Evaluating the Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of the Pandemic-Related Pregnancy Stress Scale

The Serbian version of the Pandemic-Related Pregnancy Stress Scale (PREPS-SRB)-A validation study

Pregnancy is a sensitive period in a woman's life when psychological distress can have negative consequences for the mother and fetus. Prolonged and intensified symptoms of anxiety and depression caused by the COVID-19 pandemic increase the risk of maternal and fetal health complications. The Pandemic-Related Pregnancy Stress Scale (PREPS) is a thoroughly designed tool that helps determine and analyze stress among pregnant women during pandemics in three domains: Preparedness in childbirth, (2) Infection, and (3) Positive Appraisal. A cross-sectional study included 189 pregnant women attending a community health center, "Dr Simo Milošević," in Belgrade, Serbia, from January to February 2022. Pregnant women anonymously completed a questionnaire as part of the study. The mean scores for those three domains are as follows: Preparedness (2.4 ± 0.9), Infection stress (2.8 ± 1.1), and Positive Appraisal (3.7 ± 0.9). Internal consistency of the PREPS questionnaire for PREPS-Total (α = 0.867). An explanatory factor analysis of the PREPS showed that the Serbian version of the Pandemic-Related Pregnancy Stress Scale has good psychometric properties. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling Adequacy (KMO) was found to be 0.860, indicating a high degree of sampling adequacy. Additionally, Bartlett's Test of Sphericity yielded a statistically significant result (χ2 = 1564.206, df = 105, p < 0.001). The CFA showed very good fit indices for the Serbian sample, confirming the factor structure of the original English version. The RMSEA value of 0.056 (0.036-0.075) and values for fit indices TLI (0.961) and CFI (0.974) were above the cut-off of ≥0.95, indicating an excellent fit. All standardized factor loadings were statistically significant and ranged from 0.50 to 0.85. The PREPS-SRB questionnaire serves as a valuable tool for Serbian healthcare professionals, allowing them to identify pregnant women experiencing significant stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Validation of the Chinese version of the Smartphone Distraction Scale

The Smartphone Distraction Scale (SDS) is a novel assessment scale for smartphone distraction; it comprises 16 items that cover attention impulsiveness, online vigilance, multitasking, and emotion regulation. This study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the SDS in college students in China. After translating and culturally adapting the original version of the SDS into Chinese, the scale was tested on a sample of 1302 college students.The validity and reliability were assessed utilizing SPSS 25.0, AMOS 25.0 and Mplus 8.3. Parallel analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed for the validity analysis. Criterion-related validity for the SDS was tested by correlation analysis with the mobile phone addiction scale (MPAI). The reliability analysis was tested by Cronbach's alpha coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). EFA and parallel analysis revealed a three-factor structure. The EFA identified factor loadings on three factors (14 items), explaining a total variance of 60.73 %. The CFA model fit was good (χ2/df = 4.644, RMSEA = 0.047, GFI = 0.930, CFI = 0.955, SRMR = 0.047), and the multigroup confirmatory factor analysis indicated measurement invariance for gender. Both convergent and discriminant validity were established. The criterion-related validity was established based on a significant correlation (r = 0.758) with the MPAI. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.916, and the split-half reliability was 0.769, demonstrating a satisfactory internal consistency. The score of ICC was 0.907, demonstrating the stability of the SDS. Based on these data, the Chinese version of the SDS demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability in a sample of college students.

Prevalence and associated factors of prenatal depression in pregnant Korean women during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

This study investigated the effects of prenatal education characteristics, pandemic-related pregnancy stress, and health behaviors during pregnancy on prenatal depression in pregnant women during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

METHODS

The participants were 180 pregnant Korean women, recruited from internet communities for pregnancy preparation, childbirth, and childcare, from July 5 to 15, 2022. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test, analysis of variance, the Mann-Whitney U-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple regression analysis.

RESULTS

The scores for pandemic-related pregnancy stress (24.50±6.37) and health behaviors during pregnancy (67.07±9.20) were high. Nearly half of the participants (n=89, 49.4%) presented with prenatal depression, with scores of 10 or greater. Prenatal depression had a positive correlation with gestational age (r=.18, p=.019) and pandemic-related pregnancy stress (r=.27, p<.001), and a negative correlation with health behaviors during pregnancy (r=-.42, p<.001). The factors associated with prenatal depression were pandemic-related pregnancy stress (t=4.70, p<.001), marital satisfaction (dissatisfied) (t=3.66, p<.001), pregnancy healthcare practice behaviors (t=-3.31, p=.001), family type (weekend couple) (t=2.84, p=.005), and gestational age (t=2.32, p=.022). The explanatory power of these variables was 38.2%.

CONCLUSION

Since participants had a high level of prenatal depression during the pandemic, and infectious diseases such as COVID-19 may recur, strategies should be developed to improve pregnant women's mental health with consideration of the unique variables that are relevant in a pandemic. It is also necessary to develop efficient online prenatal education programs that can be implemented even in special circumstances such as social distancing, and to evaluate their effectiveness.
