Abstract
Many farmland bird populations are declining, and their negative trends are often associated with changes in land-use or farming practices, including the use of agrochemicals. The red-legged partridge (RLP) is a Mediterranean farmland game species of high socio-economic importance whose populations are thought to have declined sharply since the mid-20th century associated with farmland changes. However, no large-scale studies have tested whether abundance or trends of RLP are related to farmland composition or management. We used hierarchical distance sampling models to estimate RLP abundance in 2010 in central Spain (Castilla-La Mancha), a main European population stronghold of this species. We studied associations between RLP density and land-uses (including variation in management: irrigated crops or organic farming). We also assessed regional abundance variation over seven years (2010-2017) and its relationship with changes in land-use. Our results show that RLP abundance increased with the availability of natural vegetation and traditional rain-fed vineyards, but decreased with increasing proportions of tree crops and irrigated vineyards; the latter association was less pronounced in areas sensitive to nitrate contamination in water, where the amount of fertilizers applied in farmland and use of certain farming practices is more strictly regulated. These results support the idea that increases in intensive vineyards are detrimental to the RLP. We also report a strong population decline of RLP in the region, with a 51% abundance reduction in seven years. This decline was steeper in areas where more natural vegetation had been lost and where ecological tree crops had increased. Overall, our results indicate that changes in land-use (type of crop, or the destruction of natural vegetation in farmland) and farming practices (e.g. use of irrigation in certain crops, use of nitrates) have important impacts on this farmland bird, affecting both spatial distribution and population dynamics.

Abstract
Sexual steroids can play an important role as life-history organizers. In males, high circulating testosterone levels induce physiological/behavioral costs and benefits, leading to trade-offs. However, studies simultaneously testing the impact of these levels in both fitness components (survival and fecundity) during lifetime are scarce and limited to wild birds. To determine the mortality causes or hormonal manipulation impacts on male fertility is, nonetheless, a difficult task in free-ranging animals that could be easier in captivity. We longitudinally monitored captive red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) and exposed males to high exogenous testosterone levels, anti-androgens, or a control treatment during each breeding period throughout their lives. Theory predicts that individuals maintaining high androgen levels should obtain higher fitness returns via reproduction, but suffer reduced longevity. Testosterone-treated male partridges, accordingly, lived shorter compared to controls, since they were more prone to die from a natural bacterial infection. However, the same birds seemed to have a lower capacity to fertilize eggs, probably due to endocrine feedback reducing testicular mass. These results show that exogenous testosterone can exert unpredicted effects on fitness parameters. Therefore, caution must be taken when drawing conclusions from non-fully controlled experiments in the wild. Males treated with the androgen-receptor blocker flutamide did not outlive controls as predicted by the life-history trade-off theory, but their mates laid eggs with higher hatching success. The latter could be due to mechanisms improving sperm quality/quantity or influencing maternal investment in egg quality. Testosterone receptor activity/amount could thus be as relevant to fitness as testosterone levels.
Significance statement
It has repeatedly been hypothesized that high testosterone levels induce a cost in terms of reduced lifetime reproductive success. This can be due to reduced fecundity or via shorter lifespan. This is, however, only supported by a handful of studies, mostly in wild birds. We tested this in captive male red-legged partridges, which allowed us to determine reproductive success and mortality causes. We increased testosterone levels or blocked its action with antiandrogens throughout life. High testosterone levels reduced the survival by making birds more prone to die by infection. The eggs produced by their mates also showed lower hatching success, a probable manipulation artifact that should be considered in avian studies in the wild. Interestingly, the androgen-receptor blocker flutamide increased lifetime hatching success compared to controls, suggesting that androgen receptor amounts/activity are even more relevant to fitness than testosterone levels.

Abstract
Even though antimicrobial‐resistant bacteria have begun to be detected in wildlife, raising important issues related to their transmission and persistence of clinically important pathogens in the environment, little is known about the role of these bacteria on wildlife health, especially on endangered species. The Brazilian merganser (Mergus octosetaceus) is one of the most threatened waterfowl in the world, classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In 2019, a fatal case of sepsis was diagnosed in an 8‐day‐old Brazilian merganser inhabiting a zoological park. At necropsy, major gross lesions were pulmonary and hepatic congestion. Using microbiologic and genomic methods, we identified a multidrug‐resistant (MDR) extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase (ESBL) CTX‐M‐8‐producing Escherichia coli (designed as PMPU strain) belonging to the international clone ST58, in coelomic cavity, oesophagus, lungs, small intestine and cloaca samples. PMPU strain harboured a broad resistome against antibiotics (cephalosporins, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, sulphonamides, trimethoprim and quinolones), domestic/hospital disinfectants and heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, lead, copper and silver). Additionally, the virulence of E. coli PMPU strain was confirmed using a wax moth (Galleria mellonella) infection model, and it was supported by the presence of virulence genes encoding toxins, adherence factors, invasins and iron acquisition systems. Broad resistome and virulome of PMPU contributed to therapeutic failure and death of the animal. In brief, we report for the first time a fatal colibacillosis by MDR ESBL‐producing E. coli in critically endangered Brazilian merganser, highlighting that besides colonization, critical priority pathogens are threatening wildlife. E. coli ST58 clone has been previously reported in humans, food‐producing animals, wildlife and environment, supporting broad adaptation and persistence at human–animal–environment interface.

Eutrophication and bacterial pathogens as risk factors for avian botulism outbreaks in wetlands receiving effluents from urban wastewater treatment plants. Appl Environ Microbiol 2014; 80:4251-9. Abstract
Due to the scarcity of water resources in the "Mancha Húmeda" Biosphere Reserve, the use of treated wastewater has been proposed as a solution for the conservation of natural threatened floodplain wetlands. In addition, wastewater treatment plants of many villages pour their effluent into nearby natural lakes. We hypothesized that certain avian pathogens present in wastewater may cause avian mortalities which would trigger avian botulism outbreaks. With the aim of testing our hypothesis, 24 locations distributed in three wetlands, two that receive wastewater effluents and one serving as a control, were monitored during a year. Sediment, water, water bird feces, and invertebrates were collected for the detection of putative avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens type A, and Clostridium botulinum type C/D. Also, water and sediment physicochemical properties were determined. Overall, APEC, C. perfringens, and C. botulinum were significantly more prevalent in samples belonging to the wetlands which receive wastewater. The occurrence of a botulism outbreak in one of the studied wetlands coincided with high water temperatures and sediment 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), a decrease in water redox potential, chlorophyll a, and sulfate levels, and an increase in water inorganic carbon levels. The presence of C. botulinum in bird feces before the onset of the outbreak indicates that carrier birds exist and highlights the risk of botulinum toxin production in their carcasses if they die by other causes such as bacterial diseases, which are more probable in wastewater wetlands.
