Abstract
Purpose To identify the suitability of pharmacy-based measures for determining medication adherence in routine clinical use. Methods Data were obtained through PubMed and Scopus databases up to December 2023 without publication year restrictions. This review included English studies on assessing medication adherence for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, using pharmacy databases and providing full-text access. We investigated evidence quality utilizing the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for non-randomized studies (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional) and the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies-2 and JADAD scales for quasi-experiments and randomized control trials, respectively. We determined validity characteristics (completeness, accuracy, reliability, objectivity, continuous adherence history, non-intrusiveness, sensitivity, and specificity) and applicability (cost-effectiveness, ease of use, and interpretability) to evaluate the suitability of pharmacy-based medication adherence measures in clinical settings. Results This review retrieved 1513 studies, of which 74 met the inclusion criteria. All of the studies, which were published from 2000 to 2023 and mostly utilized a retrospective cohort design (n = 53), included 17.6 million patients. Of the 74 studies, 50 were conducted in the United States. Diabetes mellitus (n = 40) was the most prevalent disease, whereas the medication possession ratio (n = 46) and prescription days covered (n = 31) were the most prevalent pharmacy-based matrix. According to the results, 73 articles demonstrated validity characteristics, whereas 1 article lacked these characteristics. All 74 (100%) articles had applicability characteristics. Conclusion This systematic review demonstrates that pharmacy-based measures possess valid characteristics, including comprehensive, accurate, objective, reliable, and continuously updated adherence history records. These measures are designed to minimize disruption while offering high sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, they are characterized by their practicality, being cost-effective, easy to implement, and easy to interpret. These findings suggest that pharmacy-based measures are potentially suitable to assess medication adherence for routine clinical use.

Abstract
Background Group education has demonstrated benefits among people with diabetes, including reduced A1C and improved self-monitoring practices. Despite this, attendance rates are low for a variety of reasons, including lack of understanding of potential benefits among patients. Objectives The pharmacist-led diabetes self-management education program at a community hospital has low attendance. This project assesses characteristics associated with attendance and compares outcomes among attendees and non-attendees. Methods Retrospective data was collected between July 2022 and December 2023. Variables included: age, sex, class attendance, pre- and ≥ 90-day post-class A1C, pre- and post-class BMI, attending pharmacist-led clinic prior to scheduled class, social determinants of health screening survey responses, and diagnosis of depression or anxiety. Results 103 patients were identified. 53 % attended at least one class out of a series of four. Attendance at the pharmacist-led diabetes clinic (70 % among attendees versus 30 % among non-attendees, p < 0.001) was associated with attendance. Age, gender, concurrent mental health diagnoses (depression and anxiety), and SDOH related needs were not associated with attendance. Baseline A1C was similar for attendees and non-attendees (9.6 vs. 9.7 %, respectively). Post-class A1C was 7.4 % for attendees of at least one class and 8 % for non-attendees. Patients who attended all four classes achieved a mean A1C <7 %. Discussion There are many factors that lead to lack of engagement with group education for diabetes. Referral to group education by a pharmacist who has established rapport with the patient and can speak to specific details about benefits of the classes may improve attendance at diabetes group education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although previous systematic reviews have studied medication adherence interventions among people with Type 2 diabetes (PwT2D), no intervention has been found to improve medication adherence consistently. Furthermore, inconsistent and poor reporting of intervention description has made understanding, replication, and evaluation of intervention challenging. PURPOSE We aimed to identify the behavior change techniques (BCTs) and characteristics of successful medication adherence interventions among PwT2D. METHODS A systematic search was conducted on Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus. Studies were included if they were randomized controlled trials with BCT-codable interventions designed to influence adherence to anti-diabetic medication for PwT2D aged 18 years old and above and have medication adherence measure as an outcome. RESULTS Fifty-five studies were included. Successful interventions tend to target medication adherence only, involve pharmacists as the interventionist, contain "Credible source" (BCT 9.1), "Instruction on how to perform the behaviour" (BCT 4.1), "Social support (practical)" (BCT 3.2), "Action planning" (BCT 1.4), and/ or "Information about health consequences" (BCT 5.1). Very few interventions described its context, used theory, examined adherence outcomes during the follow-up period after an intervention has ended, or were tailored to address specific barriers of medication adherence. CONCLUSION We identified specific BCTs and characteristics that are commonly reported in successful medication adherence interventions, which can facilitate the development of future interventions. Our review highlighted the need to consider and clearly describe different dimensions of context, theory, fidelity, and tailoring in an intervention.

Abstract
CONTEXT The ability of self-manage was important for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and it was supported and depend on the method used. We aimed to summarize the potential method of self-management to improve self-empowerment. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION To obtain the related data, 5 databases, including Scopus, Science Direct, ProQuest, CINAHL, and SAGE, were comprehensively searched. The search was done in advance using the Boolean operator. The full texts of articles presenting data on self-management methods were screened and retrieved. RESULTS A total of 22 studies were included in this review. Various self-management techniques were covered with primary and secondary outcomes. Primary outcomes included blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (FBG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Secondary outcomes included knowledge, self-efficacy, lifestyle habits, physical activity, diet, smoking, medical treatment, support, and health behavior. A goal-setting-oriented approach was effective in setting targets and gaining support from family members. A family-centered approach was effective in taking care of and taking good care of patients with T2DM. Strength training exercises provide patients with a choice of physical activity that can help them manage their blood sugar and blood pressure. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a stress-reduction technique. The patient's acceptance of the disease and treatment for diabetes is aided by education. CONCLUSIONS A successful self-management method was one which balances and adapts to the patient's condition. Regardless of the age of the patients, the overall findings from the review suggest that self-management methods can help patients become healthier and improve their quality of life by controlling their hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level.

Abstract
To investigate the efficacy of self-management group education versus the standard care for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). An electronic search was performed in nine databases including PubMed for selecting eligible studies. Meta-analysis was used for pooling of the results. Of 3446 records screened, we included ten studies for this systematic review and meta-analysis. Regarding assessment of effectiveness, there was a significant superiority reported in the intervention group when compared to the usual/standard care (standardized mean difference [95% confidence interval] = 0.24 [0.15; 0.32]). The intervention group had a significant reduction in the levels of hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), fasting blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, and body mass index compared to the usual/standard care (p < 0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was observed in the levels of high-density lipoprotein, systolic blood pressure (SBP), or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between the two groups (p > 0.05). Self-management group education interventions are recommended in patients with type 2 DM for their effectiveness in different clinical aspects.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major cause of morbidity worldwide. The prevalence of DM has doubled over the last 35 years and is escalating. Various complications and manifestations of diabetes have caused numerous deaths worldwide, with numbers increasing every year. There have been many advances and breakthroughs over the past decade in the management of DM. The major focus of many research studies has been to evaluate effective medication combinations, preventative measures, and the way to control such morbid conditions. Our focus in this review is to discuss specific secondary prevention techniques with the diabetes log sheet and educational literature on its effectiveness in controlling diabetes. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) has been accepted as a diabetes control measure in many resources worldwide. Here, we have assessed articles on the effectiveness of the diabetes log sheet and educational literature on HbA1c levels. We will begin with a few key points to acknowledge diabetes initially, followed by discussing the effectiveness of the diabetes log sheet and literature on HbA1c.

Abstract
Background Despite the inadequate filling of prescriptions among chronic care patients has been a problem, little is known about the intervention effect on it. Objective The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) was to investigate the effectiveness of various public health interventions on primary and secondary medication adherence among T2DM patients. Methods Searching was done from the major databases; Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, EBSCOhost, and SCOPUS. A hand search was made to find grey works of literature. Articles focused on interventions to enhance primary and secondary medication among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were included. After screening and checking eligibility, the methodological quality was assessed. Secondary medication adherence was synthesized descriptively due to measurement and definition variations across studies. Finally, a meta-analysis was made using the fixed effects model for primary medication adherence. Results 3992 studies were screened for both primary and secondary medication adherences. Among these, 24 studies were included in the analysis for primary (5) and secondary (19) medication adherence. Pooled relative medication redemption difference was RD = 8% (95% CI: 6-11%) among the intervention groups. Age, intervention, provider setting, and IDF region were determinant factors of primary medication adherence. About two-thirds of the studies revealed that interventions were effective in improving secondary medication adherence. Conclusion Both primary and secondary medications were enhanced by a variety of public health interventions for patients worldwide. However, there is a scarcity of studies on primary medication adherence globally, and in resource-limited settings for the type of adherences. Abstract
Medication nonadherence continues to be a serious issue in a range of long-term medical conditions and has been studied extensively over the past few decades. However, despite the plethora of research studies on medication adherence, poor methodological rigour in many studies has contributed to limited generalisability of the positive findings, limited impact on patients' medication adherence, and inability to compare between studies. This paper focuses on current guidelines designed specifically for research on medication adherence. It discusses key elements to consider during study design, selection of adherence measurements, and reporting on medication adherence research, to ensure a higher quality of research in medication adherence. Overall, there appears to be variations in adherence terminology reported in the literature despite improvements in defining medication taking behaviour and the availability of taxonomies. In addition, limited guidance exists on how best to measure adherence. Recommendations are provided on appropriate adherence measures for the adherence behaviour being investigated, including careful consideration of adherence concepts, validity of adherence instruments, appropriate instrument selection, definition of nonadherence threshold, and how to report medication adherence. Improving adherence research requires greater clarity and standardisation of descriptions of nonadherence behaviour, increased methodological rigour in study designs, better selection of adherence measurements, and comprehensive reporting.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to develop a Family Concordance Competency Scale for Family System Units (FCCS-Fa) for families with children having chronic disease, and to evaluate its reliability and validity. METHODS FCCS-Fa was developed by taking the following steps: (a) drafting based on the elements comprising concordance between healthcare professionals and families with patients suffering from chronic illness; (b) evaluation of face and content validity by an expert panel; and (c) re-examination of face and content validity by semi-structured interviews with 16 families. Criterion-related validity was evaluated using the existing scale and construct validity was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis. Analysis of each FCCS-Fa evaluation item, internal consistency, and the 2-week test-retest reliability was also conducted. An anonymous self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted, targeting families with chronically ill children who were outpatients at three hospitals. RESULTS A total of 196 subjects were analyzed. As results of FCCS-Fa item analysis and exploratory factor analysis, a scale structure comprised of 17 evaluation items and three factors were adopted. In addition, a significant correlation with several existing scales was identified and the criterion-related validity was also confirmed. The Cronbach's α coefficient for the overall scale was .927, the intraclass correlation coefficient applying the retest method was .905, and internal consistency and test-retest reliability were both confirmed. CONCLUSIONS We developed FCCS-Fa with reliability and validity. Assessing family concordance competency using this scale and supporting families to achieve family concordance can lead to self-management by families.

Abstract

METHODS This multicentre study will be carried out at 30 primary healthcare centres, where 436 persons with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), aged between 18-75 years, will be recruited. The experimental educational program to be applied is modelled using components obtained from a systematic review and prior qualitative analysis. In addition, a taxonomy of nursing practice is used to standardize the program, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour as a conceptual model. The intervention will be carried out by community nurses, using ADAPP-Ti® , an application developed with FileMaker Pro v.18. The control group will receive usual care and data will be collected at 6, 12, and 18 months, for both groups. The primary outcome considered will be glycosylated haemoglobin and cardiovascular factors, while the secondary ones will be tobacco consumption, body mass index, barriers to self-care, health-related quality of life, and lifestyle modification. The protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Province of Malaga (Spain) in November 2014. DISCUSSION The degree of metabolic control in T2DM is not always associated with healthy lifestyles and significant levels of medication are often prescribed to achieve clinical objectives. An intervention focused on needs, based on the best available evidence and a solid conceptual framework, might successfully consolidate appropriate self-care behaviour in this population. IMPACT The study will result in the publication of an educational program featuring well-defined interventions and activities that will enable clinicians to tailor health care to the individual's needs and to combat treatment inertia in attending this population.

Abstract
Online care platforms can support patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in managing their health. However, in the use of eHealth, a low participation rate is common. The Proactive Interdisciplinary Self-Management (PRISMA) program, aimed at improving patients' self-management skills, was expected to encourage patients to manage their disease through the use of an online platform. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to investigate whether a group education program can improve the use of an online care platform in patients with T2DM treated by primary care providers in the Netherlands. In a randomized controlled trial, patients with T2DM received either PRISMA with usual care or usual care only. During a six-month follow-up period in 2014-2015, usage (number of log-ons and time spent per session) of an online care platform (e-Vita) aimed at improving T2DM self-management was assessed. A training about the functionalities of e-Vita was offered. The sample consisted of 203 patients. No differences were found between the intervention and control groups in the number of patients who attended the platform training (interested patients) (X 2(1) = 0.58; p = 0.45), and the number of patients who logged on at least once (platform users) (X 2(1) = 0.46; p = 0.50). In addition, no differences were found between the groups in the type of users-patients who logged on twice or more (active users) or patients who logged on once (nonactive users) (X 2(1) = 0.56; p = 0.45). The PRISMA program did not change platform usage in patients with T2DM. In addition, only a small proportion of the patients logged on twice or more. Patients probably need other encouragements to manage their condition using an online platform.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes self-management education can be helpful for patients with type 2 diabetes in managing their condition. We aimed to study the effects of the group-based PRoactive Interdisciplinary Self-MAnagement (PRISMA) training program on self-reported and clinical outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes treated in general practice. METHODS Persons aged 18 years or older diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and treated in primary care were included. In a randomized controlled trial design (1:1), patients were followed for 6 months with an extension phase of 6 months. Block randomization was used. The patients with type 2 diabetes received either PRISMA in addition to usual care or usual care only. All patients completed a range of validated questionnaires (including knowledge, skills, and confidence for self-management [PAM], diabetes self-care behavior [SDSCA], health-related quality of life [EQ-5D], and emotional well-being [WHO-5]). In addition, clinical outcomes (HbA1c, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, and cholesterol levels) were collected during the routine diabetes checkups. RESULTS Of the total sample (n = 193), 60.1% were men. The mean age was 69.9 years (SD = 9.1). No significant differences were found on self-reported outcomes between the groups at 0, 6, and 12 months. The clinical outcomes were not reported due to a large number of missing values. CONCLUSION PRISMA did not improve self-reported outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes treated in primary care. It was not possible to make a statement about the clinical effects.
