Use of Pleurotus eous Strain P-31 Spent Mushroom Compost (SMC) as Soil Conditioner on the Growth and Yield Performance of Capsicum annuum L. and Solanum lycopersicon L. Seedlings under Greenhouse Conditions in Ghana

Effect of Spent Mushroom Compost of Pleurotus eous Strain P-31 on Growth Performance and Nodulation of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.)

This study investigated the influence of spent mushroom compost (SMC) of Pleurotus eous strain P-31 on the growth, development and soil rhizobial population associated with nodulation of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) black-eye variety, under greenhouse conditions at 28 ± 2ºC for 12 weeks. Sandy loam soil was combined with different percentages of SMC to obtain the following combinations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 100%). Lower concentrations, SMC (5%-25%) promoted plant height, number of leaves, total leaf area, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a and b as well as dry matter accumulation of shoot and roots after 12 weeks at 28°C-32°C. Soil: SMC concentrations beyond 30% SMC variably depressed the various developmental criteria used in assessing growth. The trend obtained in the assessed parameter were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) in decreasing order: 5% SMC < 10% SMC < 15% SMC, < 20% SMC, < 25% SMC, < 30% SMC, < 100% SMC. The cowpea plant efficiently assimilated nitrogen (N₂) from the soil: compost. Nodule formation by cowpea was commensurate with increasing percentage of spent compost was highest in 5% SMC (89/plant) and declined with increasing proportion of SMC: soil mixture up to 25% but nodulation of cowpea plant was completely depressed in the absence of soil (100% SMC) pots. The Nodule Index data showed that the best nodule size and weight were formed by cowpea growing in medium containing 5% SMC (18) and 10% SMC (12) and thereafter declined. The nodules were red to pinkish in colour epitomising leghaemoglobin which could initiate nodulation and N₂ fixation in soil. This study has shown that 5% SMC-20% SMC could provide favourable conditions in soil as a biofertiliser to improve the growth, development and nodulation of cowpea.

Influence of substrate formulation on some morphometric characters and biological efficiency of Pleurotus ostreatus EM-1 (Ex. Fr) Kummer grown on rice wastes and "wawa" (Triplochiton scleroxylon) sawdust in Ghana

A study was conducted to correlate the stipe length, cap diameter, and growth yield (fresh weight) of the fruiting body of Pleurotus ostreatus strain EM-1 using different rice lignocellulosic wastes and "wawa" (Triplochiton scleroxylon) compost: raw unamended rice straw; rice straw amended with 1% CaCO₃ and 10% CaCO₃; rice straw amended with 1% CaCO₃ and 10% CaCO₃ supplemented with 5, 10, and 15% rice bran prior to bagging; rice straw and rice husk mixture (1:1 w/w) amended with 1% CaCO₃ and 10% CaCO₃ supplemented with 5%-15% rice bran prior to bagging; and wawa sawdust amended with 1% CaCO₃ and 10% rice bran. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design in a well-ventilated semi-dark room at 26-28°C and 60%-65% ERH. The fresh weight, length of the stipe, and cap diameter increased differentially in each treatment with an increasing period of composting in the substrates. There was a good coefficient of determination (R ²) among stipe length, cap diameter, and biological efficiency (%). The R ² among stipe length, cap diameter, and biological efficiency for the different formulated substrates ranged between R ² = 0.6346-0.9454 and R ² = 0.570-0.9624, respectively. The highest R ² was obtained on raw unamended rice straw substrates (stipe length and cap diameter were R ² = 0.9454 and R ² = 0.9444, respectively), whereas the lowest correlation coefficient among stipe length, cap diameter, and biological efficiency (%) (R ² = 0.6346; R ² = 0.0570), respectively, was recorded on the rice straw and rice husk mixture substrates. The results show a positive correlation in morphometric growth parameters studied on the different formulated substrates.

Application of solid-state fermentation by microbial biotechnology for bioprocessing of agro-industrial wastes from 1970 to 2020: A review and bibliometric analysis

This paper reviews the pertinent literature from 1970 to 2020 and presents a bibliometric analysis of research trends in the application of solid-state fermentation in the bioprocessing of agro-industrial wastes. A total 5630 publications of studies on solid-state fermentation that comprised of 5208 articles (92.50%), 340 book chapters (6.04%), 39 preprints (0.69%), 32 proceedings (0.56%), 8 edited books (0.14%) and 3 monographs (0.05%) were retrieved from Dimensions database. A review of the literature indicated that (i) fermentation of solid substrates is variously defined in the literature over the past 50 years, where "solid-state fermentation" is the most dominant research term used, and (ii) key products derived from the valorization of agro-industrial wastes through solid-state fermentation include, among others, enzymes, antioxidants, animal feed, biofuel, organic acids, biosurfactants, etc. Bibliometric analyses with VOSviewer revealed an astronomic increase in publications between 2000 and 2020, and further elucidated the most frequently explored core research topics, the most highly cited publications and authors, and countries/regions with the highest number of citations. The most cited publication between 2010 and 2020 had 382 citations compared to 725 citations for the most cited publication from 1970 to 2020. Ashok Pandey from India was the most published and cited author with 123 publications and 8,613 citations respectively; whereas Bioresource Technology was the most published and cited journal with 233 publications and 12,394 citations. Countries with the most publications and citations are Brazil, France, India, and Mexico. These findings suggest that research in the application of solid-state fermentation for bioprocessing of agro-industrial wastes has gained prominence over the past 50 years. Future perspectives and implications are discussed.

Recycling of agro-wastes for Ganoderma lucidum mushroom production and Ganoderma post mushroom substrate as soil amendment

The in vitro growth of Ganoderma mycelia on six agro-wastes namely, broad bean stalks (BBS), cotton stalk (CS), maize straw (MS), rice straw (RS), sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and wheat straw (WS) supplemented with wheat bran (WB) or corn gluten (CG) was evaluated. Among the substrates used, CS appeared best followed by SCB and RS. WB showed best supplementation for mycelial growth. CO₂ emission values exhibited accurate measurements to decide the suitability of such agro-waste for growth rather than visual observations. CS+RS+SCB+WB in combination proven its superiority for in vitro growth and active spawn development substrate. In mushroom house, this particular formula proved its superiority and was on par with recommended EG formula; it gave the highest yield (195.16 g Kg^-1), biological efficiency (19.52%), protein (16.69%), polysaccharides (3.613%) and minerals (3433 mg/100 g). Spawn running period was the shortest in treatments inoculated with agro-waste-based spawns. With 40% biochar, days required to the complete mycelium colonization and fructification were 10.60 and 23.00, respectively. At 10% biochar, highest yields (238.40 g Kg^-1), biological efficiencies (23.84%), protein (19.58%) and minerals (4092 mg/100 g) were obtained. The higher the biochar level, the higher the reduction in emitted CO₂, the loss in C and the increase in N of Ganoderma post mushroom substrates (GPMSs). Under greenhouse conditions, almost all the tested GPMSs, at 0.125 or 0.25%, encouraged the reproduction of reniform nematodes and improved plant growth criteria.
