Coprecipitation of trace metal ions in water with bismuth(III) diethyldithiocarbamate for an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric determination

Spectrophotometric measurement of Cu(DDTC)2 for the simultaneous determination of zinc and copper

A spectrophotometric procedure for the simultaneous determination of zinc(II) and copper(II) in a mixture using diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) as ligand has been described. Complexes formed with DDTC was extracted with CHCl(3)/CCl(4) and the absorbance was measured at 435 nm which is equivalent of Cu(II) in sample only as Zn(DDTC)(2) has no absorption. Zinc measurement is based on the quantitative displacement of zinc from Zn(DDTC)(2) by Cu(II) with the addition of excess copper(II) to the extract. The absorbance is measured again where additional absorbance is equivalent to zinc. The molar absorptivity and sandall's sensitivity at this wavelength are 2.86×10(5) mol(-1) L cm(-1) and 3.076 ng cm(-2), respectively. Reproducibility with in 4% and detection limits of 0.29 μg mL(-1) was obtained. Linear calibration range was 0.2-14 μg mL(-1) for zinc and 0.2-12 μg mL(-1) for copper with the regression coefficient (r(2)) 0.998 for each. In the presence of a suitable masking agent (EDTA) very good selectivity was achieved. The method was extended to the determination of zinc and copper in a number of environmental water and soil samples, biological, pharmaceutical, fertilizer and food samples.

Synthesis of a novel chelating resin and its use for selective separation and preconcentration of some trace metals in water samples

A new chelating resin, poly[N-(4-bromophenyl)-2-methacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid-co-divinylbenzene], was synthesized and characterized. The resin was used for selective separation, preconcentration and determination of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) ions in water samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Effects of pH, concentration and volume of elution solution, sample flow rate, sample volume and interfering ions (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Fe(3+), Mn(2+), Al(3+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Cd(2+), Cl(-) and SO(4)(2-)) on the recovery of the analytes were investigated. The sorption capacity of the resin was 25.6, 19.8, 32.1, 41.3, 38.9, 13.9 and 18.3 mg g(-1) for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III), respectively. A high preconcentration factor, 100, and low relative standard deviation, <or=2.5% (n=7) values were obtained. The detection limits (microg L(-1)) were 0.57 for Cu(II), 0.37 for Ni(II), 0.24 for Co(II), 0.09 for Cd(II), 1.6 for Pb(II), 0.19 for Mn(II) and 0.72 for Fe(III). The method was validated by analysing fortified lake water (TMDA-54.4, a trace element fortified calibration standard) and spiked water samples. The method was applied to the determination of the analytes in tap and lake water samples.

Bi(III)4-methylpiperidinedithiocarbamate coprecipitation procedure for separation--pre-concentration of trace metal ions in water samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination

A pre-concentration method was developed for determination of trace amounts of cadmium, copper and lead in water samples by FAAS after coprecipitation by using potassium 4-methylpiperidinedithiocarbamate (K4-MPDC) as a chelating agent and Bi(III) as a carrier element. This procedure is based on filtration of the solution containing precipitate on a cellulose nitrate membrane filter following Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) coprecipitation with Bi(III)4-MPDC and then the precipitates together with membrane filter were dissolved in concentrated nitric acid. The metal contents of the final solution were determined by FAAS. Several parameters including pH of sample solution, amount of carrier element and reagent, standing time, sample volume for precipitation and the effects of diverse ions were examined. The accuracy of the method was tested with standard reference material (MBH, C31XB20 and CRM BCR-32) and Cd, Cu and Pb added samples. Determination of Cd, Cu and Pb was carried out in sea water, river water and tap water samples. The recoveries were >95%. The relative standard deviations of determination were less than 10%.

Selective solid-phase extraction of Cu(II) using freshly precipitated lead diethyldithiocarbamate and its spectrophotometric determination

A new solid-phase extraction method has been developed for the selective extraction of Cu(II) in an aqueous system using freshly precipitated lead diethyldithiocarbamate (Pb(DDTC)2) as a reagent. The method is based on the quantitative replacement of Pb(II) ions in the solid Pb(DDTC)2 phase by Cu(II) ions present in aqueous phase. The obtained solid Cu(DDTC)2 phase was dissolved in chloroform and determined spectrophotometrically at 435 nm. Beer’s law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0.2–5 mg dm−3. The molar absorptivity and the Sandell’s sensitivity coefficients of the solutions were 1.0689 × 104 dm3 mol−1 cm−1 and 0.0060 µg cm−2, respectively. The optimum conditions for each parameter were experimentally determined and possible interferences of various salts were also studied. The method has been validated and applied to determine Cu(II) in various alloys and water samples.

Determination of Cadmium and Zinc in Fertilizer Samples by FAAS after Solid-Phase Extraction with Freshly Precipitated Manganese-diethyldithiocarbamate

Using freshly precipitated manganese-diethyldithiocarbamate (Mn(DDTC)(2)) as a new reagent, a solid phase extraction method (SPE) has been developed for the extraction of Cd(II) and Zn(II) in aqueous fertilizer samples. A sample solution of 300 mL was taken and 0.10 g of freshly precipitated Mn(DDTC)(2) was added. After adding a phosphate buffer solution, the mixture was stirred at 10 min, filtered with a glass filter and washed with deionized water. The solid product containing Mn(DDTC)(2)-Cd(DDTC)(2)-Zn(DDTC)(2) complexes was dissolved in concentrated nitric acid and its volume was made complete up to 10 mL with deionized water. The metal contents of the solution were measured by an atomic-absorption spectrometer.

Determination of cadmium in river water by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry after internal standardization-assisted rapid coprecipitation with lanthanum phosphate

Cadmium ranging from 1 - 8 ng could be coprecipitated quantitatively with lanthanum phosphate at pH 5 - 6 from up to 200 mL of river water samples spiked with 5 microg of indium as an internal standard. Cadmium and indium coprecipitated were measured by using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The cadmium content in the original sample solution could be determined by internal standardization with indium. Since complete collection of the precipitate and strict adjustment of the volume of the final solution after coprecipitation are not required in this method, the precipitate could be collected by using decantation and centrifugation, and then dissolved with 1 mL of about 2.4 mol L(-1) nitric acid. The proposed method is simple and rapid, and enrichment close to 200-times can be attained; the detection limit (3sigma, n = 6) was 0.63 ng L(-1) in 200 mL of the sample solution.
