Comparison of Dental Caries Risk Assessment Using CaRisk- A Simple Mobile Based Application and WHO deft, DMFT Scores: A Cross Sectional Study

Statement of the Problem

It is essential to address caries risk at an early stage for the prevention of dental caries. Mobile application CaRisk is designed in a particular way to self-assess the dental caries risk by the individual's themselves.

Purpose

The current study aimed to assess the dental caries risk among age groups 5-6 and 35-44 using self-assessment caries risk mobile application CaRisk and compare it with the deft and DMFT values.

Materials and Method

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Chennai, India; to evaluate the risk of dental caries in children aged 5 to 6 and adults aged 35 to 44. The scores of the mobile application CaRisk and the decayed- extracted- filled teeth (deft)/ decayed-missing-filled-teeth (DMFT) caries risk assessment were evaluated. Descriptive statistics were performed. The risk category was determined by frequency. Chi-square analysis was done to determine whether the DMFT scores and the CaRisk mobile app were associated. The correlation was performed between the CaRisk mobile application and DMFT scores.

Results

Association was found between the caries risk assessment score of the mobile application CaRisk and the DMFT and deft scores of the adults and children for both the age groups 5-6 and 35-44 years respectively and it indicates that it was found to be statistically significant. Pearson's correlation was performed to assess the strength of association and R-values obtained for the age group 5-6 and 35-44 years respectively, which was statistically significant (0.892 and 0.840).

Conclusion

This CaRisk mobile application scores correlate with the deft and DMFT scores and it is an effective self-diagnosis tool for assessing dental caries risk assessment. Further, it is suggested that the mobile application CaRisk should be tested among a huge population.

Assessing the Quality, Privacy, and Security of Breast Cancer Apps for Arabic Speakers: Systematic Search and Review of Smartphone Apps

BACKGROUND

Breast cancer is a widespread disease, and its incidence is rapidly increasing in the Middle East and North Africa region. With the increasing availability of smartphone apps for various health purposes, breast cancer apps have emerged as tools for raising awareness, providing support, and empowering women affected by this disease. These apps offer many features, including information on breast cancer risk factors, self-examination guides, appointment reminders, and community support groups or hotlines. Using apps raises the risk of privacy and security issues, and we hope that examining these features of the apps will contribute to the understanding of how technology can be used to improve these apps and provide insights for future development and improvement of breast cancer apps.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to critically review the quality, privacy, and security of breast cancer apps available to Arabic speakers.

METHODS

Similar to several recent studies, we used a systematic search for apps available in Google Play and Apple App stores using both the web interface and the built-in native stores installed on smartphones. The search was conducted in mid-December 2022 in Arabic using the following keywords: سرطان الثدي - فحص سرطان الثدي - علاج سرطان الثدي - مرض سرطان الثدي - أعراض سرطان الثدي - فحص الثدي (breast cancer, breast cancer treatment, breast cancer disease, breast cancer symptoms, breast cancer screening, and breast test). These preidentified search terms are based on earlier work concerning the top searched breast cancer topics by Arabic speakers through Google's search engine. We excluded apps that did not have an Arabic interface, were developed for non-Arabic speakers, were paid, needed a subscription, or were directed toward health care workers. The Mobile App Rating Scale was used to evaluate the quality of the apps concerning their engagement, functionality, aesthetics, and information. A risk score was calculated for the apps to determine their security risk factors.

RESULTS

Only 9 apps were included, with most (6/9, 67%) being supported by advertisements and categorized as informational. Overall, the apps had low numbers of downloads (>10 to >1000). The majority of the included apps (8/9, 89%) requested dangerous access permissions, including access to storage, media files, and the camera. The average security score of the included apps was 3.22, while only 2 apps provided information about data security and privacy. The included apps achieved an overall average quality score of 3.27, with individual dimension scores of 4.75 for functionality, 3.04 for information, 3.00 for aesthetics, and 2.32 for engagement.

CONCLUSIONS

The limited availability of breast cancer apps available to Arabic speakers should be a call to action and prompt health care organizations and developers to join forces and collaboratively develop information-rich, usable, functional, engaging, and secure apps.

Monitoring health as an opportunity to categorize preventative and early-treatment actions in a self-care journey: our experience with a Healthcare Magenta Scorecard

Background

Applying a digital health intervention to measure health and wellbeing status offers opportunities to guide and augment healthcare and promotion. In our scenario, we consider mainly digital-native patients and present an evaluation of a new Healthcare Magenta Scorecard towards this end.

Methods

Grounded in the six domains of health and promotion (physical activity; sleep quality; nutrition; habits/lifestyle; mental health; quality of life) we developed a health Magenta Scorecard (Magenta Score), a mobile based Electronic Patient Reported Outcomes (e-PRO) that measures patients health and wellbeing every 3-5 months. The Magenta Scorecard was derived from previously published evidence-based instruments. We collected data as patients were onboarded into our healthcare system (T0 and T1, time span between measurements, 141 days) and provided correlations among our domains of care.

Results

A total of 1,622 participants responded to T0 and T1 our Magenta Scorecard. Participants mean age was 31.3 [95% confidence interval (CI): 31.2-31.5] years and female (63.4%). Fifty-five percent (n=892) of our sample were categorized as relating to Health and Wellbeing promotion, 8.5% (n=138) disease management, 35.7% (n=579) self-care care support and only 0.8% (n=13) pertained to case management. From our care coordination guided approach, our Magenta Scorecards reported mean improvement across the study cohort of 26 ± standard deviation (SD) points, from T0 (649, 95% CI: 643-656) to T1 (675, 95% CI: 668-682). Our Magenta Scorecard domains had significant, albeit weak spearman correlations.

Conclusions

We demonstrated our Magenta Scorecard rationale and its guided approach. The Magenta Scorecard displayed adequate responsiveness and was significantly correlated across all of the domains investigated. Further prospective research is needed to validate our results in the long term.

Patient-facing cancer mobile apps that enable patient reported outcome data to be collected: A systematic review of content, functionality, quality, and ability to integrate with electronic health records

PURPOSE

Enabling cancer patients to self-manage symptoms through mobile applications can result in more informed, autonomous patients who are partners in their care, consequently reducing the burden on health services. Electronic patient reported outcomes completed before a clinical review can increase the frequency and quality of holistic assessments, while integration into electronic health records can maximise clinical utility. The ability of apps to integrate with electronic health records is key to providing a real-time interface between patient reports and healthcare response. This review identifies patient-facing cancer apps which can record patient reported outcomes, and explores their purpose, functionality, quality, and ability to integrate with electronic health records.

METHODS

A systematic app review and content synthesis was conducted on patient-facing cancer apps available in the United Kingdom. Where applicable, the review aligned with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and meta-Analysis. Two validated scales assessed functionality and quality: The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics functionality score and the Mobile App Rating Scale. Flesch-Kincaid metrics explored readability.

RESULTS

Apple App and Google Play stores identified 405 apps, of which 12 met the eligibility criteria. All were free to download, 1 (8%) had in-app purchases/subscriptions. Nine (75%) were affiliated with a professional health body/charity. Six (50%) analysed inputted data and provided medical advice based on answers. The average Flesch Reading Ease score was 42.7 out of 100. The apps had an average of 7.3 functions each and a mean MARS score of 4/5. None integrated with electronic health records.

CONCLUSION

While many cancer apps exist, few enable patient reported outcomes to be recorded and shared with clinicians in real-time. Further research is warranted to explore the feasibility of integrating with electronic health records, as this function can improve patient experience and outcomes, and increase efficiency of hospital resources through more proactive care.

Development, usability and quality evaluation of the resilient mobile application for women with breast cancer

Introduction

Mental health problems as a consequence of cancer lower the quality of life of cancer patients. Despite increasing studies of breast cancer-focused mobile health applications (m-Health apps), there is less research on breast cancer patients' quality of life or well-being. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the usability and quality of an educational m-Health app aimed at improving the resilience of breast cancer in women.

Methods

This study was conducted in four phases. It included extracting the requirements of the app through the nominal group technique. Based on these results, an m-Health app was developed and evaluated in terms of usability and quality by two scales, System Usability Scale and Mobile App Rating Scale questionnaires, respectively. Finally, the role of patients' age and educational backgrounds in the use of the app was assessed. The relationship between learnability and usability of the app was measured by the T-Test.

Results

The app was developed with three user interfaces. Its usability developed from the patient's point of view scored a remarkable score of 83.20 with a 95% confidence interval. This value was too indicative of high satisfaction with the usefulness and the possibility of recommending it to other cancer survivors. The results of the quality evaluation from an expert's point of view showed that this app had good functionality. Evaluation of the role of demographic information in the use of the app showed that it can be used for all age groups with different levels of education. The app did not differ significantly between learnability and usability.

Conclusion

The development of m-Health apps, based on usability principles that are suitable for all age groups with different levels of education, is welcomed by cancer patients.
