Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and primary clarifier skimmings for increased biogas production

Exploration of microbial communities contributing to effective methane production from scum under anaerobic digestion

Scum is formed by the adsorption of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) onto biomass surface in anaerobic digestion of oily substrates. Since scum is a recalcitrant substrate to be digested, it is disposed via landfilling or incineration, which results in biomass washout and a decrease in methane yield. The microbes contributing to scum degradation are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cardinal microorganisms in anaerobic scum digestion. We pre-incubated a sludge with scum to enrich scum-degrading microbes. Using this sludge, a 1.3-times higher methane conversion rate (73%) and a faster LCFA degradation compared with control sludge were attained. Then, we analyzed the cardinal scum-degrading microbes in this pre-incubated sludge by changing the initial scum-loading rates. Increased 16S rRNA copy numbers for the syntrophic fatty-acid degrader Syntrophomonas and hydrogenotrophic methanogens were observed in scum high-loaded samples. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing indicated that Syntrophomonas was the most abundant genus in all the samples. The amino-acid degrader Aminobacterium and hydrolytic genera such as Defluviitoga and Sporanaerobacter became more dominant as the scum-loading rate increased. Moreover, phylogenic analysis on Syntrophomonas revealed that Syntrophomonas palmitatica, which is capable of degrading LCFAs, related species became more dominant as the scum-loading rate increased. These results indicate that a variety of microorganisms that degrade LCFAs, proteins, and sugars are involved in effective scum degradation.

Energy balance for biodiesel production processes using microbial oil and scum

Biodiesel production using microbial oil is a promising technology. The main aim of this study is to check practical feasibility (in terms of energy balance) of different biodiesel production processes. Mass and energy balance of biodiesel production have been performed for 3 separate processes: (1) microbial lipid production from T. oleaginosus using waste substrates followed by INRS downstream process (2) microbial lipid production from pure substrate using R. toruloides followed by traditional and INRS downstream process and 3) oil extraction from scum and conversion to biodiesel. It was found that employing waste substrates like crude glycerol and municipal sludge in fermentation reduced the energy input by 50%. While employing biodegradable surfactants and petroleum-diesel as solvent (PD) for lipid extraction and recovery significantly reduced the energy input at cell wall disruption step. Biodiesel production from scum is a two-step process which is fast and energetically favorable.

On the design and operation of primary settling tanks in state of the art wastewater treatment and water resources recovery

In state of the art wastewater treatment, primary settling tanks (PSTs) are considered as an integral part of the biological wastewater and sludge treatment process, as well as of the biogas and electric energy production. Consequently they strongly influence the efficiency of the entire wastewater treatment plant. However, in the last decades the inner physical processes of PSTs, largely determining their efficiency, have been poorly addressed. In common practice PSTs are still solely designed and operated based on the surface overflow rate and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) as a black box. The paper shows the results of a comprehensive investigation programme, including 16 PSTs. Their removal efficiency and inner physical processes (like the settling process of primary sludge), internal flow structures within PSTs and their impact on performance were investigated. The results show that: (1) the removal rates of PSTs are generally often underestimated in current design guidelines, (2) the removal rate of different PSTs shows a strongly fluctuating pattern even in the same range of the HRT, and (3) inlet design of PSTs becomes highly relevant in the removal efficiency at rather high surface overflow rates, above 5 m/h, which is the upper design limit of PSTs for dry weather load.
