An experimental study on the use of a sequencing-batch membrane bioreactor (SBMBR) for the treatment of mixed municipal wastewater

Insight into the performance and fouling characteristics of submerged ceramic membrane bioreactor in wastewater treatment

Submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) is a promising technology in municipal wastewater treatment, but the membrane fouling has restricted its development. In this study, an integrated submerged ceramic membrane bioreactor (C-SMBR) was constructed to treat domestic wastewater, and the characteristics of membrane fouling and the microbial community structure were investigated. The results showed that the average removal efficiencies of COD, TN, NH4+-N reached 94.97%, 61.69% and 71.61% respectively, under different ammonia nitrogen loading rate (NLR). The increase of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the suspension jointly accelerated the membrane fouling process, resulting in an increase in the trans-membrane pressure (TMP), which led to membrane fouling. Microbial community structure analysis showed that the dominant phylum bacteria were Patescibacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidota and Chloroflexi, and the dominant class bacteria were Saccharimonadia, γ-proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidia, Anaerolineae, α-proteobacteria, etc. In summary, the conditions, microbial information and membrane fouling characteristics of wastewater treated by C-SMBR obtained in this study can provide reference and data support for further promotion and improvement of the application of C-SMBR and membrane fouling control.

Enhancing sequencing batch reactors for efficient wastewater treatment across diverse applications: A comprehensive review

This review explores recent progress in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and hybrid systems for wastewater treatment, emphasizing their adaptability and effectiveness in managing diverse wastewater compositions. Through extensive literature analysis from 1985 to 2024, the integration of advanced technologies like photocatalysis within hybrid systems is highlighted, showing promise for improved pollutant removal efficiencies. Insights into operational parameters, reactor design, and microbial communities influencing SBR performance are discussed. Sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs) demonstrate exceptional efficiency in Chemical Oxygen Demand, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal, while innovative anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactors (AOA-SBRs) offer effective nutrient removal strategies. Hybrid systems, particularly photocatalytic sequencing batch reactors (PSBRs), show potential for removing persistent pollutants like antibiotics and phenols, underscoring the significance of advanced oxidation processes. However, research gaps persist, including the need for comparative studies between different SBR types and comprehensive evaluations of long-term performance, environmental variability, and economic viability. Addressing these gaps will be vital for the practical deployment of SBRs and hybrid systems. Further exploration of synergies, economic considerations, and reactor stability will enhance the sustainability and scalability of these technologies for efficient and eco-friendly wastewater treatment.

Fouling mechanisms in anoxic-aerobic sequencing batch membrane bioreactor based on adapted Hermia models and main foulant characteristics

Various derivatives of Hermia models (complete pore blocking, intermediate pore blocking, cake layer formation, and standard pore blocking) and different assessments of foulant characteristics have long been used to determine the membrane fouling mechanisms. Accordingly, this study aims to adapt Hermia models and their combination according to the operating conditions of an anoxic-aerobic sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (A/O-SBMBR). In addition, fouling mechanisms of the A/O-SBMBR were assessed using these models along with the main foulant characteristics. Models fitting with the transmembrane pressure (TMP) data indicated that the intermediate-standard model was accounting for the increased fouling during the whole regular operating period, with the residual sum of squares (RSS) of 58.3. A more detailed study on the distinct stages of TMP curve showed that the intermediate-standard model had the best fit in stages of 2 and 3, with the RSS equal to 2.6 and 2.8, respectively. Also, the complete-standard model provided the best description of the fouling mechanism in stage 4, with the RSS of 12.5. Different analyzes revealed how the main foulant characteristics affect the occurrence of intermediate, complete and standard fouling mechanisms in the A/O-SBMBR, which is consistent with the fitting results of the adapted Hermia models. The modeling and experimental methods used in the presented study provided a valuable basis to prevent and control membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors.
