Abstract
Natural plant pigments are safe and have low toxicity, with various nutrients and biological activities. However, the extraction, preservation, and application of pigments are limited due to the instability of natural pigments. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the extraction and application processes of natural plant pigments in detail. This review discusses the classification, extraction methods, biological activities, and modification methods that could improve the stability of various pigments from plants, providing a reference for applying natural plant pigments in the industry and the cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
AIM To compare the effect of vegetable oils on the uptake of lutein and zeaxanthin by adult retinal pigment epithelial (ARPE)-19 cells in vitro. METHODS ARPE-19 cells were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium-F-12 supplemented with 10% foetal bovine serum and 1% penicillin-streptomycin in a humidified 5% CO2 incubator maintained at 37°C. Cells were treated with 247 µmol/L lutein, 49 µmol/L zeaxanthin and 1% (v/v) of either coconut oil, corn oil, peanut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, castor oil, or linseed oil for 48h. Lutein and zeaxanthin concentration in the cells were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS Among the oils tested, the highest lutein and zeaxanthin uptake was observed with coconut oil while the lowest was observed with linseed oil. CONCLUSION ARPE-19 uptake of lutein and zeaxanthin are found to be dependent on the type of oils.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Excessive UV irradiation and ROS exposure are the main contributors of ocular pathologies. Pseudobulb of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. is one of the sources of Shihu and has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a tonic to nourish stomach, replenish body fluid, antipyretic and anti-inflammation. AIM OF STUDY This study aimed to investigate whether D. nobile could protect ocular cells against oxidative stress damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retinal-related cell lines, ARPE-19 and RGC-5 cells, were pretreated with D. nobile extracts before H2O2- and UV-treatment. Cell viability and the oxidative stress were monitored by sulforhodamine B (SRB) and SOD1 and CAT assay kits, respectively. The oxidative stress related proteins were measured by Western blotting. RESULTS Under activity-guided fractionation, a sesquiterpene-enriched fraction (DN-2) and a major component (1) could ameliorate H2O2- and UV-induced cytotoxicity and SOD1 and CAT activity, but not dendrobine, the chemical marker of D. nobile. Western blotting showed both DN-2 and compound 1 protected ARPE-19 cells against UV-induced oxidative stress damage by regulating MAPK and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling. CONCLUSION Our results suggest D. nobile extract protects retinal pigment epithelia cells from UV- and oxidative stress-damage, which may have a beneficial effect on eye diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) characterized by neurofibrillary tangles caused by hyperphosphorylated tau is the most common cause of dementia. Zeaxanthin (Zea), derived from fruits and vegetables, may reduce the risk of AD. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) might cause memory impairment in AD. OBJECTIVE Here, we studied protective role of Zea on the relationship among ERS, activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β, tau phosphorylated kinase), and p-Tau (Ser 396 and Thr 231). METHODS The results were obtained in non-RA and RA group by using different treatment, such as 9-cis-retinoic acid (RA), TM (ERS inducer), Zea, 4-PBA (ERS inhibitor), and SB216763 (GSK-3β inhibitor). The methods included flow cytometry and MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] for the detections of cell cycle and cell viability and western blot as a third measure of proteins in relation to ERS and tau phosphorylation. We have collected and analyzed all the data that suggested application of drugs for the treatment in non-RA and RA group. RESULTS Zea displays its protection on TM-induced cell injury, upregulation of GRP78 expression, and change of GSK-3β activity and tau phosphorylation when 4-PBA and SB216763 interfere with the process. CONCLUSION These studies indicated that Zea is in vicious circle in ERS, GSK-3β, and tau phosphorylation, and further reflect its potential value in AD.
