Simultaneous occurrence of triple teeth and double teeth in primary dentition: A rare case report and review of the literature

This paper reports the case of a 3-year-old male patient with triple teeth in the right maxillary incisor region and double teeth in the left mandibular incisor region. He had pre-existing medical conditions. The triple teeth were extracted and examined using micro-computed tomography. A literature review was performed to discuss this abnormality.

Triplication of deciduous teeth: a rare dental anomaly

Fusion of teeth is the union of two or more tooth germs, which are usually separated. Depending upon the stage of odontogenesis, it can be complete or incomplete. The present case describes fusion between the maxillary primary right central and lateral incisor with a supernumerary tooth. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed the presence of fused triple teeth. The fused teeth were extracted, sectioned and were visualized under stereomicroscope at three levels and the diagnosis of fusion of three teeth was confirmed histologically.

Triple tooth in primary dentition: A proposed classification

Triple teeth may result from fusion, gemination or concrescence causing transient esthetic and functional problems in primary dentition and retardation or alteration of development and eruption of permanent successors. We report an unusual case of a boy aged five with fusion among maxillary left primary central incisor, lateral incisor and a supernumerary tooth concomitant with agenesis of permanent lateral incisor. A review of literature on triple tooth was done along with a proposed classification of the triple teeth.
