How much evidence is enough evidence for a new species?

New Insights into the Molecular Evolution of Tapirus pinchaque (Tapiridae, Perissodactyla) and the Rise and Fall of Tapirus kabomani as a Full Species

Large wild mammals are extremely important in their respective ecological communities and are frequently considered to be emblematic. This is the case of the different tapir species, the largest terrestrial mammals from the Neotropics. Despite their large size and being objects of interest for many naturalists, the field still lacks critical genetics and systematics information about tapir species. In the current work, we analyzed four molecular datasets (mitogenomes, and three nuclear genes, RAG 1-2, IRBP, and BRCA1) of two South American tapirs: the Andean tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) and the alleged new species of tapir, Tapirus kabomani. We derived four main findings. (1) Our molecular phylogenetic analyses showed T. pinchaque as the youngest tapir branch in Neotropics and a sister species of Tapirus terrestris. This contradicts the traditional morphological observations of renowned zoologists and paleontologists, who considered T. pinchaque as the oldest Neotropical tapir. (2) Our data does not support that the alleged T. kabomani is a full species. Rather, it is a specific group within T. terrestris. (3) T. pinchaque is the Neotropical tapir species which yielded the lowest levels of genetic diversity (both for mitochondrial and nuclear data). (4) The spatial genetic structure for T. pinchaque shows differences depending on the type of molecular marker used. With mitogenomes, the spatial structure is relatively weak, whereas with two nuclear genes (RAG 1-2 and IRBP), the spatial structure is highly significant. Curiously, for the other nuclear gene (BRCA1), the spatial structure is practically nonexistent. In any case, the northernmost population of T. pinchaque we studied (Los Nevados National Park in Colombia) was in a peripatric situation and was the most genetically differentiated. This is important for the adequate conservation of this population. (5) T. pinchaque showed clear evidence of population expansion during the last part of the Pleistocene, a period during which the dryness and glacial cold extinguished many large mammals in the Americas. However, T. pinchaque survived and spread throughout the Northern Andes.

The role of indirect evidence and traditional ecological knowledge in the discovery and description of new ape and monkey species since 1980

Although empirical data are necessary to describe new species, their discoveries can be guided from the survey of the so-called circumstantial evidence (that indirectly determines the existence or nonexistence of a fact). Yet this type of evidence, generally linked to traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), is often disputed by field biologists due to its uncertain nature and, on account of that, generally untapped by them. To verify this behavior and the utility of circumstantial evidence, we reviewed the existing literature about the species of apes and monkeys described or rediscovered since January 1, 1980 and submitted a poll to the authors. The results show that circumstantial evidence has proved to be useful in 40.5% of the examined cases and point to the possibility that its use could speed up the process at the heart of the discovery and description of new species, an essential step for conservation purposes.

A three-dimensional morphometric analysis of upper forelimb morphology in the enigmatic tapir (Perissodactyla: Tapirus) hints at subtle variations in locomotor ecology

Forelimb morphology is an indicator for terrestrial locomotor ecology. The limb morphology of the enigmatic tapir (Perissodactyla: Tapirus) has often been compared to that of basal perissodactyls, despite the lack of quantitative studies comparing forelimb variation in modern tapirs. Here, we present a quantitative assessment of tapir upper forelimb osteology using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to test whether the four modern tapir species are monomorphic in their forelimb skeleton. The shape of the upper forelimb bones across four species (T. indicus; T. bairdii; T. terrestris; T. pinchaque) was investigated. Bones were laser scanned to capture surface morphology and 3D landmark analysis was used to quantify shape. Discriminant function analyses were performed to reveal features which could be used for interspecific discrimination. Overall our results show that the appendicular skeleton contains notable interspecific differences. We demonstrate that upper forelimb bones can be used to discriminate between species (>91% accuracy), with the scapula proving the most diagnostic bone (100% accuracy). Features that most successfully discriminate between the four species include the placement of the cranial angle of the scapula, depth of the humeral condyle, and the caudal deflection of the olecranon. Previous studies comparing the limbs of T. indicus and T. terrestris are corroborated by our quantitative findings. Moreover, the mountain tapir T. pinchaque consistently exhibited the greatest divergence in morphology from the other three species. Despite previous studies describing tapirs as functionally mediportal in their locomotor style, we find osteological evidence suggesting a spectrum of locomotor adaptations in the tapirs. We conclude that modern tapir forelimbs are neither monomorphic nor are tapirs as conserved in their locomotor habits as previously described. J. Ecology and local knowledge of the Baird's tapir (Tapirella bairdii) in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, Mexico

As well as being of global cultural importance (from local tribal folklore to being an iconic species for conservation), the tapir plays an important role in its ecosystem as a herbivore and seed disperser. However, the ecology and ethnozoology of the endangered Baird's tapir in the north of Oaxaca, Mexico is poorly understood. We used camera traps to estimate its relative abundance and density and to describe the activity patterns of the northernmost population of Baird's tapir in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca. Local knowledge concerning the tapir was also documented, along with the conservation strategies undertaken by the 2 indigenous communities that own the land where the study site is located. Only adult tapirs were photographed, and these were active 14 h per day, but were mainly nocturnal and crepuscular. The estimated relative abundance (12.99 ± 2.24 events/1000 camera days) and density values (0.07-0.24 individuals/km(2) ) were both similar to those found in another site in Mexico located within a protected area. Semi-structured interviews revealed that people have a basic understanding of the eating habits, activity and main predators of the tapir. There were reports of hunting, although not among those respondents who regularly consume bush meat. Thus, the relative abundance and density estimates of tapir at the study site could be related to the favorable condition of the forest and the absence of hunting and consumption of tapir meat. Fortunately, the local people are conducting initiatives promoting the conservation of this ungulate and its habitat that combine to constitute a regional trend of habitat and wildlife protection.
