Nylons with Applications in Energy Generators, 3D Printing and Biomedicine

Linear polyamides, known as nylons, are a class of synthetic polymers with a wide range of applications due to their outstanding properties, such as chemical and thermal resistance or mechanical strength. These polymers have been used in various fields: from common and domestic applications, such as socks and fishing nets, to industrial gears or water purification membranes. By their durability, flexibility and wear resistance, nylons are now being used in addictive manufacturing technology as a good material choice to produce sophisticated devices with precise and complex geometric shapes. Furthermore, the emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators and the development of biomaterials have highlighted the versatility and utility of these materials. Due to their ability to enhance triboelectric performance and the range of applications, nylons show a potential use as tribo-positive materials. Because of the easy control of their shape, they can be subsequently integrated into nanogenerators. The use of nylons has also extended into the field of biomaterials, where their biocompatibility, mechanical strength and versatility have paved the way for groundbreaking advances in medical devices as dental implants, catheters and non-absorbable surgical sutures. By means of 3D bioprinting, nylons have been used to develop scaffolds, joint implants and drug carriers with tailored properties for various biomedical applications. The present paper aims to collect evidence of these recently specific applications of nylons by reviewing the literature produced in recent decades, with a special focus on the newer technologies in the field of energy harvesting and biomedicine.

PA12 Surface Treatment and Its Effect on Compatibility with Nutritional Culture Medium to Maintain Cell Vitality and Proliferation

This research investigates the suitability of printed polyamide 12 (PA12) and its dyed version to support cells in bioengineering applications. For this purpose, human gingival fibroblasts (hGF06) were cultured on PA-12 scaffolds that were 3D-printed by Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). The study examined the direct cultivation of cells on MJF-printed cell culture scaffolds and the effect of leachate of PA-12 printed by MJF on the cultured cells. The article presents research on the surface treatment of PA12 material used in 3D printing and the effect of automatic staining on cell vitality and proliferation in vitro. The study presents a unique device designed exclusively for staining prints made of the biocompatible material PA12 and demonstrates the compatibility of 3D-printed polyamide 12 parts stained in the novel device with a nutrient culture medium and cells. This novel PA12 surface treatment for biomedical purposes does not affect the compatibility with the culture medium, which is essential for cell viability and proliferation. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that mitochondrial fitness and cell survival were not affected by prolonged incubation with clear or dyed PA12 3D-printed parts.

Design and preparation of an electromechanical implant prototype for an on-demand drug delivery

INTRODUCTION

A bio-implant is a drug-delivery system that is implanted in the human body for a period of more than 30 days. Electromechanical systems are one type of bio-implant that has recently been introduced as a new generation of targeted drug delivery methods. The overarching goal of utilizing these systems is to integrate electrical and mechanical features in order to benefit from the numerous applications of these two systems when used together. The current study aimed to design a prototype of an electromechanical system using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and MultiJet Fusion (MJF) techniques for drug delivery that can release a specific drug dosage in the patient's body by connecting to a sensor or under the control of a signal sent by the physician.

METHODS

Initially, the implant chambers were created in the form of a hollow cylinder, closed at one end, using three different types of 3D printers: FDM, SLS, and MJF. Each implant was then filled with a model drug (pentoxifylline) and sealed with a thin gold membrane. To achieve the lowest voltage required to melt the gold membrane, an electric circuit with controllable DC voltage generator was designed. Finally, the mechanical resistance, drug release rate, and surface morphology of the designed implants were evaluated.

RESULTS

The MJF 3D printer, overally, had higher printing precision and repeatability than other printers; however, the implants printed by the FDM 3D printer were more accurate than other techniques (P value < 0.001), similar to the dimensions of the designed file. The mechanical resistance of the implants was also evaluated, and the polylactic acid implants printed by FDM had the highest value of Young's modulus in both the standard samples and the designed implants. During the 3-month drug leakage study, FDM 3D printed implant had a greater ability to store the desired drug load (P value < 0.001), Furthermore, the SEM micrographs revealed that the polylactic acid implants printed by FDM had minimal porosity in their structure and the layers were well adhered together. The gold membrane with a middle diameter of 2 mm required the lowest voltage of 6 V. As a result, the final electrical circuit was designed with smaller dimensions in order to achieve the voltage required to melt the gold membrane.

CONCLUSION

Due to the lack of drug leakage and other mechanical studies, the electromechanical implant produced by the FDM 3D printer was chosen as the optimal electromechanical implant in this study. Along with the designed small circuit, this implant can release a drug dosage in the patient's body at the physician's demand.

Injection Moulding into 3D-Printed Plastic Inserts Produced Using the Multi Jet Fusion Method

Most injection-moulded plastics are injection moulded into moulds made from conventional materials such as steel or aluminium. The production costs of the mould are considerable. 3D printing from plastic can be used for injection moulds to save these costs. This article deals with injection moulding into a 3D-printed plastic mould. The injection insert was produced on a HP Multi Jet Fusion 4200 3D printer. The other part of the mould was made of aluminium. A custom injection mould was designed for the research. One insert was made from plastic, and one from aluminium. Both moulds were injected under the same injection conditions. A comparison of injection moulding into the plastic and aluminium inserts is made in this article. The difference when injection moulding into the plastic insert is explained using the different technological conditions. The part injected into the plastic insert was also different from the part injected into the aluminium insert. The difference is explained in this article. This article also looks at the interface between the injection-moulded part and the plastic insert using an electron microscope. The images taken clarify the differences between injection moulding into a plastic insert and an aluminium insert and the differences of the injection-moulded part from the plastic insert.
