Abstract
Selenium has been proven to influence several biological functions, showing to be an essential micronutrient. The functional studies demonstrated the benefits of a balanced selenium diet and how its deficiency is associated with diverse diseases, especially cancer and viral diseases. Selenium is an antioxidant, protecting the cells from damage, enhancing the immune system response, preventing cardiovascular diseases, and decreasing inflammation. Selenium can be found in its inorganic and organic forms, and its main form in the cells is the selenocysteine incorporated into selenoproteins. Twenty-five selenoproteins are currently known in the human genome: glutathione peroxidases, iodothyronine deiodinases, thioredoxin reductases, selenophosphate synthetase, and other selenoproteins. These proteins lead to the transport of selenium in the tissues, protect against oxidative damage, contribute to the stress of the endoplasmic reticulum, and control inflammation. Due to these functions, there has been growing interest in the influence of polymorphisms in selenoproteins in the last two decades. Selenoproteins' gene polymorphisms may influence protein structure and selenium concentration in plasma and its absorption and even impact the development and progression of certain diseases. This review aims to elucidate the role of selenoproteins and understand how their gene polymorphisms can influence the balance of physiological conditions. In this polymorphism review, we focused on the PubMed database, with only articles published in English between 2003 and 2023. The keywords used were "selenoprotein" and "polymorphism". Articles that did not approach the theme subject were excluded. Selenium and selenoproteins still have a long way to go in molecular studies, and several works demonstrated the importance of their polymorphisms as a risk biomarker for some diseases, especially cardiovascular and thyroid diseases, diabetes, and cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are various differences in response to different antipsychotics and antioxidant defense systems (ADS) by sex. Previous studies have shown that several ADS enzymes are closely related to the treatment response of patients with antipsychotics-naïve first-episode (ANFE) schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE Therefore, the main goal of this study was to assess the sex difference in the relationship between changes in ADS enzyme activities and risperidone response. METHODS The plasma activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant status (TAS) were measured in 218 patients and 125 healthy controls. Patients were treated with risperidone for 3 months, and we measured PANSS for psychopathological symptoms and ADS biomarkers at baseline and at the end of 3 months of treatment. We compared sex-specific group differences between 50 non-responders and 168 responders at baseline and at the end of the three months of treatment. RESULTS We found that female patients responded better to risperidone treatment than male patients. At baseline and 3-month follow-up, there were no significant sex differences in TAS levels and three ADS enzyme activities. Interestingly, only in female patients, after 12 weeks of risperidone treatment, the GPx activity of responders was higher than that of non-responders. CONCLUSION These results indicate that after treatment with risperidone, changes in GPx activity were associated with treatment response, suggesting that changes in GPx may be a predictor of response to risperidone treatment in female patients with ANFE schizophrenia.

Abstract
Psychosis in Parkinson's disease (PDP) represents a common and debilitating condition that complicates Parkinson's disease (PD), mainly in the later stages. The spectrum of psychotic symptoms are heterogeneous, ranging from minor phenomena of mild illusions, passage hallucinations and sense of presence to severe psychosis consisting of visual hallucinations (and rarely, auditory and tactile or gustatory) and paranoid delusions. PDP is associated with increased caregiver stress, poorer quality of life for patients and carers, reduced survival and risk of institutionalization with a significant burden on the healthcare system. Although several risk factors for PDP development have been identified, such as aging, sleep disturbances, long history of PD, cognitive impairment, depression and visual disorders, the pathophysiology of psychosis in PD is complex and still insufficiently clarified. Additionally, several drugs used to treat PD can aggravate or even precipitate PDP. Herein, we reviewed and critically analyzed recent studies exploring the genetic architecture of psychosis in PD in order to further understand the pathophysiology of PDP, the risk factors as well as the most suitable therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Hyperglycemia plays a pronounced role in accelerating the process of aging due to high oxidative stress which triggers dyslipidemia and subsequently led to the progression of cataract. The aim of this study was to investigate lipid profile and its relationship with genotypes of SOD1, GPX1, and CAT variants in cataract patients. Total n = 680 samples were screened in four groups: senile cataract (SC), diabetic cataract (DC), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and controls (CL). Lipid profile was estimated and compared between groups, and its correlation was tested with glycemic markers. Association of SOD1 50 bp Indel, GPX1 (rs1800668), and CAT (rs1001179) genotypes with all clinical variables was investigated in cataract groups by regression statistics in SPSS® 16.0. Comparative analysis revealed that amount of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein parameters were significantly higher in both groups of cataracts when compared with controls (p < 0.01). Statistically higher levels of triglycerides were also evident in DM patients as compared with other three groups (p < 0.01). Significant weak positive correlation of glycated hemoglobin, fasting (FBG), and random blood glucose (RBG) levels was observed with triglycerides in DM (r = 0.16), SC (r = 0.15), and DC (r = 0.18) groups. Mutant genotype of SOD1 and CAT variants indicated significant association with TC, whereas GPX1 variant with FBG levels in accelerating predisposition of cataract in patients with diabetes (OR > 1.0). Outcomes suggested that TG may serve as a potential biomarker of lipid profile with manifestation of cataract in type 2 DM. Furthermore, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia demonstrated an inducing role in the pathogenesis of cataract with aging in hyperglycemia.

Abstract
AIMS Cataract formation is accelerated by hyperglycemia due to the excessive production of oxidative stress. This study aimed to examine the underlaying role of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) rs1800668, catalase (CAT) rs1001179 and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) 50 bp Indel promotor region variants in the pathogenesis of cataract in patients with diabetes. METHODS A population-based case-control study of n=680 individuals was conducted which comprised of four respective groups: type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic cataract, senile cataract patients and controls. Screening of genotypes was performed by allele-specific (AS) and conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Statistical testing was carried out using SPSS© 20.0, MedCal© and SNPStats© software's. Bioinformatics analysis of linkage disequilibrium was done by HaploView© software 7.0. RESULTS GPX1 (rs1800668) showed significant association with higher susceptibility of opacification in type 2 diabetes mellitus (χ2=23.0, Adjusted OR=1.63, 95% CI: 1.05-2.49, p<0.001). A protective role was anticipated by CAT variant (rs1001179) for the development of resistance against the pathogenicity of cataract with diabetes (χ2 = 107, Adjusted OR=0.17, 95% CI: 0.10-0.29, p<0.001). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) plot of GPX1 and CAT variants revealed that CTC-CTT haplotypes demonstrated the presence of linkage (D'=1.0) and co-inheritance (LOD=13.84) in patients of diabetic cataract. CONCLUSIONS GPX1 (rs1800668) variant may serve as an antioxidant biomarker for the assessment of risk for cataract in type 2 diabetes mellitus. GPX1 enzyme owed an antioxidant activity which can reduce the oxidative stress and hence could develop resistance in cataractogenesis. The findings could be beneficial as a potential target to the future pharmacogenomic studies of cataract prevention and eradication in diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Genetic factors and tobacco smoke exposure can be associated with an increased risk of acute pancreatitis (AP). The pathogenesis of AP is associated with intensive oxidative stress. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is one of many enzymes involved in the neutralization of free radicals. This study aimed to investigate the impact of SNP rs1050450 in the GPX1 gene and rs713041 in the GPX4 gene on the activity of total GPx in a group of AP patients and healthy subjects. It was found that AP can contribute to decreased GPx activity (in plasma and erythrocyte lysate) accompanied by an increased glutathione reductase (GR) activity and decreased glutathione (GSH) concentration in two groups, non-smokers and smokers. A decreased GPx activity in erythrocyte lysate of AP patients compared to healthy subjects was associated with the occurrence of the CC genotype for SNP rs1050450. It was noted an increased GPx activity and decreased GR activity in erythrocytes of non-smoking AP patients with the TT genotype compared to subjects with the CC and TC genotype for SNP rs713041. However, in the group of smoking AP patients with this genotype, GR activity was elevated compared to non-smokers, which was accompanied by increased GSH concentration. These results can indicate that smoking in the course of AP can change the involvement of antioxidants in dependence on the genotype for the examined SNPs. The CC genotype for SNP rs1050450 and the TT genotype for rs713041 increases the risk of AP recurrence, which may be associated with increased MDA concentration.

Abstract
Autism is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder leading to deficits in social interaction, communication, and several activities. An increasing number of evidence suggests a role of oxidative stress in the etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Indeed, impaired antioxidant mechanisms may lead to the inadequate removal of H2O2 with a consequent increase in highly active hydroxyl radicals and other reactive oxygen species causing cellular damages. The GPx1 is one of the most important enzymes counteracting oxidative stress. In this work, we investigated a possible correlation between the GCG repeat polymorphism present in the first exon of GPx1 gene encoding a tract of five to seven alanine residues (ALA5, ALA6, and ALA7) and ASD. Our findings highlighted a high frequency of ALA5 allele in ASD subjects. Moreover, proteins corresponding to the three GPx1 variants were produced in vitro, and the evaluation of their activity showed a lower values for GPx1 having ALA5 polymorphism. The comparison of the secondary and tertiary structure predictions revealed an alpha‐helix in correspondence of alanine stretch only in the case of GPx1‐ALA7 variant. Finally, to better investigate protein structure, steady‐state fluorescence measurements of GPx1 intrinsic tryptophan were carried out and the three tested proteins exhibited a different stability under denaturing conditions. This work demonstrates the importance in adopting a multidisciplinary strategy to comprehend the role of GPx1 in ASD. Results here obtained suggest a possible role of ALA5 GPx1 variant in ASD. However, given the multifactorial nature of autism, this evidence might be a piece of a more complex puzzle being the GPx1 enzyme part of a complex pathway in which several proteins are involved.

Abstract
Psychotic disorders represent a serious health concern. At this moment, anamnestic data, international criteria for diagnosis/classification from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 and the International Classification of Diseases-10 and diagnostic scales are used to establish a diagnosis. The most commonly used biomarkers in psychotic illnesses are those regarding the neuroimmune system, metabolic abnormalities, neurotrophins and neurotransmitter systems and proteomics. A current issue faced by clinicians is the lack of biomarkers to help develop a more accurate diagnosis, with the possibility of initiating the most effective treatment. The detection of biological markers for psychosis has the potential to contribute to improvements in its diagnosis, prognosis and treatment effectiveness. The mixture of multiple biomarkers may improve the ability to differentiate and classify these patients. In this sense, the aim of this study was to analyze the literature concerning the potential biomarkers that could be used in medical practice and to review the newest developments in electrochemical sensors used for dopamine detection, one of the most important exploited biomarkers.
