Abstract
BACKGROUND Partial or total laryngopharyngectomy defects have traditionally been reconstructed using the radial forearm, anterolateral thigh, or jejunal free flaps. The latissimus dorsi myocutaneous free flap (LDMFF) is an option for high-risk patients with complex laryngopharyngeal ± cutaneous neck defects. METHODS Retrospective single-surgeon case series from 2017 to 2022. Outcomes were assessed at both the back donor site and head and neck. RESULTS Twenty-four patients were identified. Flap survival was 100%. There was 1 (4.2%) pharyngocutaneous fistula and 2 (8.3%) tracheo-esophageal peristomal fistulas. At last follow-up, 17 (71%) were sustaining weight on oral intake, and 7 (29%) were G-tube dependent with 4 of these able to do some type of oral intake. Seven (29.2%) had post-operative stricture/stenosis requiring dilation. There were only minor donor site complications, all managed conservatively. CONCLUSIONS The LDMFF can be a robust reconstructive option, particularly for radiated high-risk patients with complex pharyngeal defects, including skin.

Abstract
Background Existing reporting guidelines pay insufficient attention to the detail and comprehensiveness reporting of surgical technique. The Surgical techniqUe rePorting chEcklist and standaRds (SUPER) aims to address this gap by defining reporting standards for surgical technique. The SUPER guideline intends to apply to articles that encompass surgical technique in any study design, surgical discipline, and stage of surgical innovation. Methods Following the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) Network approach, 16 surgeons, journal editors, and methodologists reviewed existing reporting guidelines relating to surgical technique, reviewed papers from 15 top journals, and brainstormed to draft initial items for the SUPER. The initial items were revised through a three-round Delphi survey from 21 multidisciplinary Delphi panel experts from 13 countries and regions. The final SUPER items were formed after an online consensus meeting to resolve disagreements and a three-round wording refinement by all 16 SUPER working group members and five SUPER consultants. Results The SUPER reporting guideline includes 22 items that are considered essential for good and informative surgical technique reporting. The items are divided into six sections: background, rationale, and objectives (items 1 to 5); preoperative preparations and requirements (items 6 to 9); surgical technique details (items 10 to 15); postoperative considerations and tasks (items 16 to 19); summary and prospect (items 20 and 21); and other information (item 22). Conclusions The SUPER reporting guideline has the potential to guide detailed, comprehensive, and transparent surgical technique reporting for surgeons. It may also assist journal editors, peer reviewers, systematic reviewers, and guideline developers in the evaluation of surgical technique papers and help practitioners to better understand and reproduce surgical technique. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Surgical studies evaluating a device or technology in comparison to an established surgical technique should accurately report all the important components of the surgical technique in order to reduce the risk of intervention bias. In the debate of visualization of the recurrent laryngeal nerve alone (VONA) versus intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) during thyroidectomy, surgical technique plays a key role in both strategies. Our aim was to investigate whether the surgical technique was considered as a risk of intervention bias by relevant meta-analyses and reviews and if steps of surgical intervention were described in their included studies. METHODS We searched PUBMED, CENTRAL-Cochrane library, PROSPERO and GOOGLE for reviews and meta-analyses focusing on the comparison of IONM to VONA in primary open thyroidectomy. Τhen, primary studies were extracted from their reference lists. We developed a typology for surgical technique applied in primary studies and a framework approach for the evaluation of this typology by the meta-analyses and reviews. RESULTS Twelve meta-analyses, one review (388,252 nerves at risk), and 84 primary studies (128,720 patients) were included. Five meta-analyses considered the absence of typology regarding the surgical technique as a source of intervention bias; 48 primary studies (57.14%) provided information about at least one item of the typology components and only 1 for all of them. DISCUSSION Surgical technique of thyroidectomy in terms of a typology is underreported in studies and undervalued by meta-analyses comparing VONA to IONM. This missing typology should be reconsidered in the comparative evaluation of these two strategies.

Abstract
Background Surgical technique plays an essential role in achieving good health outcomes. However, the quality of surgical technique reporting remains heterogeneous. Reporting checklists could help authors to describe the surgical technique more transparently and effectively, as well as to assist reviewers and editors evaluate it more informatively, and promote readers to better understand the technique. We previously developed SUPER (surgical technique reporting checklist and standards) to assist authors in reporting their research that contains surgical technique more transparently. However, further explanation and elaboration of each item are needed for better understanding and reporting practice. Methods We searched surgical literature in PubMed, Google Scholar and journal websites published up to January 2023 to find multidiscipline examples in various article types for each SUPER item. Results We explain the 22 items of the SUPER and provide rationales item by item alongside. We provide 69 examples from 53 literature that present optimal reporting of the 22 items. Article types of examples include pure surgical technique, and case reports, observational studies and clinical trials that contain surgical technique. Examples are multidisciplinary, including general surgery, orthopaedical surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, neurological surgery, oncogenic surgery, and emergency surgery etc. Conclusions Along with SUPER article, this explanation and elaboration file can promote deeper understanding on the SUPER items. We hope that the article could further guide surgeons and researchers in reporting, and assist editors and peer reviewers in reviewing manuscripts related to surgical technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital video recordings are increasingly used across various medical and surgical disciplines with advances in computer hardware and software technologies. The creation of high-quality surgical video footage requires a basic understanding of key technical considerations, together with creativity and sound aesthetic judgment. Online operative videos have become a core resource within neurosurgical education. OBJECTIVE To provide a step-by-step description for making operative videos using a video from a real case as an example. METHODS We recorded an operative video of the microsurgical resection of a right lateral ventricle subependymoma performed by an anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach. The patient consented to surgical resection of the subependymoma and to publication of this operative video. With the video, we explain the step-by-step process the authors used for developing the raw video into a publishable surgical video. RESULTS The patient depicted in our video tolerated the surgery well and made a complete recovery. The final video produced from the surgery illustrated elements that Operative Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, and other journals require in surgical videos. CONCLUSION Although more than 1200 peer-reviewed (PubMed) neurosurgical operative videos have been published so far, there has not been a single publication that describes the step-by-step process of producing an operative video. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published detailed description of editing of an educational operative video in neurosurgery and the first video case report of a microsurgical resection of subependymoma of the lateral ventricle in the peer-reviewed English literature.
