Abstract
The changes in human lifestyle over the past few decades have impacted the prevalence of skin diseases within different societies. Skin diseases may result in various physical and mental disorders. The most common mental disorders observed among the patients are stress, anxiety, and depression. This study aims to investigate the global prevalence of anxiety, depression, and stress in patients with skin diseases. In this Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis study, the PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Embase, Web of science, and Google Scholar repositories were searched without a lower time limit. Heterogeneity among the identified studies was examined using the I2 index, and accordingly random effects model was adopted for analysis. Data analysis was conducted within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (v. 2). In total, 113 studies were included for the final analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of stress, depression, and anxiety in skin disease patients was found to be 39.4%, 27.2% and 28.8%, respectively. Among patients with psoriasis, acne, vitiligo or atopic dermatitis diseases, the highest number of patients suffering from stress was related to patients with acne (75.7%). The highest prevalence of depression, and anxiety was reported in patients with vitiligo (38.3%) and acne (36.5%), respectively. Considering the high prevalence of mental disorders among patients with skin diseases and recognising the impacts of mental health challenges on patients' well-being, the findings of this study provide valuable insights for identifying specific populations that require targeted interventions for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. Accordingly, healthcare policymakers should incorporate psychological treatment and support measures as integral components of comprehensive care strategies for patients with skin diseases.

Abstract
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common skin disease featured with skin inflammation and a mixed itch/pain sensation. The itch/pain causes the desire to scratch, affecting both physical and psychological aspects of patients. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying itch/pain sensation of ACD still remain elusive. Here, we found that oxidative stress and oxidation-related injury were remarkably increased in the inflamed skin of a mouse model of ACD. Reducing oxidative stress significantly attenuated itch/pain-related scratching, allokonesis and skin inflammation. RNA-Sequencing reveals oxidative stress contributes to a series of skin biological processes, including inflammation and immune response. Attenuating oxidative stress reduces overproduction of IL-1β and IL-33, two critical cytokines involved in inflammation and pain/itch, in the inflamed skin of model mice. Exogenously injecting H2O2 into the neck skin of naïve mice triggered IL-33 overproduction in skin keratinocytes and induced scratching, which was reduced in mice deficient in IL-33 receptor ST2. ACD model mice showed remarkable neutrophil infiltration in the inflamed skin. Blocking neutrophil infiltration reduced oxidative stress and attenuated scratching and skin inflammation. Therefore, our study reveals a critical contribution of neutrophil-derived oxidative stress to skin inflammation and itch/pain-related scratching of ACD model mice via mechanisms involving the triggering of IL-33 overproduction in skin keratinocytes. Targeting skin oxidative stress may represent an effective therapy for ameliorating ACD.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense itching and highly visible signs, representing a great burden to the patient. Despite its straightforward diagnosis, AD severity and burden can be underestimated in routine clinical practice. This review aims to determine the impact of AD on patients' lives, establish which domains of life are most affected, and identify symptom drivers of AD burden. A systematic literature review was conducted in Pubmed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus following Cochrane and PRISMA recommendations. Observational studies published in English or Spanish between January 1, 2018, and August 31, 2022, evaluating the impact of AD and its symptoms from the patient's perspective, were included. Reviewed studies were assessed for quality following the STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology Checklist. A total of 28 observational studies evaluating the impact of AD and its symptoms from the patient's perspective were included in the review. All domains of the AD patient's life were found to be greatly affected, including health-related quality of life (HRQoL), emotional health, sleep disorders, work impairment, health care resource utilization, cognitive function, and development of comorbidities. The more severe the disease, the greater the impact, worsening in patients with moderate and severe AD. Pruritus and pain are reported to be the disease symptoms with the greatest impact. In conclusion, AD impacts several domains of patients' lives, especially HRQoL and mental health. Pruritus and pain are identified as the main drivers of AD impact, suggesting that optimal symptom control may reduce the burden and improve disease management.
