Abstract
Introduction A healthy vaginal microbiota is represented mainly by Lactobacillus spp. and plays a vital role in maintaining the functional balance in the vaginal environment. Scientists have drawn attention to possible correlations between the vaginal microbiome and gynecological neoplasms. Several recent studies have shown a potential link between the vaginal microbiome and the risk of developing cervical cancer from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study aimed to compare the prevalence and abundance of various lactic acid bacteria species (LABs) in vaginal swabs from healthy controls and patients with abnormal Pap smear results. Methods The study included 100 women (79 patients with abnormal cervical Pap smear results and 21 controls) from whom vaginal swabs were collected. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to determine seven lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species and their quantities. Results Most patients were colonized by two Lactobacillus species, primarily Lactobacillus gasseri (93%) and L. crispatus (83%). Patient age and place of residence were associated with the diversity of LAB in the vaginal microbiota. The abundance of L. delbrueckii in the vaginal microbiota increased, whereas the abundance of L. gasseri abundance decreased, with patient age. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Limosilactobacillus fermentum were significantly more often detected in patients living in rural versus urban areas. Statistical analysis did not show any significant differences in LAB between groups of patients with various changes on smear tests. Discussion The degree of dysplastic changes in the endothelium or the presence of a group of atypical cervical stratified epithelial cells was not associated with significant changes in the studied vaginal bacteria.

Abstract
Lactobacillus johnsonii is a probiotic bacterial species with broad antimicrobial properties; however, its antimicrobial activities against the pathobiont Candida albicans are underexplored. The aim of this study was to study the interactions of L. johnsonii with C. albicans and explore mechanisms of bacterial anti-fungal activities based on bacterial genomic characterization coupled with experimental data. We isolated an L. johnsonii strain (MT4) from the oral cavity of mice and characterized its effect on C. albicans growth in the planktonic and biofilm states. We also identified key genetic and phenotypic traits that may be associated with a growth inhibitory activity exhibited against C. albicans. We found that L. johnsonii MT4 displays pH-dependent and pH-independent antagonistic interactions against C. albicans, resulting in inhibition of C. albicans planktonic growth and biofilm formation. This antagonism is influenced by nutrient availability and the production of soluble metabolites with anticandidal activity.

Abstract
This study chose Oak woodchips and gravel as media filter to enhance the denitrification in the bioretention system (saturated zone 7.7 L) treating synthetic stormwater runoff. It revealed that the denitrification process mainly occurred during the drying phase and enlarging volume of saturated zones to retain more stormwater during storm event was the direct method to promote nitrogen removal of the bioretention system. Nevertheless, it was noted that the nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon would be released into the effluent during the wetting period. The denitrification rate with different nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations did not show the obvious change with zero order kinetics constant of 2.91 mg/L∙d on average. Furthermore, it confirmed that woodchips were degraded and converted to volatile fatty acids (VFAs), especially acetic acid as carbon source, further utilized by the denitrifying bacteria, such as Dechloromonas, Acidoborax, Pseudomonas, Denitratisoma and Acinetobacter. In addition, genera of Lachnospiraceae and Lactobacillus, which had the ability to degrade the macromolecular organic components into low molecular VFAs, were observed in the woodchips bioretention system.

Abstract
The healthy vaginal microbiota is dominated by Lactobacillus spp., which provide an important critical line of defense against pathogens, as well as giving beneficial effects to the host. We characterized L. gasseri 1A‐TV, L. fermentum 18A‐TV, and L. crispatus 35A‐TV, from the vaginal microbiota of healthy premenopausal women, for their potential probiotic activities. The antimicrobial effects of the 3 strains and their combination against clinical urogenital bacteria were evaluated together with the activities of their metabolites produced by cell‐free supernatants (CFSs). Their beneficial properties in terms of ability to interfere with vaginal pathogens (co‐aggregation, adhesion to HeLa cells, biofilm formation) and antimicrobial activity mediated by CFSs were assessed against multidrug urogenital pathogens (S. agalactiae, E. coli, KPC‐producing K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, E. faecium VRE, E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, P. mirabilis, P. vulgaris, C. albicans, C. glabrata). The Lactobacilli tested exhibited an extraordinary ability to interfere and co‐aggregate with urogenital pathogens, except for Candida spp., as well as to adhere to HeLa cells and to produce biofilm in the Lactobacillus combination. Lactobacillus CFSs and their combination revealed a strong bactericidal effect on the multidrug resistant indicator strains tested, except for E. faecium and E. faecalis. The antimicrobial activity was maintained after heat treatment but decreased after enzymatic treatment. All Lactobacilli showed lactic dehydrogenase activity and production of D‐ and L‐lactic acid isomers on Lactobacillus CFSs, while only 1A‐TV and 35A‐TV released hydrogen peroxide and carried helveticin J and acidocin A bacteriocins. These results suggest that they can be employed as a new vaginal probiotic formulation and bio‐therapeutic preparation against urogenital infections. Further, in vivo studies are needed to evaluate human health benefits in clinical situations.

The Vaginal Microbiota and Behavioral Factors Associated With Genital Candida albicans Detection in Reproductive-Age Women. Sex Transm Dis 2020; 46:753-758. Abstract
BACKGROUND Vulvovaginal candidiasis is commonly diagnosed and has been associated in prospective studies with the acquisition of HIV. Little data is available on how the composition of the vaginal microbiota, and other risk factors, are associated with the molecular detection of Candida albicans-a common cause of vulvovaginal candidiasis. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, self-collected vaginal swabs were obtained from 394 nonpregnant, reproductive-age women. C. albicans was detected using polymerase chain reaction targeting C. albicans ITS1/2 region. Vaginal microbiota was characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of the V3 to V4 hypervariable regions and clustered into community state types (CSTs). Multiple logistic regression identified factors associated with C. albicans detection. RESULTS Twenty-one percent had C. albicans detected and 46% reported vaginal symptoms in the prior 60 days. There was a 2-fold increase in the odds of C. albicans if a woman was in a L. crispatus-dominated CST compared to CSTs with low-Lactobacillus levels (adjusted odds ratio, 2.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.97-4.37). History of self-treatment with antifungals, L. crispatus relative abundance, and receptive oral sex were also significantly associated with C. albicans detection. CONCLUSIONS A L. crispatus-dominated vaginal microbiota is thought to protect women from both development of bacterial vaginosis and incidence of sexually transmitted infections; however, our data suggest that L. crispatus is associated with increased C. albicans detection. Receptive oral sex may also be a risk factor for vaginal C. albicans colonization.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are a part of the human microbiome in healthy humans. Studies of their physiological and genetic characteristics are the basis for their use in probiotic preparations. This report is a brief description of the helveticin gene found in two Lactobacillus crispatus strains, which are a part of the human microbiome. Our analysis showed that the two variants of the gene are not solely characteristic of strains isolated from humans. In the phylogenetic analysis, we found that the studied sequence (this gene) showed a significant difference between the species of the genus Lactobacillus and could be used as a phylogenetic marker.
