The Relationship Between Meaning in Life, Life Satisfaction and Job Satisfaction with Religious Experience in the Life of Polish Nurses

This article examines the relationship between mental health dimensions such as meaning in life, life satisfaction, and job satisfaction, and the religious experience of God's presence and God's absence in the lives of Polish nurses with a bachelor and master's degree. The research was carried out in the city of Kraków, Poland. All nurses were brought up in Catholic families and declared themselves believing and practicing. The following research tools were used: the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Satisfaction with Job Scale, and the Intensity of Religious Experience Scale. Data analysis showed that the education level of Polish nurses does not significantly differentiate the analyzed variables. The correlation analysis showed that the strongest relationship was between satisfaction with life and satisfaction with job in the group of nurses with a bachelor's degree and nurses with a master's degree. The regression analysis showed that the strongest predictor of God's presence in the group of nurses with a bachelor's degree was satisfaction with job, and in the group of nurses with a master's degree it was satisfaction with life. The structural equation analysis revealed that the satisfaction with life plays an important and positive mediation role between the presence of the meaning in life and the search for the meaning in life, and the experience of God's presence and the experience of God's absence in the life of nurses.

Evaluation of anxiety, depression, aggression, and life satisfaction of nurses working with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-infected patients

Background: Negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, and aggression are among the factors that influence the level of perceived life satisfaction. Life satisfaction is related to physical and mental health and is an important component of human functioning. Nurses are particularly vulnerable to negative emotions due to their high-risk occupation and contact with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected individuals. Aim of the study: The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and levels of anxiety, depression, and aggression among nurses working with patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study interviewed 110 individuals employed in two medical institutions in Opole and Lower Silesia Voivodeships between September and December 2021. Interviews were conducted using two standardized questionnaires, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Modified Version (HADS-M) and the Satisfaction with Life Survey (SWLS). Results: Analysis revealed that 26.3% (n = 29) of nurses working with SARS-CoV-2-infected patients had marked anxiety symptoms, whereas 5.5% (n = 6) of respondents had depressive disorders. There was no association between age and levels of anxiety (p = 0.153) or depression (p = 0.867), although the workplace had a significant effect on the severity of anxiety (p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (p = 0.019). Most respondents (66.4%, n = 73) described their life satisfaction as average. However, borderline depressive symptoms significantly impacted levels of perceived life satisfaction (p = 0.031). Conclusions: Nurses working in coronavirus disease (COVID) wards were more likely to show anxiety symptoms than signs of depression, while borderline depressive symptoms were more prevalent in those with low life satisfaction. Age and marital status did not affect the severity of anxiety or depression among respondents. These findings provide the basis for a deeper exploration of the issues and highlight the increasing need for more professional support.

Determinants Affecting the Rationing of Nursing Care and Professional Burnout among Oncology Nurses

Rationing of nursing care (RNC) is characterized by the omission of any aspect of the required patient care, resulting in incomplete or delayed nursing activities. Oncology nurses are exposed to a very high psychological burden, which can lead to the development of professional burnout syndrome (PBS). The level of PBS might be related to life and job satisfaction. This study aimed to identify determinants affecting RNC and reveal the relationship between RNC, life and job satisfaction, and the PBS levels among oncology nurses. The sample was a hundred oncology nurses from four hospitals in Poland with a mean age of 43.26 ± 10.69 years. The study was conducted from March 2019 to February 2020. The self-administered sociodemographic questionnaire and validated scales determining missed nursing care, job and life satisfaction, and life orientation were used: Basel Extent of Rationing of Nursing Care-Revised (BERNCA-R), Satisfaction with Job Scale (SWJS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The mean BERNCA score was 1.55 ± 0.15, which indicates the frequency of RNC was between “never” and “rarely”. The mean SWJS score was 11.71 ± 5.97, which showed that nurses were “dissatisfied” and “rather dissatisfied” with their job. A low SWLS score was reported by 59% of nurses, which means that more than half of the respondents described their life satisfaction as low. In LOT-R, 66% of nurses reported pessimistic and 31% neutral life orientation. The mean overall MBI score was 49.27 ± 19.76 points (EE = 63.56 ± 25.37, DEP = 37.2 ± 24.95, and lack of PA = 47.05 ± 22.04), which means that half of the nurses perceived burnout and half did not. Additionally, the higher the job satisfaction (SWJS), the more frequent the RNC (BERNCA) (p < 0.05). The greater the EE, the stronger the sense of lack of PA, and the higher the PBS (MBI) level, the less frequent the RNC (BERNCA). In conclusion, there is a phenomenon of omission of some aspects of care among oncology nurses, but it is not frequent and concerns areas not directly related to therapeutic tasks, but requiring effort and not resulting in quick noticeable effects. It depends only little on life satisfaction and more on job satisfaction and PBS level. The results may indicate the professionalism of Polish nurses, their responsibility towards their patients’ life and health, and the sense of mission that enables them to perform their duties regardless of the external and internal difficulties. The presence of the PBS phenomenon in oncology nurses highlights the need for continued research in this area.

Satisfaction With Life, Satisfaction With Job, and the Level of Care Rationing Among Polish Nurses-A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Rationing of nursing care is a serious issue that has been widely discussed throughout recent years in many countries. The level of satisfaction with life and of satisfaction with job as the nurse-related factors may significantly affect the level of care rationing. Aim: To assess the rationing of nursing care among the Polish nurses and the impact of nurse-related variables, i.e., satisfaction with life and satisfaction with job on the level of nursing care rationing. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 529 Polish registered nurses employing in two University Hospitals. Three self-report scales in the Polish version were used in this study, namely, Basel Extent of Rationing of Nursing Care-revised version (BERNCA-R), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Satisfaction with Work Scale (SWWS). Results: The respondents indicated that the most frequently rationed activity is studying the situation of individual patients and care plans at the beginning of the shift. The least frequently rationed activity indicated by the respondents was adequate hand hygiene. The patient-to-nurse ratio and the level of satisfaction with job are significant independent factors affecting the level of care rationing. Conclusions: The assessment of the level of satisfaction with life and identification of factors affecting this assessment will enable reducing the occurrence of care rationing.

Well-being of nurses and working conditions-Are polish nurses different from doctors and midwives in terms of professional quality of life?

Aim

The aim of the study is to assess the differences in the professional quality of life between nurses, midwives and doctors.

Design

Cross-sectional study.

Methods

A total of 297 participants were surveyed: 165 nurses, 101 doctors and 31 midwives. We used ProQol questionnaire with three subscales (compassion satisfaction -CS, burnout- B, compassion fatigue-CF and own questionnaire (social-demographics data).

Results

Burnout and CF were average in a group of nurse and midwives, low in group of doctors. In group of nurses, a relationship was observed between compassion satisfaction and: job seniority (p < .01), basic place of work (p < .01), self-assessment of work situation (p < .01), as well as between burnout and: job seniority (p < .05), form of employment (p = .03), basic place of work (p = .002), self-assessment of work situation (p < .01). In group of midwives was only the relationship between the self-assessment of work situation and: CS (p < .01) and burnout (p < .01) were shown.

Place of Work and Level of Satisfaction with the Lives of Polish Nurses

Practicing as a nurse may be a factor influencing the overall level of satisfaction with life. The aim of the study was to assess the level of satisfaction with nurses' lives in relation to the place of employment. The research was conducted among nurses working in hospitals, primary health care, and outpatient specialist care. The study was carried out with the use of the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) scale. Statistical analysis included a quantitative and qualitative approach to life satisfaction of the nurses surveyed. The impact of independent variables, measured on nominal (qualitative) scales on the results of the SWLS scale in quantitative terms, was assessed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pairwise comparisons were assessed with the assumption of equality of variance with the Tukey honestly significant difference test. The level of satisfaction with life of the surveyed nurses was average. The place where nurses worked significantly influenced the level of life satisfaction. Nurses working in a hospital had a high level of satisfaction with life more so than nurses working in primary care or outpatient specialist care. The workplace is a factor that significantly differentiates the level of life satisfaction of the surveyed nurses.
