Association between the Intake/Type of Cheese and Cognitive Function in Community-Dwelling Older Women in Japan: A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study

While many studies have described the association between cognitive decline and eating habits, little attention has been paid to its association with cheese intake. In this epidemiological study of 1035 community-dwelling women aged ≥ 65, we investigated the association between intake/type of cheese and cognitive function. The anthropometry, functional ability, and the frequency of food intake, including cheese, were assessed. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function, and a score of 20-26 was operationally defined as mild cognitive decline. We found that the MMSE score was significantly different between the presence of cheese intake and not (cheese intake: 28.4 ± 1.9; non-cheese intake: 27.6 ± 2.4) and between those who consumed Camembert cheese and those who did not (Camembert cheese: 28.7 ± 1.4; others: 28.3 ± 2.0). After adjusting for confounders, multiple logistic regression identified four independent variables significantly associated with mild cognitive decline: Camembert cheese intake (odds ratio = 0.448, 95% confidence interval = 0.214-0.936), age, usual walking speed, and repetitive saliva swallowing test scores. Our results, while based on cross-sectional data from Japanese community-dwelling older women, identified the significant inverse association between Camembert cheese intake and mild cognitive decline.

Rationale and design of Juntendo Sarcopenia Registration to explore the predictors and prognosis of sarcopenia and frailty in the elderly in TOKYO (JUSTICE-TOKYO)

AIM

This study aimed to clarify the prevalence, predictors, and prognosis of frailty and sarcopenia in both cross-sectional and longitudinal study of the real world.

METHODS

The JUSTICE-TOKYO study is a single-center, prospective observational study of elderly patients. Patients aged ≥65 years who regularly visited our center were enrolled and followed up for 4 years (n = 1042). The diagnosis of sarcopenia and frailty in the enrolled patients was based on the criteria established by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia and Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria, respectively. The primary end point is the incidence of all-cause mortality and hospitalization for treatment. The secondary end points are clinically significant bleeding, cardiovascular events, strokes, malignancies, incidence of falling, fractures, pneumonia, and the onset of new dementia cases.

RESULTS

A total of 1042 patients were enrolled in this study. The mean age of the cohort at baseline was 78.2 years, with 56% being women. Among the enrolled patients, 223 (21.4%) diagnosed with sarcopenia, 172 (16.5%) exhibited frailty, and 541 (51.9%) fell into the prefrailty category.

CONCLUSIONS

The JUSTICE-TOKYO study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of sarcopenia and frailty among older adult outpatients in a real-world context and contributes to measures aimed at extending healthy life expectancy. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 168-172.

Validation of a dietary balance score in middle-aged and older community-dwelling Japanese

This study assessed the validity of dietary balance scores (DBSs) by investigating the association between DBSs and nutrient adequacy (NA) in two Japanese populations. The participants were 65 community-dwelling Japanese from Tokushima Prefecture and 2,330 community-dwelling Japanese from Aichi Prefecture. Based on food frequency questionnaires or 3-day dietary records, we obtained 18 food groups. The NA score integrates nine beneficial nutrients and two nutrients that should be limited. We calculated four different DBSs: DBS1 consisted of five food groups (score range:0?20), DBS2 consisted of nine food groups (score range:0?36), DBS3 consisted of eight food groups (score range:0?32), and DBS4 consisted of 10 food groups (score range:0?40). Both the Spearman rank correlation coefficient with NA and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) for the nine beneficial nutrients were then estimated to test the performance of each DBS in predicting nutrient intake. The results showed that DBS1 and DBS4 were positively correlated with NA, while the AUC-ROC showed that DBS4 could moderately discriminate individuals with adequate intake levels of all nine nutrients. These findings suggest DBSs (especially DBS4) are useful in assessing dietary balance in middle-aged and older community-dwelling Japanese. J. Med. Invest. 70 : 377-387, August, 2023.
