Strategic control of cattle ticks: milk producers' perceptions

Comparison of the efficacy of different methods to apply acaricides for control of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus

The present study compared the efficacy of different methods to apply an acaricide formulation to control Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. To compare the methods, an acaricide blend containing three active ingredients (a pyrethroid and two organophosphates) was used. In experiment 1 (farm 1: Goiânia, GO, Brazil), three methods were tested: a backpack sprayer (BS), power sprayer (PS) and spray race (SR). In experiment 2 (farm 2: São José do Rio Pardo, SP, Brazil), two methods were tested: BS and PS. In both experiments, 10 cattle with similar tick burdens were used. On day 0 in both experiments, the animals were treated with the acaricide. On day +1 (only in experiment 1), +3, +7, +14, +21, +28 and +35 (only in experiment 2), tick counts were performed to determine the control efficacy. The time application, pressure (KPa), volume applied (L) and ergonomic aspects of each spraying system were also evaluated. The adult immersion test (AIT) using three different acaricide blends (combinations of pyrethroid + organophosphate) was performed to compare the susceptibility of strains of each farm. In experiment 1, all treatments significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the number of ticks on the animals, and PS resulted in the greatest acaricide efficacy since day +1. In experiment 2, both treatments (PS and BS) reduced (p < 0.05) the tick burden, and as observed in experiment 1, PS resulted in the best reduction. The application times were 4.5, 150 and 330 s, while pressures were 306.8, 4,826.3 and 220.6 KPa for SR, PS and BS, respectively. In the AIT, the efficacy values were between 99.8 and 100% for the tick strain form farm 1 (Goiânia), while for tick strain from farm 2 (São José do Rio Pardo), the efficacy was between 67.2 and 80.9%. We conclude that the sprayer methods chosen influences the efficacy of the acaricide. All sprayer methods were efficient for acaricide application; the best efficacy was obtained using the PS, while the SR resulted in good efficacy and lower application time. The strain from farm 2 was less susceptible to all acaricides tested.

Acaricidal activity of carvacrol and thymol on acaricide-resistant Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) populations and combination with cypermethrin: Is there cross-resistance and synergism?

This study evaluated the acaricidal activity of thymol and carvacrol on Rhipicephalus microplus populations with different resistance profiles and investigated the synergistic effect of combinations of these monoterpenes with cypermethrin. The adult immersion test (AIT) was used to characterize the susceptibility of tick populations (45 field populations) to synthetic acaricides: deltamethrin, amitraz and chlorfenvinphos. The larval packet test (LPT) was used to determine the LC₅₀ values for thymol (25 tick populations) and carvacrol (20 tick populations). The susceptible strain Porto Alegre (POA) was used as a reference for calculating the resistance ratio (RR). Subsequently, larval immersion tests (LIT) were performed with combinations of cypermethrin with thymol or carvacrol to assess a synergistic effect. In the AIT, deltamethrin showed efficacy > 90% in one (2.2%) population tested (mean: 12.1 and 11.1 for populations 1-25 and 26-40, respectively), whereas amitraz and chlorfenvinphos showed efficacy > 90% for two (4.4%) populations (mean: 61.3 and 47.3 for populations 1-25 and 26-40, respectively) and eight (17.7%) populations (mean: 69.7 and 59.7 for populations 1-25 and 26-40, respectively). In the LPT, the LC₅₀ values for thymol and carvacrol varied from 0.67 to 2.12 mg/mL and 0.55-3.21 mg/mL, with an average LC₅₀ for populations of 1.49 and 1.75 mg/mL, respectively. For thymol, no resistance was observed in any of the populations, values of RR₅₀ > 1.5. There was no correlation between the LC₅₀ values for thymol and the efficacy of the chemical acaricides tested. Regarding carvacrol, for only one tick population had the value of RR₅₀ > 1.5, indicating an incipient resistance. No correlation was observed between the LC₅₀ values for carvacrol and the efficacy of tested acaricides. The combination of thymol and carvacrol with cypermethrin showed a synergistic effect in the resistant population (Jaguar - thymol 4.19 and carvacrol 3.67), and no synergistic interaction were showed in the susceptible population. Answering the questions we conclude that: 1 - The comparison between the LC₅₀ values for thymol and carvacrol in field populations and the susceptible strain POA suggests the absence of cross-resistance (ticks and terpenes), and the differences between the LC₅₀ values for thymol and carvacrol in the different R. microplus populations are inherent to the characteristics of each population tested; 2 - the combination of thymol or carvacrol with cypermethrin showed a synergistic effect with different activity according to the population of ticks.

Acaricidal effect of major compounds to control Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in dairy cows and possible alternatives for reversing multidrug resistance

Tick control represent a great challenge to animal health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acaricidal compounds against Rhipicephalus microplus from dairy cattle systems in Paraná State, Brazil. Six farms (PR1-PR6) were selected, where anti-tick products were applied at fixed intervals. Two other farms that adopted alternative protocols; target selective treatment (PRS), and individual-based agroecological protocol (PRA) were also included in the trial. Fully engorged R. microplus were collected for the in vitro adult immersion test (AIT), and the egg hatch test (EHT) in all eight populations. The larval packet test (LPT) was used on PR6 and PRA tick populations. The treatment groups were composed of G1: dichlorvos 45% plus cypermethrin 5%, G2: deltamethrin 2.5%, G3: cypermethrin 15%, chlorpyriphos 25%, plus citronellal 1%, and G4: amitraz 12.5%. The efficacy at PR1 to PR6 revealed that G3 and G4 achieved moderate to high efficacy, from 75.0 to 100.0% and 73 to 98%, respectively. In the LPT, the efficacy at PR6 was 76.0, 67.0, 93.0 and 30.6%, while PRA presented 100.0, 100.0, 100.0, and 54.0%, for G1, G2, G3 and G4, respectively. Sustainable parasite control strategies are discussed.

Selective control of Rhipicephalus microplus in a dairy cattle herd from different genetic groups

Alternatives for Rhipicephalus microplus control are needed in the light of its resistance to acaricides. One of the ways to decrease the use of acaricides in a herd is selective control (SC). In the present study, SC was evaluated in a dairy herd consisting of different genetic groups: Holstein, Jersey, crossbreed and Girolando. Ticks were counted in the right anterior third region on around 90 cows, totaling nine evaluations at intervals of 21 days. Commercial pour-on acaricide was applied only when the infestation was greater than or equal to eight ticks larger than 4 mm in the anterior third region. Tick counts were transformed into log10 and analyzed using mixed models. There was significant difference among groups: Holstein had the highest averages of tick numbers, as expected, although 34.3% did not receive tick treatment. In the other groups, SC reduced the use of acaricides by 79.1% for crossbreed, 81.5% for Jersey and 94.9% for Girolando. The criterion used for applying the acaricide successfully kept the tick population under control. The great advantage of SC was savings to the system, without harming the animals, in addition to generate fewer residues in the animals and in the environment.

Combination of entomopathogenic nematodes with acaricides or essential oil of Lippia triplinervis against Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae)

This study aimed to evaluate the combination effect of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 and H. indica LPP1, with the acaricides deltamethrin, amitraz and chlorfenvinphos, and the essential oil (EO) of Lippia triplinervis, against engorged females of Rhipicephalus microplus. In order to verify the effect of acaricides and EO, the adult immersion test was used, and in the groups treated only with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), 150 infective juveniles were used per female. In the treatments with nematodes in combination with the acaricides or EO, the females were immersed in the solutions (acaricide or EO) and then transferred to Petri dishes for application of the nematodes. The treatment with acaricides resulted in a control percentage lower than 70%, except in the group treated with chlorfenvinphos in the second experiment (84.3%). The control percentage was 73% for L. triplinervis EO, and greater than 90% in all the groups treated with nematodes. For treatments with EPNs combined with the acaricides or EO, the efficacy was greater than 95% (except for deltamethrin + HP88), and reached 100% in the treatment with LPP1 + amitraz. It can be concluded that the EPNs at the concentrations tested were compatible with the acaricides deltamethrin, amitraz and chlorfenvinphos, and with the EO of L. triplinervis. These combinations enhance the effect of these control agents.

Management and control of parasites on dairy farms in northwestern region of São Paulo state

Dairy cattle farming is of great economic and social importance in all Brazilian's regions. Parasites can reduce milk productivity, especially the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. This study consisted of a questionnaire answered by 40 milk producers in the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo. The aim was to ascertain how these producers controlled ticks and other parasites. Very many of them knew nothing about the biological cycle of the cattle tick or about strategic control or acaricide efficacy tests. The majority (87.5%) controlled ticks at a high frequency, without technical criteria and care to apply the acaricide. Spraying was the most used mode of acaricide application (95%) and endectocides were used by 45%. Cattle tick fever was the harm most associated with ticks (87.5%) followed closely by screwworm (77.5%). However, 65% were satisfied with their tick control. About the control of others parasites, all dewormed at least twice a year their animals; 65% were controlling horn fly; 40% had problems with screwworm. The interviewers had in general good level of education and the farms generally exhibited a high degree of technology for milk production on pasture because half of them received technical assistance frequently.

Principal component analysis on the perceptions of milk producers about Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus control in Minas Gerais

Milk producers in Lavras, Passos and Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, were interviewed with the aim of evaluating their perceptions and attitudes regarding control over Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Multivariate correlation between the variables was done by means of principal component analysis. The producers' perceptions and attitudes regarding R. (B.) microplus were similar: most of them did not have any basic knowledge of tick biology or control, and they applied acaricide products through backpack spraying, without any defined technical criteria. Some of the results obtained were: I. a negative correlation between schooling level and the frequency of spraying cattle with acaricides; II. a positive correlation between milk production, quality of equipment for acaricide application and technological level of the farm; III. farm properties with greater production and technification tended to keep the intervals between acaricide applications constant over the course of the year. After applying principal component analysis, a positive correlation was observed between schooling level, technological level of the farm and perceptions regarding R. (B.) microplus, but without any correlation with attitudes towards controlling this tick. It was concluded that higher technological level and schooling level improved the producers' perceptions relating to the biology of the tick R. (B.) microplus, but did not achieve effectiveness with regard to using controls more rationally.

Perceptions of milk producers from Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, regarding Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus control

Semi-systematized interviews were conducted with 100 dairy cattle producers in the municipality of Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, with the aim of ascertaining their perceptions regarding the importance of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and of combating it. Content analysis was performed and the frequency distribution of each of the variables was used to construct profiles of the producers interviewed. The production losses caused by ticks were perceived incompletely by the producers, who were unaware of the pathogen transmission caused by the parasite and the indirect losses through combating it, such as the cost of acaricide and labor. The combat operations were performed in a traditional manner, with an excessive number of inefficient treatments that aimed to control the level of infestation at that moment. The quality of the acaricide dipping/spraying applied was affected by the quality of the equipment used to apply the products, lack of knowledge of the mode of action of these products, lack of the specific information needed and lack of motivation caused by unawareness of the disadvantages of chemical combat. It was concluded that the lack of knowledge about combat methods and the acceptance of endemicity of the parasitosis were impediments to changing the realities encountered.
