Inclusive domestic violence standards: strategies to improve interventions for women with disabilities?

Paramedics as a New Resource for Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has a major impact on the health and well-being of women. The need for a coordinated response from health care professions encountering IPV patients is well established, and guidelines for individual health care professions are needed. Paramedics are believed to frequently encounter IPV patients, and this study aims to create a guideline to direct their response based on expert opinion. A clinical guideline for paramedics was created using current evidence and recommendations from health agencies. A panel of family violence researchers and service delivery experts such as physicians, family violence support agencies, and police commented on the guideline via a Policy Delphi Method to obtain consensus agreement. A total of 42 experts provided feedback over three rounds resulting in 100% consensus. Results include clinical indicators to recognize IPV patients in the prehospital environment, a description of how paramedics should discuss IPV with patients, recommended referral agencies and pathways, and appropriate documentation of case findings. This study has created the first comprehensive, consensus-based guideline for paramedics to recognize and refer IPV patients to care and support. The guideline could potentially be modified for use by ambulance services worldwide and can be used as the basis for building the capacity of paramedics to respond to IPV, which may lead to increased referrals to care and support.

Access and Accessibility in Domestic and Family Violence Services for Women With Disabilities: Widening the Lens

Women with disabilities experiencing violence can face challenges accessing domestic and family violence (DFV) services. Our research explored how these services understood and operationalized access for women with disabilities. In this article, we use Levesque, Harris, and Russell's access framework to show how to be accessible to women with disabilities, and DFV services can widen the lens of access and accessibility to respond to women's own priorities. These centered around appropriateness, approachability, and acceptability. Addressing these broader issues of access in policy and practice alongside disability-specific needs can better align what services offer and what women need.

Factors Associated With Domestic Violence Against Women in Iran: An Exploratory Multicenter Community-Based Study

Domestic violence against women committed by intimate partners is a worldwide concern especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to assess the problem among Iranian women and identify associated risk factors. Using a cross-sectional multicenter design, 1,600 women in six different areas of Iran were surveyed. A measure of domestic violence against women was administered and demographic information collected. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with domestic violence. The prevalence of domestic violence among participants were emotional (64%), physical (28%), and sexual (18%). Higher education (both women and their partners), employment status of partner (being employed), and lower number of children lowered the risk, whereas history of previous marriage (for either women or their partners), unstable marriage, substance abuse, crowded family situation, and lower socioeconomic status increased the risk of domestic violence. There is a high prevalence of domestic violence, particularly emotional, against women by their partners. Preventive measures are recommended such as increasing public awareness, improving in socioeconomic status of families, educating women about what they can do, and encouraging counseling for the couple or the woman alone.

The association between disability and intimate partner violence in the United States

PURPOSE

Prior research has shown that people with disabilities are at greater risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. This study seeks to examine the link between disability and IPV in a nationally representative sample of U.S. women and men. Also, by establishing that disability preceded recent IPV victimization, this study allows for a more thorough understanding of whether people with disabilities are at greater risk of victimization subsequent to having a disability.

METHODS

Data were analyzed from the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, an ongoing, national random digit dial telephone survey of U.S. adults. Estimates of age-adjusted 12-month IPV prevalence by disability status were calculated.

RESULTS

Compared to women without a disability, women with a disability were significantly more likely to report experiencing each form of IPV measured, which includes rape, sexual violence other than rape, physical violence, stalking, psychological aggression, and control of reproductive or sexual health. For men, significant associations were found with respect to stalking and psychological aggression by an intimate partner.

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that people with a disability are at greater risk of victimization and that primary and secondary prevention efforts might be targeted to those with a disability.
