SWCNT Network-FET Device for Human Serum Albumin Detection

A thin film of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network field-effect transistor (FET) was fabricated by a simple, fast, and reliable deposition method for electronic applications. This study aims to develop a method for fabricating a thin film of random SWCNTs to be used as a transducer to detect human serum albumin (HSA) in biosensor applications. The random SWCNT network was deposited using the airbrush technique. The morphology of the CNT network was examined by utilising atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), while electrical characteristics were analysed using three-terminal IV measurements. The thin film (SWCNT network) was applied as a transducer to detect human serum albumin (HSA) based on its covalent interaction with antibodies. HSA plays a significant part in the physiological functions of the human body. The surface alteration of the SWCNTs was verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Electrical current-voltage measurements validated the surface binding and HSA detection. The biosensor linearly recorded a 0.47 fg/mL limit of detection (LOD) and a high sensitivity of 3.44 μA (g/mL)^-1 between 1 fg/mL and 10 pg/mL. This device can also be used to identify a genuine HSA despite interference from other biomolecules (i.e., bovine serum albumin (BSA)), thus demonstrating the random SWCNT-FET immunosensor ability to quantify HSA in a complex biological environment.

Selective, Ultra-sensitive and Rapid Detection of Serotonin by Optimized ZnO Nanorod FET Biosensor

BACKGROUND

Fluctuation in serotonin (5-HT) level is an essential manifestation of several neurological disorders. In view of such importance, it is necessary to monitor the levels of 5-HT with good sensitivity, selectivity, affordability and low response time. Zinc oxide (ZnO) based field effect transistors (FET) with attributes like minimized noise levels and large on-off ratio are regarded as emerging high performance biosensor platforms. However, their response is significantly non-linear and there has been no appreciable endeavor for improving the non-linearity.

METHOD

In this paper, we have introduced embedded gate electrode encompassing the channel of the FET which improves the uniformity in electric field line distribution through the electrolyte and proportionately enhances the capture of target biomolecule at ultra low concentrations, thereby increasing the linearity. Further, we have incorporated the optimized parameters of ZnO nanorods reported previously, for rapid and selective detection of 5-HT.

RESULTS

It has been observed that the fabricated ZnO FET biosensor lowers the detection limit down to 0.1fM which is at least one order of magnitude lower than the existing reports. The sensor also has wide linear range from 0.1fM to 1nM with a detection time of about 20 minutes.

CONCLUSION

The proposed zinc oxide nanorod-based sensor can be used as an excellent tool for future diagnosis of neurological disorders.

Synthesis and comparative study on the structural and optical properties of ZnO doped with Ni and Ag nanopowders fabricated by sol gel technique

In this work we have tried to prepare Ni and Ag doped ZnO nanopowders using the sol gel technique. The influence of Ni and Ag (1, 3 and 5 mol.%) on the crystalline structure and optical properties of ZnO was investigated. The samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR and UV–visible spectrophotometer. XRD patterns confirmed the wurtzite formation of doped and undoped ZnO nanopowders. The average crystallite sizes of the prepared samples found from XRD were 19 nm for undoped ZnO, from 17 to 22 nm for Ni-ZnO and from 19 to 26 nm for Ag-ZnO. The average crystallite size of Ag-ZnO increased with increasing Ag contents. Different optical properties of Ni-ZnO and Ag-ZnO nanopowders were observed for different Ni and Ag content. The band gaps of Ni-ZnO and Ag-ZnO nanopowders were lower than that of the undoped ZnO (3.1 eV). The band gaps of Ag-ZnO were lower than that of Ni-ZnO. The optical properties of ZnO were enhanced by Ni (mol.%) in the UV region and by Ag (3 and 5 mol.%) in the visible region.

Titanium dioxide-mediated resistive nanobiosensor for E. coli O157:H7

A titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO₂ NP)-mediated resistive biosensor is described for the determination of DNA fragments of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7). The sol-gel method was used to synthesize the TiO₂ NP, and microlithography was applied to fabricate the interdigitated sensor electrodes. Conventional E. coli DNA detections are facing difficulties in long-preparation-and-detection-time (more than 3 days). Hence, electronic biosensor was introduced by measuring the current-voltage (I-V) DNA probe without amplification of DNA fragments. The detection scheme is based on the interaction between the electron flow on the sensor and the introduction of negative charges from DNA probe and target DNA. The biosensor has a sensitivity of 1.67 × 10¹³ Ω/M and a wide analytical range. The limit detection is down to 1 × 10^-11 M of DNA. The sensor possesses outstanding repeatability and reproducibility and is cabable to detect DNA within 15 min in a minute-volume sample (1 μL). Developing Conductive Highly Ordered Zinc Oxide Nanorods by Acetylacetonate-Assisted Growth

Highly ordered vertically grown zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) were synthesized on ZnO-coated SiO₂/Si substrate using zinc acetylacetonate hydrate as a precursor via a simple hydrothermal method at 85 °C. We used 0.05 M of ZnO solution to facilitate the growth of ZnO NRs and the immersion time was varied from 0.5 to 4 h. The atomic force microscopy revealed the surface roughness of ZnO seed layer used to grow the ZnO NRs. The morphology of vertically grown ZnO NRs was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction examination and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the structure of highly ordered ZnO NRs was crystalline with a strong (002) peak corresponded to ZnO hexagonal wurtzite structure. The growth of highly ordered ZnO NRs was favorable due to the continuous supply of Zn²⁺ ions and chelating agents properties obtained from the acetylacetonate-derived precursor during the synthesis. Two-point probe current–voltage measurement and UV–vis spectroscopy of the ZnO NRs indicated a resistivity and optical bandgap value of 0.44 Ω.cm and 3.35 eV, respectively. The photoluminescence spectrum showed a broad peak centered at 623 nm in the visible region corresponded to the oxygen vacancies from the ZnO NRs. This study demonstrates that acetylacetonate-derived precursors can be used for the production of ZnO NRs-based devices with a potential application in biosensors.
