Abstract
Apigenin and baicalein are structurally related flavonoids that have been reported to have multiple pharmacological activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects and potential mechanisms of apigenin and baicalein in D-galactose-induced aging rats. First, apigenin and baicalein showed remarkable antioxidant activity and anti-glycation activity in vitro. Secondly, the protective effects of apigenin and baicalein on aging rats were investigated. We found that apigenin and baicalein supplementation significantly ameliorated aging-related changes such as declines in the spatial learning and memory and histopathological damage of the hippocampus and thoracic aorta. In addition, our data showed that apigenin and baicalein alleviated oxidative stress as illustrated by decreasing MDA level, increasing SOD activity and GSH level. Further data showed that they significantly reduced the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), inhibited the expression of RAGE, down-regulated phosphorylated nuclear factor (p-NF-κB (p65)). Our results suggested that the protective effects of apigenin and baicalein on aging rats were at least partially related to the inhibition of AGEs/RAGE/NF-κB pathway and the improvement of oxidative damage. Overall, apigenin and baicalein showed almost equal anti-aging efficacy. Our results provided an experimental basis for the application of apigenin and baicalein to delay the aging process.

Abstract
Anthocyanins have become increasingly important to the food industry due to their colorant features and many health-promoting activities. Numerous studies have linked anthocyanins to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic properties, as well as protection against heart disease, certain types of cancer, and a reduced risk of diabetes and cognitive disorders. Anthocyanins from various foods may exhibit distinct biological and health-promoting activities owing to their structural diversity. In this review, we have collected and tabulated the key information from various recent published studies focusing on investigating the chemical structure effect of anthocyanins on their stability, antioxidant activities, in vivo fate, and changes in the gut microbiome. This information should be valuable in comprehending the connection between the molecular structure and biological function of anthocyanins, with the potential to enhance their application as both colorants and functional compounds in the food industry.

Abstract
Background: Altering the dietary patterns can potentially decrease the likelihood of metabolic syndrome and circadian syndrome (CircS), but it remains unclear which types of flavonoid compounds are responsible for these effects, particularly among nationally representative populations. Thus, we conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the impact of flavonoid intake on CircS. Methods: The study included 9212 noninstitutionalized adults from two survey cycles (2007-2008 and 2009-2010) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Data on six dietary flavonoids were collected through a 24-hr dietary recall, including isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, and flavonols. All statistical analyses were weighted to account for the complex survey sampling design to generate nationally representative estimates. Multivariable logistic regression and propensity score matching (PSM) were performed to control for potential confounders and assess the association between the six flavonoids and risk of short sleep. Results: After adjusting for all covariates, only individuals with high intake of total flavanones exhibited a 28% [odds ratio (OR) = 0.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.64-0.83, P < 0.001] decrease in the risk of CircS. The results obtained through PSM were consistent with this finding (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.61-0.80, P < 0.001). Total flavanone intake displayed a linear dose-response relationship with the likelihood of CircS (P for interaction = 0.448). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that high dietary intakes of flavanones have beneficial effects on reducing the risk of CircS.

Abstract
Decreased adult neurogenesis, or the gradual depletion of neural stem cells in adult neurogenic niches, is considered a hallmark of brain aging. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the intricate relationship between aging, adult neurogenesis, and the potential neuroregenerative properties of astaxanthin, a carotenoid principally extracted from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. The unique chemical structure of astaxanthin enables it to cross the blood-brain barrier and easily reach the brain, where it may positively influence adult neurogenesis. Astaxanthin can affect molecular pathways involved in the homeostasis, through the activation of FOXO3-related genetic pathways, growth, and regeneration of adult brain neurons, enhancing cell proliferation and the potency of stem cells in neural progenitor cells. Furthermore, astaxanthin appears to modulate neuroinflammation by suppressing the NF-κB pathway, reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and limiting neuroinflammation associated with aging and chronic microglial activation. By modulating these pathways, along with its potent antioxidant properties, astaxanthin may contribute to the restoration of a healthy neurogenic microenvironment, thereby preserving the activity of neurogenic niches during both normal and pathological aging.

Abstract
Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental syndrome, accumulating evidence indicates that oxidative stress and inflammation are common features of ASD. Flavonoids, one of the largest and best-investigated classes of plant-derived compounds, are known to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. This review used a systematic search process to assess the available evidence on the effect of flavonoids on ASD. A comprehensive literature search was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases following the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 17 preclinical studies and 4 clinical investigations met our inclusion criteria and were included in the final review. Most findings from animal studies suggest that treatment with flavonoids improves oxidative stress parameters, reduces inflammatory mediators, and promotes pro-neurogenic effects. These studies also showed that flavonoids ameliorate the core symptoms of ASD, such as social deficits, repetitive behavior, learning and memory impairments, and motor coordination. However, there are no randomized placebo-controlled trials that support the clinical efficacy of flavonoids in ASD. We only found open-label studies and case reports/series, using only two flavonoids such as luteolin and quercetin. These preliminary clinical studies indicate that flavonoid administration may improve specific behavioral symptoms of ASD. Overall, this review is the first one to systematically report evidence for the putative beneficial effects of flavonoids on features of ASD. These promising preliminary results may provide the rationale for future randomized controlled trials aimed at confirming these outcomes.
