Exclusion, Violence and the Body: The Case of a Young Man with Disability due to Gunshot Wound

The present text presents partial results of the research "Young people with disability due to gunshot wounds: an exploratory study from the Memorialistic Narratives", which aimed to problematize the effects of violence and criminality in the juvenile sphere by investigating, beyond the increase in mortality and incarceration rates, the transformation of these young people into people with disabilities, specifically, people in wheelchairs. To achieve this goal, we used as a method the Memorialistic Narratives and worked on the categories of exclusion, violence and a body marked by trauma. We will reflect on the case of Guilherme, a poor, marginalized young man with a disability and a wheelchair user due to a gunshot wound. The choice for his case relates to the different forms that violence can assume, influencing lives and leaving marks, besides, we believe that his life story can contribute to qualifying psychology's look at young people in contexts of violence.

Disability prevention, detection and assistance in primary health care services in the state of São Paulo, Brazil

The objective of this study was to assess the performance of primary health care (PHC) services for disability prevention, detection and assistance in the state of São Paulo. The study included 2739 health services, from 514 municipalities. 128 organizational quality indicators of the QualiAB instrument referring to the evaluative dimension "Attention to disability in primary health care services". The association of health care performance score of each domain with independent variables, health assessment, and support network were tested using of multiple linear regression. The performance percentage was 61.6% for all domains, 73.6% for structure (inputs and human resources), 68.7% for qualification of prenatal care, 56.1% for qualification of child health care, 55.8% for prevention of disabilities related to chronic conditions, and 53.9% for attention to people with disabilities and caregivers. There was a significant association with variables related to the type of service and participation in service evaluations. PHC services still perform incipient actions for the prevention, surveillance and diagnosis of disabilities as well as for comprehensive care for people with disabilities.

Processos Psicossociais da Aquisição de uma Deficiência

Resumo A aquisição de uma deficiência pode ter extenso impacto na vida de uma pessoa, pois ocorre, muitas vezes, sob condições traumáticas e obriga tanto a ressignificações subjetivas quanto a adaptações práticas no cotidiano. O principal objetivo do trabalho aqui descrito consistiu em compreender aspectos psicossociais do processo de aquisição de uma deficiência, considerando diversos fatores que podem interferir nestas experiências. Para a realização da pesquisa, foram entrevistadas, de forma semiestruturada, 13 pessoas que adquiriram uma deficiência física, auditiva ou visual na idade adulta, sendo os relatos analisados pelo método de análise de conteúdo. Ao se discutir as falas dos pesquisados, são traçadas algumas semelhanças e distinções entre as experiências dos participantes, buscando também tecer considerações com base na literatura acadêmico-científica sobre o tema. Observou-se que os processos psicossociais de aquisição da deficiência foram permeados tanto por sentimentos negativos, relacionados à angústia e à depressão, bem como por reações mais harmônicas e de valorização da vida, em que se relativiza a perda do membro ou da capacidade sensorial. Representando um momento marcante na vida de quem a adquire, a deficiência pode levar à aprendizagem e ao amadurecimento, à medida que o tempo após a aquisição aumenta. Entende-se que os estudos acerca da deficiência, em especial a adquirida, devem ser ampliados e aprofundados, tendo em vista que o campo de estudos sobre esta temática ainda precisa de mais contribuições a respeito.

[Compassion, pity and physical disability: the value of difference in heterogeneous relations]

Feelings of compassion and pity for physical disability are analyzed by assessing abnormal bodies in the West and interpretations of the sufferings of the Other. The State will target this body as well as wartime and industrial mutilations. In the nineteenth century, tolerance, compassion and body equality were required, becoming imbued with hierarchizing representations and practices of bodily perfection submitting deviations to intervention. Such ambiguities mobilize sentiments at the confluence of the individual/collective and the natural/socio-cultural and can transmute into virtue or technology of power. The exegesis of suffering may result in generalizations and platitudes whereas valorizing the singular and occult sides of experience favors universalization of human dignity in heterogeneous relations.

[Worker with physical disability: weaknesses and disorders self referred]

This study aimed to investigate weaknesses and disorders experienced by workers with physical disabilities in their work environment. It is a descriptive case study, with qualitative approach. Data were collected from eight workers with physical disabilities and analyzed using thematic analysis. Most of the subjects surveyed reported having encountered difficulties in finding employment and mentioned the prejudice and obstacles to accessibility. Most of them do not identify risks for disease in the workplace. People with disabilities should have knowledge about their rights and about the occupational hazards they are exposed, in order to facilitate means for consolidating a society increasingly inclusive and to promote healthy ambience. Health professionals should make a profound reflection on the subject, so that can collaborate for the healthy inclusion of people with disabilities in their jobs.
