated luting agents. The μ-SBS values of core build-up commercial materials (Bis-Core and LuxaCore Z) did not change over time. Regardless of the composite used and storage time, there was no statistically significant difference between the resin-based cements. After 48 h, the most prevalent failure was mixed for all groups. However, after 9 months, the core build-up materials showed a predominantly mixed fracture pattern whereas the resin composite presented an adhesive pattern.
Conclusions Commercial core build-up materials achieved stable bonding performance with resin-based cements over time. Key words:Composite resins, resin cement, dental restoration failure.

Abstract
A completely digital workflow is described for the immediate restoration of a fractured fiber post with a digitally prefabricated definitive restoration using 3-dimensionally printed guides. The geometric morphology and axis of the root canal were digitally determined by using cone beam computed tomography to localize the 3-dimensional position of the fractured fiber post. A virtual drill modeled on the shape of the fractured post was fabricated and customized for removal of the post by using a guide to facilitate the intraoral transfer of the drilling procedure. A titanium post-and-core and crown had been virtually predesigned and fabricated before the procedure, and 2 digital guides were designed for their placement. All guides were 3-dimensionally printed. By following this workflow, the removal of the fractured fiber post and immediate definitive restoration were completed in 1 visit, facilitating a more efficient, predictable, and straightforward treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This prospective study assessed the effect of post type used to restore endodontically treated teeth in the onset, progression, and remission of periapical lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and forty teeth (92 patients) were endodontically treated and received a glass fiber post or a cast metal post and a final restoration at a University Clinic by undergraduate students. All patients were followed up for a mean period of 5.1 ± 2.2 years. Periapical Index (PAI) was used for endodontic assessment. Two calibrated and blind examiners assessed the radiographs. The longevity of the endodontic treatment was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier statistics. RESULTS Of the included teeth, 67.1% received glass fiber posts while 32.9% received cast metal posts. There were 4 endodontic failures, two glass fiber posts with a PAI = 3 in the baseline and PAI = 4 in the last follow-up, and one PAI = 4 in baseline and last follow-up. One cast metal post-failure was PAI = 4 in the baseline and the last follow-up. After 9.4 years, the overall success rate of the endodontic treatment was 97.1% (p = 0.7). CONCLUSIONS The tested posts presented similar endodontic healing. Precautions taken during endodontic therapy, post cementation, and final restoration are more likely to be responsible for the success of endodontic treatment rather than a specific type of post. Clinical relevance The type of post is not related to the success of the endodontic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess if the presence of an endodontic post may increase the fracture resistance of endodontically-treated maxillary premolars directly restored with composite. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature search according to the PRISMA statement was conducted to assess in vitro studies including endodontically-treated maxillary premolars, restored with different type of posts supporting direct composite reconstructions. Two groups of meta-analyses were performed using fixed effects model and additional Trial Sequential Analysis (TSA) was carried out. Moreover, risk of bias was conducted and quality of evidence for any performed meta-analysis was assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS Twenty-four articles met the inclusion criteria and 13 studies also underwent quantitative evaluation. Fracture resistance of endodontically-treated premolars restored with fiber posts was significantly less than sound teeth (p value: < 0.00001), however endodontically-treated premolars with a fiber post provided an increase in fracture resistance when compared to equivalent teeth restored without post (p value: 0.003). TSA revealed high power of both meta-analyses. Moderate risk of bias was reported in 23/24 studies; only 1 study showed high risk of bias. GRADE system showed moderate strength of evidence due to the presence of a study with high risk of bias and to wide confidence intervals. SIGNIFICANCE Within the limitation of the present systematic review and meta-analysis, it can be concluded that endodontically-treated maxillary premolars restored with a fiber post and direct composite restoration demonstrated increased fracture resistance when compared to equivalent teeth without post.

834 Jordanian general dentists, prosthodontists and endodontists were invited to participate in a validated online survey with a 62% participation rate. Respondents were invited to answer 24 questions about their preferences for techniques and materials they use to restore RFT. The questions aimed at exploring restorative strategies commonly employed by Jordanian dentists when managing root filled teeth with extensive loss of tooth structure.
Results:
A minority of dentists consider direct resin restoration as the sole restoration for RFT with extensive loss of tooth structure. Full coverage metal-ceramic and all-ceramic crowns are more popular than endocrowns when restoring RFT with indirect restoration. Fiber posts are the most popular type of posts, followed by prefabricated metal posts. Glass ionomer is the most preferred cement for luting metal posts, while conventional dual resin cement with separate etch and rinse bonding strategy is the most employed when bonding fiber posts. The majority of dentists tend not to pretreat fiber posts. Loss of post/core retention or fracture of coronal tooth structure are the two most common reasons observed by dentists when RFT fail.
Conclusion:
Use of post and core is still preferred over more conservative approaches when restoring RFT with extensive loss of coronal tooth structure. Longevity of restorations can be enhanced by training practicing dentists on evidence-based adhesive strategies.

Abstract
Background/purpose The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate fatigue resistance of dental fixtures in three different types of fixture/abutment finishing line. Materials and methods Transmucosal dental implants, with or without ferrulized neck, underwent fatigue tests (static and dynamic load) using the following standard protocol: UNI EN ISO 14801:2016. Two types of loading devices (screw- or cement-retained restoration) were also tested, and fatigue cycle tests were run to failure. Data of static and dynamic load tests were analyzed by proper statistical methods. Results Following standard protocol for fatigue testing, the ILC type (Implant Level with ferrulized neck and cement-retained crown) showed a non-significant but higher Ultimate Failure Load (UFL = 445.7 N) compared to AL type (Abutment Level without ferrule effect, 421.6 N) and ILS type (Implant Level with ferrulized neck and Screw-retained crown, 362.8 N). No fracture of the titanium-base was registered in the tested specimens during the static loadings. Permanent deformations of the materials were observed. Conclusion The number of cycles to either fracture or deformation (higher than 4 mm) occurring during fatigue tests showed that the stress rupture curve of the materials in group ILS appeared to be significantly different from those of the ILC and AL groups (p-values < 0.01): much higher life of one-half order of magnitude.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess fracture resistance, failure mode and stress concentration of a modified endocrown preparation design, under axial and lateral forces. Materials and Methods Forty lower molars were divided into two groups (n = 20) and were restored with lithium disilicate glass-ceramic endocrowns following 2 preparation designs: Conventional, with circumferential butt margin 2 mm above the cemento–enamel junction; and Modified, by adding 2 grooves on the mesial side of the vestibular dentinal wall and on the distal side of the lingual dentinal wall. After cementation and thermomechanical cycling loading, half of the samples (n = 10) from each group were loaded axially and the other half (n = 10) was loaded laterally. Fracture resistance and failure modes were observed and the finite element analysis (FEA) was used to identify the stress concentration. Two-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests (α = 0.05) were used for in vitro data analyzes. Results Fracture resistance showed a statistically significant difference between conventional and modified preparations (p < .001), and between axial and lateral loadings (p < .001). Conventional preparation recorded 2914 N under axial loading and 1516 N under lateral loading, while modified preparation recorded 3329 N under axial loading and 1871 N under lateral loading. FEA showed that retention grooves have reduced the stress concentration under both loads for the tooth and the restoration. Conclusion Modified endocrown design showed higher fracture resistance than conventional endocrown. Lateral loading displayed a high percentage of severe fracture but under higher load to failure than the values reported for normal masticatory forces.

Abstract
The Brazilian Dental Journal (BDJ) was officially launched in 1990, stimulated by the courage and boldness of researchers dedicated to teaching and research in dentistry. The journal was conceived in a worldwide coverage and universal language to allow publication of the results of Brazilian studies, which otherwise would not be accessible to the scientific dental community. In the year we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of BDJ, this article presents a brief overview of Brazilian dental research and a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in this journal as a contribution to our readers and fellow researchers. The purpose was to identify the mot frequent categories of study, the most published areas of dentistry and BDJ's top 50 most-cited articles in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. A search was performed on all BDJ online issues published from 1990 to 2019. In this period, BDJ published 1,710 articles. Based on their distribution by category of study, 557 articles were in the basic research/dental materials area, 527 in the basic research/biology area and 280 in the clinical research area. Eight articles were cited more than 100 times in the Scopus database and 266 times in the Google Scholar database. Endodontics was the most published area. This overview of BDJ production over those 30 years allows establishing a profile of the characteristics, impact and trends of the published studies, as well as the journal's contribution to the top 50 most-cited articles in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases.

Abstract
PEEK has been used in many dental applications except intra-radicular post. The aim of this study is to test polyetheretherketone (PEEK) as a dental post material through tensile bond strength (TBS) and surface roughness (SR), and to compare it with glass-fiber and cast-metal posts. Thus, 60 human maxillary central incisors with a single root were endodontically treated and divided into three groups (n = 20) according to the type of post (Group P: PEEK, Group F: Glass-fiber, Group M: Cast-metal). Appropriate surface treatment was employed for each group and SR was determined by a three-dimensional non-contact profilometer before cementation. All posts were luted to the canal dentin using self-etch resin cement (Panavia F2.0). Pull-out test was performed on a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed until failure, and TBS were calculated. One-way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD, and Pearson chi-squared tests were performed for statistical analyses (α = 0.05). According to the results, group F demonstrated the highest SR (2.93 ± 0.18 µm) and lowest TBS values (10.05 ± 0.53 MPa), while group P exhibited lowest SR (1.37 ± 0.11 µm) and highest TBS values (14.33 ± 0.58 MPa) (p < 0.001). No significant differences in failure modes were identified among groups, mostly adhesive (p = 0.243). As conclusion, PEEK may be a reliable and contemporary option for dental post systems when used with appropriate surface treatment and luting agent. This high-performance polymer may be a novel candidate as a contemporary dental post system due to its superior mechanical, chemical, thermal, and esthetical properties with low risk of fracture.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the survival rate in restored teeth with three different types of retainers prior to the fixing of crowns with zirconia through this retrospective clinical study. It is unclear how the type of post and core rehabilitation, and type of resin cement affect the longevity of teeth restored with crowns. Methods In a private clinic, a total of 101 retainers installed by the same professional between June 2008 and January 2018, with an average time of 58.2 months (4.8 years), were analyzed regarding the following factors: survival, cement and failure type. Three types of retainers were used according to the indications found in the literature: filling with Z250 light-cured composite resin, 22 elements; fiberglass post with Z250 light-cured composite resin, 45 elements; and cast metallic core in silver-tin alloy, 34 elements. The retainers were cemented with chemically cured cement, U100, U200, or Panavia F. Results Data were subjected to Kaplan-Meier analysis (p=0.495). Although the study presented several limitations, no significant differences were observed in the success rates between the types of intra-radicular retainers and the type of cement. The success rates were as follows: metal core, 97.1%; fiberglass post, 95.6%; and filling, 100%. On average, failures occurred at 48.4 months. Conclusion In view of the results, it is possible to conclude that the different retainers evaluated have similar survival rates. ![]()

Abstract
Aim: Cast post and core (CPC) is the main used post type; however, the biomechanical behavior of CPCs adhesively luted to the dentin is still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance (FR) and fracture modes of teeth restored with CPCs luted with zinc-phosphate (ZP) or resin-based self-adhesive (SA) cements, as well as the influence of the coronal remnant. Methods: For that, 24 human premolars were divided into four groups according to the cement (ZP or SA) and coronal remnant (with or without 2mm). FR was tested in a universal machine and data analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (α=.05). Fracture modes were classified according to the degree of dental destruction. Results: The results showed that there was no difference in FR (p=.352); however, teeth without ferrule presented more irreparable fractures, specially in the ZP group. Conclusion: All in all, self-adhesion of CPCs does not enhance fracture resistance, however it reduces the number of irreparable fractures, compared to ZP cement.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The association between tooth type, location in the dental arch, and selection of a post-and-core system for endodontically treated teeth is unclear. Information on the influence of these parameters on the failure rate of teeth treated with post-and-core restorations is needed. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the available evidence on the failure rates of anterior and posterior teeth treated with post-and-core restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS A search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database, Brazilian Library in Dentistry, Cochrane Library, and Gray literature for randomized clinical trials comparing the failure rates of anterior and posterior teeth treated with post-and-core restorations. The risk of bias tool from the Cochrane Collaboration was used for quality assessment of the studies. RESULTS The search strategy identified 2526 articles, and 6 studies were included in the meta-analysis. No difference in the failure rate of post-and-core restorations placed in anterior and posterior teeth was found in most studies. The risk ratio for anterior versus posterior teeth was 1.06 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.69-1.64; P=.79). The risk ratio for incisors versus canines was 3.08 (95% CI, 0.56-17.04; P=.20) and that for premolars versus molars was 0.45 (95% CI, 0.12-1.74; P=.25). The risk ratio for prefabricated glass fiber posts on anterior versus posterior teeth was 1.13 (95% CI, 0.61-2.09; P=.70) and that for metal posts was 1.10 (95% CI, 0.64-1.91; P=.72). CONCLUSIONS The failure rates in anterior and posterior teeth treated with post-and-core restorations were similar at short- to medium-term follow-up. More well-designed clinical trials comparing the survival and failure rates of anterior and posterior teeth treated with post-and-core restorations with longer follow-up times are needed.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Recent resin-based and ceramic-based computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials have been used to restore endodontically treated teeth. Adaptation of the restoration is important for clinical success, but studies evaluating the effect of these materials on the adaptation of endocrowns are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of resin-based and ceramic-based materials on the marginal and internal adaptation of endocrowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty mandibular molars were divided into 4 groups (n=10); each group was restored with a different CAD-CAM material: group C: hybrid nanoceramic (Cerasmart; GC Corp), group T: fiber-composite material (Trilor; Bioloren Srl), group E: lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG), and group V: zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic (Vita Suprinity; VITA Zahnfabrik GmbH). A digital scan was made with an intraoral digital scanner (TRIOS 3; 3Shape A/S), and endocrowns were milled with a 5-axis milling machine (Coritec 250i; imes-icore GmbH). The replica technique and a stereomicroscope (×70) were used to measure the marginal and internal adaptation of the endocrowns at 32 points. All data were statistically analyzed using 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference test (α=.05). RESULTS Statistical tests showed significant differences among the tested groups (P<.001). The resin-based groups displayed larger discrepancies than the ceramic-based groups. The resin-based groups showed a mean marginal gap larger than the mean internal gap C (P=.009), T (P<.001), whereas the ceramic-based groups showed similar gaps, V (P=.396), E (P=.936). The largest gap was observed at the pulpal floor (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS All materials had clinically acceptable internal and marginal gaps (≤150 μm), except for the marginal gap of the Trilor group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Numerous factors may influence the survival/success of post-retained restorations of endodontically treated teeth (ETT). The aim of this review was to assess the influence of the number of remaining coronal walls, the use or disuse of posts, and their type on the clinical performance of these restorations. METHODS Randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials for ETT restored with a combination of post/crown or no post/crown were searched for in MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Two authors independently reviewed all identified titles and abstracts for eligibility. Tables were generated to summarize the included studies, and reports of randomized trials were assessed for bias using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. RESULTS Nine articles were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. Teeth without ferrule presented the highest values of variation of success/survival (0%-97%), whereas teeth with remaining coronal walls (1, 2, 3, or 4 walls with ferrule) presented lower variation. The use of posts with a high elastic modulus success/survival ranged between 71.8% and 100%, whereas posts with a low elastic modulus ranged between 28.5% and 100%. The survival of crowns without posts varied between 0% and 100%. The poor performance of posts with a low elastic modulus and without posts was associated with the absence of ferrule and the preservation of only 1 coronal wall. CONCLUSIONS The restoration of ETT should focus on the maintenance of the coronal structure. Until more studies with longer follow-up periods are available, posts with a high elastic modulus appear to present with better performance when restoring ETT with no ferrule.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objective: To evaluate the masking ability and translucency of monolithic and bilayer CAD-CAM ceramic structures.
Methods: Discs of high translucency (HT) and low translucency (LT) lithium disilicate–based ceramic (IPS e.max CAD) with different thicknesses (0.7, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm) were evaluated as a monolithic structure or combined (bilayer) with a 0.5-mm-thick zirconia framework (IPS e.max ZirCAD). The masking ability and translucency were calculated based on CIE L*a*b* color coordinates measured with a spectrophotometer (SP60, X-Rite). The translucency parameter (TP) was calculated using color coordinates measured over standard white-and-black backgrounds. The masking ability was calculated by CIEDE2000 color difference metric (ΔE00) for each specimen measured over a tooth-colored substrate (shade A2) compared to three darker backgrounds (shade C4 and two metal substrates). Confidence intervals (CI) for the means (95% CI) were calculated for TP and ΔE00. The Pearson correlation between ΔE00 and TP was investigated for monolithic and bilayer structures over all backgrounds.
Results: The thinner the lithium disilicate layer, the greater the translucency and the higher the ΔE00 values. The effect of ceramic thickness on both translucency and masking ability was more pronounced for the monolithic structures. In addition, monolayers always presented a greater color variation than their bilayer counterparts. The metallic background produced greater ΔE00 than the C4-shaded substrate.
Conclusion: Monolithic veneers were able to mask C4-shaded background but did not mask metallic backgrounds. Bilayer structures showed greater shade masking ability than monolithic structures.

Abstract
Abstract Operative procedural errors must be well analyzed in order to avoid influence negatively the root canal treatment (RCT) prognosis. The successful RCT prevents tooth loss and avoids pain and apical periodontitis. This review aimed to categorize common operative procedure errors and clinical factors associated with RCT. Based on this, will be approached common errors of procedures within the clinical operative sequence: endodontic treatment planning, pulp and periapical disease diagnosis, anaesthesia, access cavity preparation, isolation with rubber dam, root canal preparation, root canal filling and retreatment, restoration of endodontically treated teeth, postoperative pain, follow up of endodontically treated teeth. The professional must remind that in each phase of RCT an operative error may have adverse implication on prognosis, and these errors characterize risk factors to failure. The knowledge of probable operative procedural errors and its consequences are essentials to avoid future problems to the tooth health.

Abstract
This retrospective study evaluated the clinical outcome of 139 teeth restored with carbon fiber posts after 3 years of placement, considering the amount of remaining dentin as the main variable. Eighty-one patients received the fiber posts within a period of 16 months and were recalled after 3 years. The tooth type, amount of remaining dentin, and prosthetic crown material were evaluated. No loss of post or core retention was detected after 3 years of follow up. During the observed time, root or post fracture and secondary caries were not recorded. Only one failure concerning endodontic treatment was detected. The amount of remaining dentin was not an important characteristic in the restorative failure of endodontically treated teeth restored with carbon fiber posts within 3 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article aims to present a fractographic analysis of an anterior tooth restored with a glass fiber post with parallel fiber arrangement, taking into account force vectors, finite element analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS A patient presented at the Faculty of Dentistry (Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil) with an endodontically treated tooth (ETT), a lateral incisor that had a restorable fracture. The treatment was performed, and the fractured piece was analyzed using stereomicroscopy, SEM, and finite element analysis. RESULTS The absence of remaining coronal tooth structure might have been the main factor for the clinical failure. We observed different stresses actuating in an ETT restored with a fiber post as well as their relationship with the ultimate fracture. Tensile, compression, and shear stresses presented at different levels inside the restored tooth. Tensile and compressive stresses acted together and were at a maximum in the outer portions and a minimum in the inner portions. In contrast, shear stresses acted concomitantly with tensile and compressive stresses. Shear was higher in the inner portions (center of the post), and lower in the outer portions. This was confirmed by finite element analysis. The SEM analysis showed tensile and compression areas in the fiber post (exposed fibers=tensile areas=lingual surface; nonexposed fibers=compression areas=buccal surface) and shear areas inside the post (scallops and hackle lines). Stereomicroscopic analysis showed brown stains in the crown/root interface, indicating the presence of microleakage (tensile area=lingual surface). CONCLUSION We concluded that glass fiber posts with parallel fibers (0°), when restoring anterior teeth, present a greater fracture potential by shear stress because parallel fibers are not mechanically resistant to support oblique occlusal loads. Factors such as the presence of remaining coronal tooth structure and occlusal stability assist in the biomechanical equilibrium of stresses that act upon anterior teeth.

Abstract
Despite several advantages associated with pre-fabricated glass-fiber posts, the coronal portion of these posts must be cut to allow their use in various clinical situations. However, cutting the cemented post can generate stress on the bonding interface and affect the bond strength. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect the of fiber post cutting on the bond strength of root canals. Sixty bovine incisor roots were included in resin cylinders with simulated periodontal ligaments. Glass-fiber posts were luted using regular resin cement RelyX ARC (3M ESPE) or self-adhesive cement RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE). The posts were cut prior to cementation, immediately after luting or after building up the core (n=10). After storage for 24 h, the samples were cut and subject to push-out testing using a mechanical testing machine (EMIC DL 2000). Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (resin cement x moment of post cutting) and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The moment of fiber post cutting did not affect the bond strength when Unicem was used. However, the bond strength was reduced when ARC was used and when the post was cut immediately. In conclusion, the moment of fiber post cutting may affect the retention of root canal posts when a regular resin cement is used.

Abstract
This study assessed marginal leakage and fracture resistance of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) fabricated ceramic crowns with intracoronal extensions into the pulp chambers of endodontically treated teeth (endocrowns) using either feldspathic porcelain (CEREC Blocks [CB], Sirona Dental Systems GmbH, Bensheim, Germany), lithium disilicate (e.max [EX], Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), or resin nanoceramic (Lava Ultimate [LU], 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA).). Thirty extracted human permanent maxillary molars were endodontically treated. Standardized preparations were done with 2-mm intracoronal extensions of the endocrowns into the pulp chamber. Teeth were divided into three groups (n=10); each group was restored with standardized CAD/CAM fabricated endocrowns using one of the three tested materials. After cementation with resin cement, specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for one week, subjected to thermocycling, and immersed in a 5% methylene-blue dye solution for 24 hours. A compressive load was applied at 35 degrees to long axis of the teeth using a universal testing machine until failure. Failure load was recorded, and specimens were examined under a stereomicroscope for modes of failure and microleakage. Results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc multiple comparison tests (α=0.05). LU showed significantly (p<0.05) higher fracture resistance and more favorable fracture mode (ie, fracture of the endocrown without fracture of tooth) as well as higher dye penetration than CB and EX. In conclusion, although using resin nanoceramic blocks for fabrication of endocrowns may result in better fracture resistance and a more favorable fracture mode than other investigated ceramic blocks, more microleakage may be expected with this material.
